Same FPS issues as already posted by other users, but I am having a hard time sorting though all the posts for useful info.

Normally runs at 60-65 FPS which suddenly drops to 8-10 for no apparent reason.

My machine is more than capable seeing as its a brand spanking new gaming laptop. All drivers are updated and running GW2 only uses about 16-22% of my computers processing power.

Is there any kind of workaround to prevent this from happening?

“brand spanking new gaming laptop.”

Gaming laptops are a gimmick. There isn’t a single mobile chip that has the raw GHz this game needs to run smooth everywhere, nor will there be til at least after Skylake.
Likewise, the GTX560m/GTX660m that I see on the majority of these “gaming” laptops is still worse than a desktop GTX260 from 2008. That’s the price you pay for mobility.

Luckily not all developers made the switch to target low-end machines.

“Raw Ghz” doesn’t mean anything. If they did, my overclocked AMD FX-4100 would be spanking a whole lot of the i7’s out there.

There are many gaming laptops (especially brand-spanking new ones) out there that are more than capable of running this game. Besides, the OP already said that his rig nets him 60FPS normally.

To the OP: I’m sorry this isn’t any help, but you’re in the same boat with a lot of us. There are some very odd performance issues that the game is experiencing at the moment. Hopefully they’ll release a patch with some performance optimizations in it soon.

i’m running this game on a beast of a PC and i’ll have the same issue too; 60fps with everything maxed then it will drop randomly to 15-20 for no reason. i haven’t tried many workarounds but if i turn all the gfx settings down to low i don’t get any fps drops so that implies one of the gfx settings is being dodgy.

Would you stop posting already all you do is kitten and whine and tell people their computers suck. None of this is any help to anyone. If raw GHz was the only thing that mattered, CPU architecture would never change. They would just use the same tech and make it smaller and fast. Luckily that’s not how computers work.

Gaming laptops are fine and not a gimmick. Some of the specific models companies package as gaming laptops are gimmicks but some of them are the real deal.

You could never buy what’s in my laptop in a desktop for the same price and it beasts this game in everything except WvWvW and everyone has problems in there. My laptop has a 570M 3GB DDR5 running at 750MHz Core 1500 Shader 1650 Memory. I get 40-100FPS across the board at 1920×1080 best appearance, med shadows, no reflections. Turned reflections off because of a bug in the new NVidia drivers that makes the environment disappear in places.

Just like any other game though Guild Wars 2 has it’s hot spots. I can recall an area with dredge and tons of explosions and fireballs constantly raining down in an area. I lagged pretty hard in that area.

I am asking for a workaround for a technical problem.

There is no technical problem here. Delta is spot on the money & I agree with him 100%. Doesn’t matter how much tweaking, driver/Windows installs you do. Nothing is going to make a slow laptop faster. By all means, feel free to waste your time trying (I’m sure you will), but it won’t get you anywhere. You’ll realize sooner or later, I’m tipping probably later because you think there is a magic fix for slow laptops.

Once again, please keep your baseless self important opinions to yourself. This a tech support forum. It is not the place to post such things. And if you bothered to read, I am not the only person with a decent rig (laptop OR desktop) having FPS problems. The only reason I posted in the first place was because its hard to wade through the thousands of useless posts like your own to find a bit of good information.

Still Looking for any suggestions on how to make this problem happen less frequently while anet come up with a fix.

“Raw Ghz”? You know how I know you’re clueless?

My own T420s has a 2.7GHz i7 (the 2620M clocks up to 3.4GHz and has 4MB of cache) and a business-class NVS 4200M yet I get a steady and smooth 30-40fps in PvE with all settings on low except for textures on high and render sampling on native.

Not everyone wants a big, bulky desktop and others need a portable computer that can pull double-duty. Take your elitist BS stick it where the sun don’t shine.

Does the laptop have two graphics processors? one for when its gaming and one for when its not? If so can you disable one?
Set all power settings to maximum performance, disable any settings that auto clock down cards/ pci etc..
Double check to make sure.
This game has a habit for some people to switch to the 2D clock settings on some cards could this be happening to you? there is a workaround somewhere in the forums.

