Hello, I have 2 different laptops. One costed me around $250 bucks and runs the game flawlessly at about 55-70 FPS on medium settings. The other costed me around $800 and runs the game at about 7-16 FPS on extremelly low settings.

I thought if I posted the spec’s that people with more knowledge could help me figure out whats going on here.

Here are the Spec’s on the Toshiba Satellite p755 that costed me about $800 brand new at best buy in 2011. This machine runs the game at an average of 8-10 fps. 7 or lower when events happen. and up to about 16 when facing the walls.

Here is the spec’s for my $250 Lenovo Ideapad Y550 that I picked up at the pawn shop. This computer runs the game like a beast at 55-70 FPS almost constantly.

I’m not sure why the second laptop is so much better then the first. I would really like to get that first one up to par.

(I would play my Lenovo Ideapad with the Nvidia graphics card, but it keeps shutting down on me. If anyone see’s anything that might lead to that in my system information. Let me know. Thanks!)

Looking at the specs they should perform roughly the same

  • are you measuring FPS in the same places?
  • one has integrated GPU, while the other has a dedicated GPU.
  • are you driver etc installed/updated etc

It’s a noticeable difference. Regardless where you go. The dedicated is running extremely smoothly like wow usually does on a pretty good machine. And then on the integrated it is really choppy and not as fluid. Kind of like skyrocket. Wish I coul make a video. It’s really wild.

Updating drivers these days is quite a daunting task. Intel sends me to my manufacturer. Manufacturer has a driver from 09…etc

Is there an easy way to check your drivers for updates.
I used to think you can do it through device manager but it appears they will tell you the driver is updated when there’s still updated drivers available.

I just really want to play. On the one computer it runs way to slow and choppy and I can’t enjoy my experience. And on the other computer, it runs so perfectly smooth but it shuts off in less than 15 mins.

It’s like a curse! =\

Not to much of a surprise that you could get a better used computer for less than a new one.

From what I recall the Nvidia 240m series out performing the HD 3000 is no surprise ether.

On the one that shuts off in 15min, is it a ‘controlled’ shut down? IE: when you turn the computer back on does Windows wish to repair itself?

This might help debug if it is a automatic thing or the result of something crashing.

It says it shut down unexpectedly and try’s to repair itself when I start the computer back up. It shuts down pretty quick.

Here’s a link to the thread for the shutting down:

Software Student here (I know a bit about hardware as well).

Intel HD 3000 is a very low-end graphics card. If you look at buyable laptops today, that card is about the worst performing card they can put in a machine. The GT240 IS better. Your CPU’s are equally fast, but without looking at the two, I’d say the i3 is slightly better, since it is newer (and probably better designed).

These should be the main concerns.
Now the things i can think of: Some computers do a thing called core parking, which doesn’t always work as intended. Disabling it can net you a FPS increase – I got 15fps. You can google your way to a guide on how to do it. Make sure you read what doing this implies.
I didn’t see the resolution on your second laptop, but lowering the resolution can help your fps too. I’m greedy and run 1920×1080 on my laptop, and it can barely keep up
And of course update your graphics drivers. It can improve a lot.

Intel HD 3000 is just a graphic chip on the motherboard… so it uses memory of your ram, and is far less powerfull than that nvidia on the other one.
So basicly, you have 2Gb for windows, and the rest for the graphic card.

So the OS/Game is indeed ‘crashing’ but without a BSOD? You may be able to get some data out of the Windows event log, sometimes it might capture something useful.
