Hey guys, sorry if this doesn’t belong here but I didn’t know where to place it. I was wondering if anyone here owns a Dell XPS 15 “2014 edition” laptop if so, how smooth can it play Guild Wars 2? Highest settings maybe? It’s one of the few laptops I am interested in due to its sleek design as well as power despite not being a gaming laptop.

Let me know or suggest a laptop, I will be buying one soon.

I am using a Presario CQ62 Compaq laptop.. yea… Haha.

I had to actually go google this laptop, from the reviews it seems to be all singing and dancing, could it run GW2 on high settings im don’t know, GW2 is CPU power crazy, and even the most high end dedicated gaming PC Desktops can have issues,

Give the screens native res of 3200×1800, I don’t know how the GFX card/CPU would handle GW2, maybe someone who games on a dedicated laptop can give input here,

The laptop you listed is clearly designed for touch screen and everything that comes with that, im not sure its aimed at gaming.

There is also no dedicated Ethernet port on this laptop, so you will need to be in an area that has great wifi connection available.

Hopefully someone who games on a laptop will give you better input here, Im sure for gaming you could get more power for less money, without all the extra features that, that laptop offers.

do you really need a laptop? cause if you just want gaming then go desktop. if you really need portability then do as you wish.

with this laptop you can maybe play this game in high settings in PvE if you get the one with 750m gpu as long as you lower your resolution. it just won’t be that playable and you are using a laptop screen, you can get away with 1080p or lower if you really want to get higher fps. i suggest putting it on higher res (other than native cause that’s too high) and then lower the settings until you get an acceptable fps. for zergs and WvW, just go drop to lowest settings. even very high end rigs have trouble running max with zergs. also, get a cooler for the laptop.

the XPS 15 only has the 750M for its GPU option. I would NOT buy this laptop for more then $850 because of the medium ranged GPU in a machine branded XP (their high end line).

750M cannot even handle playing Thief at 1080p…..

As other have said the dell is nice but is not a machine capable of gaming as the 750m is a very lackluster gpu even if you down the resolution 4:1 to 1600×900. Medium/low settings with 30ish fps.

Gigabyte MSI and Razer have a few slim gaming models with viable gpus. varying costs from 1600 to about 2.2k similar to the dell with options. (prices may vary)

13"
Aorus x3 1440p 870m

14"
Gigabyte p34g v2 (860m Maxwell)
Razer Blade 2014 1800p 860m

15"
Gigabyte p35g v2 860m Maxwell
Gigabyte p35w v2 870m
MSI GS 60 Ghost (comes in 1080p or 1620p display versions)

17"
Aorus X7 860m SLI 1080p
MSI GS 70 Stealth 870m (1080p or 1620p)

Thicker and heavier laptops are much cheaper with similar performance but if form factor is important then these are the pretty much your only chocies on the market atm.

You don’t also have to go with the “latest and the greatest” machines out there. I play on a older version of the Aorus X7 — the one with dual GTX 765M’s and I have no problem playing the game when I am able to.

Thanks for the suggestion guys, I should’ve been more specific. I am not looking for a gaming laptop exactly just something that can play GW 2. Highest settings if possible but my main focus is a laptop that can handle video and photo editing. I should’ve specify sorry, I was tired lol. If any of you guys don’t have one of those fancy high end laptops let me know and I’ll check it out. Small and powerful enough is what I am looking for. I don’t really game enough other than some casual steam games here and there. You guys rock btw.

These are not “gaming laptops” of old which were desktop replacements and were thick and heavy. The ones i posted before are just as thin (~20mm/.7 inches), just as light, and cost the same/less than a similar spec Macbook Pro or a Dell XPS 15 with better performance. You asked about the dell xps15 which is priced at 1600-2500, which is in the same range as these other choices as well as the 15 MBP.

While they are “gaming” oriented, they will perform significantly better in video edit/rendering applications than a dell xps or a mbp due to the more powerful graphics cards and better thermal management.

I understand the allure of buying from a big retail brand, but currently they are lagging behind in the power laptop sector (focusing on ultrabooks/convertibles) atm and better choices are to be found. Gamers on the go no longer have to compromise performance for portability.

Edit: For video/photo editing, panel quality matters a lot. For this reason alone i would go with the Sharp IGZO panel in the razer blade 2014 due to the large color gamut and high accuracy which beat out almost all other laptop panels atm with the xps 15 QHD lcd coming a distant second

The main problem is mobile hardware that they slowdown or shutdown on overheating.
