I’m looking at a budget of 1k. I’d like a system that is going to hold it’s own for a few years as I normally can’t upgrade regularly. My current system I have had for 5 years and is just now starting to lag behind in some games but I spent 2500 on it back in ’08.

I am not savvy in building or assembling my own. The local company I use is http://enuinc.com/index.php. I’d like to build something from their inventory and have them build it. Of course I am always open to other suggestions but as I said I am no good nor do I have the patience at building my own.

Thanks!

You really should build it yourself. You’ll do much, much better. It doesn’t really take that long and it’s not even hard at all. Watch newegg’s guides on Youtube and you should be good to go.

I appreciate the advice, but just not gonna happen. I’d get it together, something wouldn’t work and I’d beat the hell out of it with a hammer.

It’ll cost me about 40 to have it assembled. I’m fine with paying that.

In that case, order the build I listed on pcpartpicker (or give it a bit and someone will probably list some improvements), bring it in, and have them put it together. Their prices are rather high for parts.

I can always try and find someone locally and buy the parts elsewhere. I’ll look at what you picked out, thanks!

$1k is a bit tight to build a comp for this game. If your current rig is still in decent shape, could you ask your builder to re-use a few parts – the case, power supply and optical drive perhaps (if its SATA)? This might save around $200. That would allow you to focus on upgrading your MB, CPU, GPU and HDD (or SSD). Something like this:

i5 4670 CPU – $236
Asus Z87-K 1150 Motherboard – $141 (get correct form factor, depending on case)
Samsung 256G 540/520 SSD – $255 (solid state drives are worth every penny)
8G 1866 RAM – $84 (looks like your builder carries Crucial)
EVGA 760GTX Video Card – $289
Total – $1005

A CPU cooler is a smart investment at around $40. Maybe your builder will hook you up for being a good customer? If not, dip into the beer fund and buy one anyway. You might also be able to re-format and re-use your current HDD for extra storage.

Good luck!

Great Idea. My case is in great shape, one dead fan but that’s about it.

I would build your own, you will save money and get a better pc in the end. The parts that fermi picked out look very good.

No.

you can go with 1600 ram if it will save you some money. you can just not get a dvd writer/reader and just install windows thru a USB drive. you would want a better cooler if you would like to push the OC and still get decent temps. MSI and Gigabyte are also very good motherboard makers and you should also consider them. the 9000 series of AMD GPUs may just be around the corner. if you are not in a hurry then you should definitely wait for them. SSD for a boot drive. it will give you pretty fast boot and loading times. for PSUs, Seasonic and Corsair are some good brands. case, if you need it, the NZXT source 210 is a cheap case but has a decent build quality. Do you need an OS?

Its not often i see som1 build a rig on PCpartpicker that i have nothing to question over

I concure with Fermi’s build, it would do well and is right at your budget.

re-use what u can from your old rig. HDD’s, optical drives, OS, case, PSU. if u can save enough u can then get maybe a i7 4770k, or an SSD.

$1000 if a good price even for a complty new rig. its an even better budget if u can re-use old hardware, so dont worry about thakittens
when we get people asking for the same kind of performance the rig above gives, but for $600 ..thats when things get very hard, becouse most the time its not possible.

Thanks, it’s rare to see people agreeing on a PC build so I will definitely go with that. My daughter’s fiance is going to build it once I get the parts.

Thanks very much to Fermi especially and the rest of you as well for your advice!

Only thing I disagree over is I think the cooler is on the low end if you are planning to overclock at all.

The 212+ EVO is a fantastic cooler, especially for $30. It’ll do about as well as an air cooler can. Yes, some are better, but at the price point it’s awesome. Also, at least with Ivy, it’s easily possible to get to 4.6-4.8 GHz with safe temps on it.

No problem, and enjoy. It should last you for quite a while before you need anything else.

I would think you would want a little bit larger psu for that build, 500 is the minimum recommended for the 7970, the Newegg psu calc puts the wattage used for that system at 581 watts (and doesn’t include fans etc). Overclocking, will use more power, and aging will degrade its output also. 650- 750 watt seasonic, xfx, or corsair.

Reviews of of the 212 Evo are great but Haswell heats up rapidly when overclocked and I’ve seen reviews with rather high temps on a 212 Evo.

And I agree with No One, 500 watt is pretty much minimum (eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite) with that setup at stock clock. 650 watt will be more than enough for overclocking.

And to quibble, no DVD drive for the Win 8 DVD. Yes you can use the official Win 7 USB install tool from MS as long as you have access to another PC with DVD drive and an ISO ripping utility.

Since the price was at the limit of the $1000 i didnt bother argueing over the PSU. However they are correct when they say its deffinatly the minimum u would want.

I normaly recommend a 650W, you dont really want to be runing ur PSU at close to max limits all the time.

It’ll be hot on any cooler. The 212 is still the best air option for $30.

Not sure how you were putting it in, but I got to 410W using the desktop version of the same calculator.

In general, on a single GPU system, a quality 430-450W PSU is plenty (may need more for AMD, some of their CPUs draw a lot). 500 is more then enough.

The only issue is if the TC ever decides to CF, in which case something like the Rosewill Hive 650W may be a better option. For one card, though, that PSU is great.

And to quibble, no DVD drive for the Win 8 DVD. Yes you can use the official Win 7 USB install tool from MS as long as you have access to another PC with DVD drive and an ISO ripping utility.

If TC’s got a disk drive already, he can just rip the Win8 disk and use Universal USB Installer (fantastic program) to put it on a flash drive and install. That’s what I did, and it worked great.

The PSU is fine. A 650W unit’s enough for SLI/CF- you don’t need nearly as much power as you seem to think that you do.

30% cap aging. Overclocking with 1.3volts at 4.5GHz. I get 504 watts recommended, 454 watt minimum. I normally add a 1/3 at least to the minimum which makes it around 600 watts. My preferred PSU makers tend to have either 5oo or 650 watts so 650. That’s my logic.

The HD 7970 can max out in the 275-300 watt range all by their lonesome (Furmark), they do average around 200 watts but you have to take the maximum into account when sizing. As soon as you bump up the voltage to OC power use and heat shoots up.

I’m not disputing the 212 Evo is a great little cooler at $30. Just than on an OC Haswell you will see 70-80C temps where on an OC Sandy or Ivy Bridge it’ll be 10-15C less.
