I’ve been doing some research on Windows 10 and I’m not very happy about the subscription fee just to have an updated OS – not to mention the “forced” updates.

With that In mind I’d assume there will could be an increasing migration towards the Linux community since that is “free” (and we all like free). I began toying with Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon as my first Linux OS because of my dislike towards a subscription fee (I’m honestly broke and trying to pay my way through college – so yeah…). I found that it is remarkably similar to a Windows OS so it’s rather simple to convert over to. It’s true that Linux requires a slightly more elevated know-how when it comes to computers, but there are so many things out there for help and guidelines that emphasise that you can copy/paste their instructions into the Terminal (command prompt) that I’d not think it hard for many standard Window users to make the transition.

That said – from a techy perspective I can see some inherent flaws in trying to use the application “Wine” to make it so you can use specific Windows programs such as Gw2.

Has Anet considered – or will they consider – making Gw2 Linux supported?

Where the hell did you read W10 will have a subscription fee? That’s one of the most false rumors out there in years…

And no, Gw2 will probably never be supported in Linux. Even Mac support is crap and beta client has been beta for years.

There is no subscription fee for Windows 10.

I have a dual-boot setup using Windows 7 and Linux Mint. I haven’t tried running Guild Wars 2 yet on Linux, but I suspect it will work without too much trouble. I don’t see A-net providing any support for Linux in the future.

Keep in mind that Wine is actually like a virtual machine, so games may require a bit more power to get decent performance.

Windows 10 is the last boxed version of windows, Windows11 (Actually just Windows moving forward) is going to be the one with the yearly subscription.

Going to Linux is a wise choice IMHO. Windows has lost is flare and with the announcement of the Subscription based windows on the next major release, Everyone should consider it just to show MS we are tired of their BS.

I suggest Linux Mint and Ubuntu LTS for beginners. Cedega/Wine are what is needed to run DX and .Net apps under Linux/Unix, and often require serious tweaking to get it working well, let along at all sometimes.

But its a learning experience that will serve you well moving forward.

As Ubuntu-user i can say that Gw2 runs with Wine/PlayOnLinux. The huge problem is that you can only use single-core….sadly your other core are ignored from system. So you must set your graphics on ,,low" for fair FPS of ~40 outside from city. Inside is <30 fps.
If many player are around on you and use skills (ex. world boss), then your fps dropp dramatically!

The more power has one single-core, the better performance in gw2!