I have to do this on my Lenovo that I posted above, the i7 has the built-in Intel HD 3000 as well as the nVidia GPU.

OP, if your laptop has GPU switching you can disable it in the BIOS so the discrete GPU is used all the time instead of the onboard.

Please Jungle Quack post your laptops specs, rather than posting "This a tech support forum. It is not the place to post such things. " over and over.

Proc
Ram
GPU
As well as the current driver build for your GPU.

Also posting your graphic settings for the game and any type of aftermarket clock set for the computer would be helpful.

On a side note since some areas of the game are more demanding than others please keep in mind laptops are not the best at cooling, depending on your model you may wish to prop it up so some cool air runs all around the base. If this is a possible issue there are programs that adjust fan speeds at a more aggressive rate than stock.

Why doesn’t OP just post the laptop specs first before we go pointing fingers back and forth about false and unsupported accusations?

Laptops have decent computing power and maybe OP actually bought one, but the fact he posted in a technical forum with zero technical information about his problem suggests otherwise. Or he’s an airhead and was told it can run anything.

So OP, deliver your laptop specs and we’ll go further.

1) I guess I had to be a little more thorough: raw GHz with a high number of instructions per cycle (be it through a longer pipeline, more ALU/FPU’s, fast last level cache, or better branch prediction etc.). Better? I thought this wasn’t necessary since I never compared AMD’s GHz to Intel’s GHz and the statement holds true regardless of which you pick.

2) I don’t need to know the specs. I look up what intel has in their mobile Ivy line, then look up what nvidia/AMD have for mobile graphics, and notice that a mid-range build from 2008-2009 could match the highest offering they have.

3) If laptops are supposed to be as stronk as desktops, why is my PSU rated at 1250W while I’ve yet to see a laptop brick that provides over 150W? And why can’t my desktop have these divine high-power/high-efficiency parts? Maybe it’s because you trade power for mobility.

But whatever, the “my laptop is best laptop” brigade can keep QQ’ing their hearts out. I’ll continue enjoying the game while you continue waiting for your 500% optimization.

Please don’t edit #3, that is amazing.

Your power supply says 1250W because you fell into a trap. Unless you have Quad CPU and Quad SLI you won’t even use 2/3s of that. Big numbers = better. Amirite?

By your logic my Amd Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz Black Edition CPU should run faster than my I7 2670QM 2.2 GHz. At least I know who is right and who is wrong on this one.

Better components, higher quality manufacture, better (flatter) PSU efficiency curve and less ripple.

Make sure your laptop is always plugged in. Also make sure that your power settings are on performance. If your laptop becomes unplugged while you are playing it, its possible its changing over to integrated graphics to save power. Also for those of you fighting about gaming laptops, take it to private messages.

My specs are

Nvidia Gforce GT 680M – 1GB

Your not wrong for thinking you specs should run the game decent enough… going by the minimum requirements anyways.

However, this game has been out for a while now and there is plenty of feedback on what is actually needed to get a solid 60 FPS. i5-2500k and up basically. It has to be pretty well overclocked too.

Your CPU is pretty kitten good for a laptop I would say. But unfortunately, at the moment this game just needs so much more. Will this get further optimizations in the future? Who knows. It’s certainly not a priority at the moment though.

I know FPS is always a problem in games and people are complaining , but recently it’ been a spike of users reporting this, and users with more than enough power to run the game. And what’s worse is that these aren’t people that just bought the game, they played it well for 2-3 weeks, then all of a sudden, 10FPS.

Sorry if my tone is too harsh, but i’m just frustrated I cannot play the game anymore, and seeing every post with this problem bombarded by “not good enough specs” makes it even worse.

Serious gamers dont play on laptops and expect good performance…
Even if you buy the best gaming laptop money can buy your performance will still be much lower then spending that money for a desktop.

Why do people keep saying gaming laptops…its a waiste of money -_-
