Q:
Latest update severely harmed my computer.
forget about your crazy idea that a game which doesn’t even make registry entries, except one for GW2 showing up at your installed programs-list (MUI and icon related entries doesn’t count), could be responsible for your problem.
about your problem number 5: looks like the only registry entry that GW2 made is missing…you can just remove it from the list of installed programs and simply delete the whole GW2 folder —> GW2 uninstalled
it’s either a software or BIOS change you’ve made around the time where you’ve patched GW2 (un/installed vital programs, messed with hardware drivers, overclocking, etc.) or a issue directly related to your hardware.
but i guess it’s hardware related – your HDD to be exactly.
try chkdsk:

checkdisk will scan your drive for any errors.
you still could do a system restore anytime if you think it’s software related.

How do I run a scan of the drive if I can’t start my computer up normally without it freezing? Would the scan run in safe mode?
yes, you can do that in safe mode too…if it’s the system partition, aka C:\, windows will run chkdsk during the next boot.
alternatively, you can run chkdsk in command prompt at the system restore tool. (if you know how to boot in safe mode, you should know how to start the system restore before booting windows)

I did what you said and scheduled a scan for both my C and D drives, however now my comuter freezes when booting up in safe mode..l
try booting from your windows-dvd.
there should be a system restore option which includes command prompt.
run chkdsk from there.
i’ll heading to bed now, hope you’ll figure out your exact problem including a fix.

You probably have corrupted files preventing the OS from loading or HD that is failing causing the corruption.
I suggest trying to reinstall windows and if that still freezes then you are looking at hardware issues.

that’s what i’ve tried to avoid here. :P

I ran a system restore and I resolved the issue. I’ll reinstall GW2 (I had deleted it from my computer) whenever I have time to do so. Hopefully the same issue won’t happen again.

There were some Windows updates in the last week or so that have been causing similar problems.
