Q:

One of the most common issues reported here are issues with Internet connection.

1) Understanding your connection to Anet servers:

Anet’s servers are located in Dallas for NA servers. Unless you live in Dallas, a test such as speedtest will not work. Connections to other games and websites while having issues with GW2 does not mean Anet has server issues. Your internet connection takes a “drive” to get to Anet’s servers in Dallas. This drive goes along hops which can be compared to as “highways”. Sometimes these hops are having issues. Think of it as road construction or an accident on a road. If you live in Pennsylvania and there is an issue with a hop in Virginia (on its way to Dallas), that your internet provider uses, then you will have issues getting a good connection to Dallas where Anet has it’s servers. However you may not have an issue getting to servers in California since your internet is not going through Virgina (Hypothetically) to get to California. This is very similliar to taking a road trip where a major highway you must take is under construction. When one highway is under construction this only affects traffic going down that highway. This is why your connection may work at a local speed test server or other online games where their servers are located in different locations.

2) Where your problems are coming from:

To determine where your issues are coming from you can download ping plotter (https://www.pingplotter.com) It is a free program and can also be used on your iPhone or Android phone as an app. To determine general lag issues with GW2 simply download the program and type: “ncsoft.com” in the search. Run the test. If you want to be more specific, in game type /ip then take that number and plug it into ping plotter.

3) Reading your test (pics to follow)

You will primarily want to focus on Latencey and Packet Loss. Packet loss is shown on the left hand side (PL) and will have a red percentage. Packet loss can occur at any hop. Where the majority of your Latencey or packet loss starts, is where your issues lies. However if the packet loss starts at the bottom where Anet has its server names, then the issue is on Anets end and you should report this in a ticket with your results. If this occurs anywhere else along the route then this is not Anets problem and there is nothing they can do to help you.

4) How to fix issues

If you have issues anywhere except Anet’s servers or in the first couple hops, unfortunately there is not too much you can do. You can contact your ISP. If the issue occurs right at the first couple hops it may be your ISP and in that case they need to fix it. You can call them and report the issue. If the issue is somewhere else on the route, like halfway through, (for example Level3 or Telia.net are common issue hops) then you can call your ISP to try and pressure them into contacting the hop owner to fix the problem. However it is unlikely your ISP will do anything (except perhaps give you the “run around” saying its Anet when your data shows otherwise). They do not have direct control over the hop. They technically could use a different route around that hop although it’s unlikely you’ll be able to convince them to do this. Alternatively you could look into changing your ISP and hoping the new one does not use the same route. You could also look into a VPN however I do not have experience in this area to give any advice.

Interesting. I play from Australia on EU wvw servers and use WTFast as a VPN. I’m keen to see if I can use this program to check that connection.. but how would I go about it?

Any instruction appreciated. Thanks

I’m not sure how ping plotter works with a VPN. I tried googling it but it seems like you can still use it tho the results may vary and not be accurate. Honestly I don’t know tho.

I’ve been having the standard ‘130 – 180’ higher than usual Aussie ping issue for the last couple of weeks, here’s my ping plotter attached.

Looks like ‘Far end provider bandwidth congestion’ or rather a ‘nothing you can do’ situation..

Yeah I know. I realized what I did after I already wrote it. The concept is still the same tho. I’d I get a chance I may end up fixing it.

No. All servers are in Austin. The thing is anet uses a server in Frankfurt that works as a bridge between Eu connections and Austin servers.

Actually it’s Miami edge hop 6. That is the source of your packet loss going down into Anet servers. So you can contact your ISP to pressure that hop owner into fixing it. But not much else you can do besides look into a VPN like WTFast. I don’t know much about those tho.

Yep the Dallas one is the worst. You can try to contact your ISP to call level 3 in Dallas but I doubt they will do that. You could also try a VPN but I don’t know much about them you’ll have to google it.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help

Hey, was wondering if you could give some input on my situation.

I have two laptops, one very new compared to the other, but the latter has no issues with packet loss/ latency spikes, while my new laptop ( while on same network) has a tendency to have ping spikes and packet loss occasionally. I’ve checked the drivers, lowered some settings, and can’t figure out the cause of it.

While it might be Level 3 issues, I just can’t figure out why my other laptop has no issues while on same connection. Any idea?

EDIT: Even using a VPN on this laptop doesn’t seem to prevent random lag spikes. Which definitely makes me think it’s something on this laptop.

Yeah it is a hardware issue for sure. Sorry I’m not much help in that area. You could try making a thread posting your specs.

What all should I post and where? (Example template would be nice, or just general suggestion)

I would start a thread in the support forum. Post your issues where you have lag spikes but it is not internet related as that is ruled out with your other computer working fine. Post your processor, Windows version, and graphics card. Hopefully someone can help you out and they may end up requesting more info, but that’s a place to start.

There is one thing I would like to add..
All because ping plotter shows packet loss on a backbone provider- doesn’t actually mean there is packet loss. Many routers are configured to drop ICMP (ping packets) on routes which means it looks like packet loss but in fact all traffic is getting to its destination fine.

The only true way of knowing if packets are not making it to ANET are using external network tools like wireshark and seeing if data is being re-requested and retransmitted. If it’s not – it can be ANET side is having issues such as a particular destination server. (We all remember the famous server IP that had issues regardless of which map it was running – mostly SW and the rest of the systems were fine).

only a true network capture tool can correctly diagnose packet loss – ping plotter is not adequate in most cases.
