Hey everyone, so I’m going to be moving around a lot for various clinicals and such for school and don’t want to be tied down to my desktop in order to play. I’ve been researching some laptop options and I’m not too familiar on the laptop side of things. I’m trying to keep the price under $1000 if possible yet still run at least 30fps on med-high graphics when I pvp (not wvw, just tpvp/spvp).

So far, I’m leaning towards the Sager 6658 (http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np6658-clevo-w650sj-p-6994.html) but I’d like to hear if this is a good laptop or just anyone who knows laptop parts/specs better than I do for what I’m looking for. If you have any alternatives in my price range it is greatly appreciated.

Again, doesn’t need to be running ultra settings but I want it to be 1920×1080 res, 30fps with med-high settings. Thanks!

Thats a good laptop for the cost. But I suggest going with a 860 or better gpu for longevity.

Desktop: 4790k@4.6ghz-1.25v, AMD 295×2, 32GB 1866CL10 RAM, 850Evo 500GB SSD
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD

This.

I don’t recommend that people game on laptops, especially wireless. Your case is a bit different though. Also, always use a laptop cooling pad. Seriously, I have seen them reduce system temps by close to 20 degrees C.

Hadn’t thought about a laptop cooling pad, thanks for that suggestion. Is the 850 vs 860 really that much of a difference though? The jump in price passes my price range so is that extra ~$70 worth it?

Protip for everyone here. The GT 850M is a slightly underclocked GTX 860M assuming the 860M and 860M are both Maxwell. (There is a Kepler 860M) By this, I mean that the GT 850M and the GTX 860M are the EXACT same. Nvidia did this with the GT650M and GTX660M. They were both the exact same so you could save a tonne of money by buying a laptop with the 650M in it and just overclocking it a little bit (which by the way is very easy when it’s a gaming laptop) The linked laptop in this topic is an absolute steal.

My opinion, buy that laptop. Grab MSI AfterBurner 3.0 and bump up the frequencies on that GT 850M. Or more than and get superior performance without spending more.
Invest in the laptop cooling pad too. Not necessary but nice to have anyway in any use at home.

To sum up Avelos’ post – NO.

@squishy
Thanks for those links, I hadn’t run across them.

@Avelos
Thanks, I’m leaning towards the laptop I linked in my OP after seeing the fps jump is only 25 —> 29 and I’d rather not fork out the extra money for the 860 if it really isn’t a “huge” upgrade or anything.

GTX 870M is only available in Kepler, as is the 880M but that’s completely out of the question here. I imagine that when Maxwell versions come out they’ll do the same with the GTX 600M series and rename the 870M and 880M to 870MX/880MX to seperate the Kepler from Maxwell (like Fermi from Kepler)
