Is this cpu any good and will it bottleneck.
Yes it will bottleneck for those GPU. (See Part 2.2)
The only exclusive skyhammer stream
so to run newer gpu i have to get new motherboard and cpu to be socket 1155 because 1156 is basically usless?
(edited by Slij.9064)
btw i cant seem to find it at cpu chart
socket 1156 is for the “older” Ivy Bridge Intel CPUs, while the 1155 is for the newest Sandy Bridge
and trust me, the sandy parts are seriously great!
but now, intel has a new socket out called 2011, but that line of Sandy-E bridge is VERY expensive! the cheapest i7 (while very, very fast) is starting @ $300! If you have the money, then by all means go for it lol but a current gen Sandy Bridge (1155) should do the trick just fine
Ivy Bridge is newer and faster than Sandy Bridge. The I5-655K SKT1156 was “Clarkdale”

when a 3960x will bottle neck in this game with a 5770/6770…you need not even ask if a 655k will…..
and as the above fellow said, ivy are the newest, but, they arent that much faster then the sandybridge models, really, it dosnt matter if you buy a top end cpu and gpu, this game is gonna bottleneck…….till anet fix it that is…….
btw the 7870 is a better buy then the 660, specially with the 12.11b11 or 13.1/13.2 drivers, only reason i went 7870.
but yeah, really dosnt matter how good your cpu or gpu is, this game bottlenecks like a kitten on just about anything at least part of the time….(read this section back pages and pages, you will find tons of people with excellent systems that get kitten poor fps…..yet others with pretty MEH systems getting decent fps…..its crazy)

OP
Yes it will bottleneck. LGA 115 board + 3570k or 2550k will be a good choice specialy if u OC. All CPU’s out currently wil lbottleneck, but how low ur FPS drops wil ldepend on just how much of a bottleneck occurs. The current best GW2 performing CPU’s are the 3570k and 3770k with OC’s.
A good GPU would be ether the 7950 or the 7870Tahiti LE version (not the old 7870) The 660ti has comparable performance but usualy costs more.

SOlarNova, actually the
Intel Core i7-3930K
Intel Core i7-3960X
Intel Core i7-3970X
are all better then the 3570k or 3770k, the fact they cost alot more dosnt really matter, after all, they may net you an extra 5-15fps!!!!!
and yeah my old 7870’s are horrible, one of them can only run planetside2 at a stable 60fps (locked via frame limiter in radeonpro) the 2 combined…..well i dont have to use both….so yeah they are crap….oh wait……thats right……they dont suck….and i paid all of 209usd each…..vs 300+ each for 7950’s or 260 each for the 1536 shader 7870’s……..

660ti nets you aprox 8% perf over a single standard 7870(mine are the ghz versions mind you) and cheapest I see is around 300usd…..dont think 8% perf is worth an extra 90bucks……..sorry…….
I did alot of research before I grabbed the 7870’s, very very close to 7950 perf in most games, 2 of them cost less then a decent 7970 and are a good bit faster to boot…..not that it shows in gw2……honestly gw2 dosnt need much gfx horsepower in its current state, what it really needs is intel and amd to bring out tricore chips that run at like 6 or 8ghz then, maybe we could get 60fps stable in DE’s and WvWvW…….even then i wouldnt be sure…..may also need ram running at octa channel and pci-e ssd’s to help as well…..Bands head into desk thinking about how poorly optimized gw2 is

Yea i know about those CPU’s (i use one myself -.- ) ..i dont mention the 3930k, 3960x or 3970X becouse most people wont buy them for pure gaming since a 3770k would do just as well for ALOT less cost
As for the old 7870 vs new 7870 ..i only say dont get the old one simple becouse the new one is out now and only costs around £170 ..no real reason to get an old 7870 when u can get a better performing new 7870 Tahiti.

I only say to get old ver if you get the kinda deal i got, they cost around 50-60 more each then what I paid for each card, to be sure the new 7870s are better but, I dont think they are 50-60usd better, on the other hand if its the 20-30usd dif at normal price, thats a harder choice…..but either way, your getting a hell of a card for a good price
to me, upgrading your whole rig for 1 game, a game that even the developers admit is in need of serious optimization….seems kinda stupid, If other games you like/play run poorly, then it makes sense, but……gw2……I have seen this game run well on old amd tri-core’s and poorly on modern intel quads, or horrible on amd quad or hex cores and well on intel dual cores with ht…..
this games a mess sadly, but, its still fun.
the funny thing is, I have seen this game run horribly on friends 900x series chips at 4.5+ as well as 3900x chips, nothing we tried fixed it, randomly at times they would just get big fps boosts (patch to patch im guessing) then back to crap…..its sad I have seen worse out of such chips then out of my 1055t/8120/8350…..and my chips are all sposta be far worse for games then theirs…….
on the other hand they do get better perf in some other games…….but then again, encoding for large batches is faster on my system then theirs by a good bit…..
I do wish Anet could get their act togather and get the game optimized, possibly they could hire a team to work on optimization and a team for dx11, and let the current guys work on the bugs and such as they appear to be doing now…..
