LOD is broken.
good question. I’ve always thought it did not change also.
“The distance at which rendered objects transition through varying levels of detail.”
Changing the setting doesn’t make more or fewer objects render on screen, so you’re not going to suddenly see further in the distance if you turn it up to Ulta, it’s about the detail they render in, and the difference is most likely slight enough that you can’t really notice an observable change because the objects are far enough away.
Either that or it is in fact broken, but I would think a dev would have noticed at some point over the last three years if it were broken.

It happened after this recent patch
Can anyone confirm this?
Tried it in Silverwastes and DR. No change when switching between ultra and low.
I’m not sure you’ll see a change by switching LOD settings while standing still.
You should see background sprites generate into 3D models from further away with higher settings. But I dont think that effects Sprites/Models already drawn.
I’ve yet to see a game where LOD isn’t affected directly. There’s also no notice on it that it requires a restart/map load as other settings. But I did a try now again with a restart.
I did move when testing. While, there is a automatic standard LOD on certain objects other things like trees and stones aren’t affected by it and stay at full detail no matter how far you get from it.
I don’t know if it’s ever worked as I’ve had my on ultra since the start.

I’ve been having trees load in, and mountains… When I should be seeing them already in the distance. Going from Low to Ultra, and Ultra to Low does nothing. I have a 980, was a driver released lately?
Whenever I put it on Ultra, it looks the same as Low.
Is there any way to fix this, or do I need to wait for a bug fix?
Can confirm this, the setting is broken atm.
I bet this is partially responsible for a lot of the performance drop posts people have made lately. Mine is set to low but appears to be stuck on ultra, and LoD is always a heavy hitter. It might not be treated as a priority bug for them at the moment, but it’s a huge performance issue.
It works..It might not make astounding visual differences but you just have to know what to look for.

Note: Medium and Low LOD options behaved exactly the same from my testing so Medium was omitted to retain clarity.
