you have to realize that the people who come to “mac beta client tech support” have a few things going on: 1) they play gw2 on a mac, 2) they have or have had problems with it. I am someone who has had problems (sorta still do…) but is currently in “perfect” working order.
I quoted ‘perfect’ because it works as-is right now, but if I increase the graphics it crashes if I move more than 3 feet (I believe it’s some combination of animation or environment options).
My computer used to handle best appearance perfectly, but I can’t use it at that due to this bug. 2010 Mac Pro

Hey there! I realise this is the support forums, but it is also where I will find the mac users for a discussion, not windows trolls. (And it is about the mac client and what is wrong with it. Kind of.) And the people having problems can also submit their two cents! (FPS, Setup, etc.) As I said above, I run the new 13" RMBP. I get approx 30 fps average on low. Is this about the right performance? (You might not know this, but worth asking haha.) I would of thought it would be higher, even by 10 fps. Guess not. I saw a forum post on that bug too! Sounds terrible! But I never get to see it on best appearance anyway haha. I will keep updated on any bugs I encounter! Anyone else?
There’s no support for the client or any intention to move it form the beta status. That’s basically it. The most recent client update caused a problem that kept a lot of users from buying gems and the answer we got, until a user found a workaround, was “install windows”.

Hello
It is a true shame that they palmed off a great opportunity like this, and hopefully they come back to it sometime. I wish during the meantime they would at least share the project with some experienced coders/programmers to port it while the actual team can focus on content. The issue for me is, I just came from windows. I don’t want to have to purchase it again let a lone use it. Windows 8 and arguebly 7 in some cases are such poorly made operating systems and I think Microsofts innovation and ingenuity was left behind after XP. Anyways, here is to 2014 and it being the year when A-Net released the Mac Client!

It is mostly turn around time for bugs being addressed and the support system not understanding they even have a mac client at times. The cider port is very usable when there isn’t a game breaking bug that sits unfixed for weeks.

Hello!
Yeah, I heard somewhere cider takes a percentage of performance off. But other than that it is completely usable. Why do you think that A-Net doesn’t care about the Mac Client? (They might care about it but they don’t seem to do a whole lot) Focusing on content? Too little of a base to justify it? I personally have no idea.

I never said ANet doesn’t care about the Mac client. They just don’t see to have the support apparatus setup to address the needs of mac players in a timely fashion. That could be due to a number of reasons (and since we have no information from ANet we can’t really conjecture). Honestly, the lack of information from ANet is the main issue here.

It’s not cost efficient. That’s the main reason to use a cider port, significantly smaller cost ( initially and long term) than developing a real OSX client. I guess Arenanet did the math and figured the additional work just isn’t going to pay off.

Yeah, probably the only way we’ll get a real port is if they want to port it to SteamOS/SteamBox for whatever reason. It still doesn’t explain the protracted “beta” we’re in. I think that is the main issue. We’re treading water and they’re using the name beta as cover and we don’t know why. If this is because they don’t want to just screw us and say “whoops, we kind of don’t want to do the whole mac thing after all but we don’t want to screw you mac users over who jumped on the beta client so we’re just going to let you keep the beta client and try to not attract new mac users” they need to say so. As I’ve called for, call it a hobby client. If they really do intend to support us then remove the beta label and release this already. But complaining about this won’t change anything because they’ve proven they don’t listen to us anyway. We’ll have to be our own little community without them and hope for the best.
I completely agree with you Nageth. I just get frustrated sometimes at how bad the port is. I get about a 2fps difference between mac settings and lowest. It would of been better for them to have decided we won’t support mac then to make a half-hearted effort on a port which was a lousy job in the first place. It makes them look bad. But I agree, they only seem to help occasionally and they don’t comment on any of the criticism. Lets just hope they get their act together
