How long will this pc build last
You should get a few years out of that.
You still can upgrade graphics later. I think your PC is set to rock and roll for at least 5 more years, and be relevant. Just might want to eventually go with better graphic card options when they come out. Although I did read about how super computers are going the direction of NV-Link for Nvidia cards, where the link goes between cards, and the CPU. No more PCI-Express lane reliance for communication between CPU and GPU, but rather the NV-Link, which has a much much higher data transfer speeds and bandwidth. I wouldn’t be surprised if this tech rolled out in a few more years to consumers.

you should be fine with your cpu but why 970 sli? 970 is like one of the worse cards to sli due to that 3.5 GB limitation
@OP- That PSU is overkill, even if you intend on overclocking. You’ll get a solid 3-4yrs out of that rig before Moore’s Law forces you to upgrade even if you don’t actually need to (cause of compatibility). Why not go for a gen 6?
Planning on upgrading to a GTX980ti by late 2016
I got the chip and motherboard for $180.00 seemed to good to pass up but I was hoping since even the 2500k is still viable these days that the 4790k would be viable for awhile even though there’s no upgrade path later on .

Nice. Grats on the steal. Haha!

It was a steel no doubt
Upgrade path there’s broadwell with i5 5675c and i7 5775c, which both bring quite good gaming performance over haswell and even skylake with that L4 cache, specially in cpu based games.
But the i7 4790k is such a solid cpu that it will last quite amount of years.
i7 5775c @ 4.1GHz – 12GB RAM @ 2400MHz – RX 480 @ 1390/2140MHz
That’s right there is the 5 series as well I can upgrade if need be so I guess I should be able to squeeze quite a bit out of the motherboard and cpu for some time to come.
Honestly that PC will last you a very long time.
Whilst it’s true that the CPU you’ve got now is the latest CPU that motherboard will take (to the best of my knowledge anyway), it’s still one of the fastest CPUs on the market and with overclocking I’m told it’ll even overtake Intel’s latest offerings due to a better TIM.
Simply put, yes that system will last you a very long time.
