Just what are the Discs for?
Just what are the install disc 1 and install disc2 for? I wanted to install most of the game without downloading the whole thing. All disc1 did was start me downloading the whole game from scratch…….
As with plenty of other games that come on discs that also receive updates overtime, the discs at some point were the best method to install the game with if you have a slower-speed connection.
But, as like other games, the amount of updates and file structure changes over-time make installing from discs a worse-method, than just downloading it cleanly online.
Simply put, you probably should just download the full game online at this point.
Coasters?
Because when the game first came out the files there were more right than wrong. Now they are basically mostly wrong. However depending how intelligent the patching software is, a compressed binary patch file is still likely smaller than a full install.
RIP City of Heroes
The discs installed 16 GB of game for me and then downloaded the other oh… 5 GB of updates. :F Or was it 8 GB… can’t remember. Don’t care.
I just got hard copy Heroic Edition (2 discs), and I’ve installed the game, and now its downloading a 15GB patch. Is that the current size of the game?
Looks like I the discs are pointless and all thats needed at this point is the arenanet account code.

The last statement is true (that IS all you need to get the game client, install and then log in). However, the disks do install much of the content so the download is shorter (but still HUGE). The total DAT file (content DB on your local system) size is now approaching 20GB (just over 19GB).
The actual download is only new / changed content and re-downloading any corrupted content. Keep in mind the game has been out for +1.5 years so the new / changed content is rather large.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
There was this same thread back in the start of the game, how people thought that getting the game on disk would be better because if they had to reinstall the game they would not have to download as much. The point I tried to make at the time is that the game will change so much over time that the disks would become useless. All the disk happy people thought I was nuts. Well how nuts am I now, just back up the gw2 dat file after every update and that will fix all you disk happy people.
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens

Agree 100%. After nearly two years, there’s likely not a lot unaltered on those disks that you are saved from downloading. Nature of an MMO.
