Low FPS... CPU or GPU bottleneck??

Hello everyone.

Recently purchased GW2, haven’t played all that much but I’m enjoying the game thus far.

However, what bugs me is my really low FPS-count. Even at the lowest graphics settings, I am merely getting a 15-25 fps average. Sure, my computer is nowhere as good as newer computers, but I can play most games on medium-high settings and get +50 fps.

My computer specs are the following:
CPU: Core2Quad Q9400 @ 2.66 Ghz
GFX: NVidia GeForce 8800GT 512mb GDDR3
Memory: 4×1gb @ 400Mhz
OS: Win. XP. Home (SP3)

Mind you, that I am playing on the lowest graphics settings in-game. And I have set my settings in the NVidia Control Panel to performance.

What is really odd though, is that the difference between the lowest and highest settings on my computer is only about 7-10 FPS, shouldn’t it be… more??

In any case, would like some input on what could be exchanged to yield better performance. Replacing the entire system is not an option, even if 99% of the people around would suggest it.

Thank you.

Your cpu and gpu are too slow for this game but I know you cant replace the whole system so I would suggest get windows 7 and upgrade to a 560ti and should help a little but in crowded areas your fps is still going to be bad.

But according to GW2’s “Minimum Specs”, my components are better than what is recommended. Shouldn’t the game play decently at the lowest possible settings then…?

It would not be a bad idea to upgrade the CPU and Video Card but I do not think this needs to be done at the same time with your system.

The best upgrade you could do for your system right now if upgrading your Video Card which should give you a very nice boost that is very playable. The Nvidia 460 GTX or the 560 TI would be a good choice. Then you can save up for your system upgrade.

What exact mother board do you have a link would do good. upgrading to windows 7 and a 560ti really is not the answer as you have a old board and the ram is nore expensive than a new board. A 560ti will also require a new PSU and they are better cards out their for less $ that would match your CPU better. If it’s a store bought PC a link or the exact model # would also help.

My motherboard nor PSU aren’t that old, I think.
My PSU is a Corsair that sits at 600w I believe. My motherboard is an ASUS P5Q Pro.

This is a really good buy $130 if you get the rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561
I would get that if it will fit in your case, it takes 2 6pin conectors wich you should have if you have a 600 watt PSU.
You should be able to overclock your CPU perty easy with that board, if you can bump it up to about 3.0/3.2 you should see a good boost. (higher if you have the cooling and can keep it stable)

Problem is that I’m in Sweden, so I am a bit sceptical towards shopping out of the country.

Hmm, overclock you say… Never tried it, so I don’t really know how that works out. Know any good guides on the net? Maybe there’s even software for it?

You low fps is due to your CPU being to slow. Even ur GPU is very outdated , but the reason you see little difference when changing graphcis settings is becouse your cpu is whats causing the main slow down. Changing options that affect the GPU will have little effect if its the cpu causing the slowdown.

To be honest your computer is atleast 5 years old tech wise (doenst matter when you got it) And when a computer is that old its generaly considered time to upgrade ..specialy if its a gaming rig. Additionaly when you wait that long between upgrades it mean you need a completly new rig…if you were upgrading a part every year or so you might get away with cheaper upgrades each time ..waiting 4 years or more between upgrades though will requir a good chunk of change since you needo t change pritty much everything at once.

In your case.

CPU – cooler – motherboard – ram – powersupply – case (maybe) – GPU – Sata HDD’s and optical drives. Plus anything else u may need to upgrade to see best results. like a good HD monitor or a SSD for faster access times.

if you can’t afford a completely new build, start with a GPU upgrade for now.

I run Q6600 @ 3.2ghz with GTX 660. Getting about 40-65fps @ 1680×1050 best appearance setting in PVE which is very playable. However, WvWvW and crowded cities it still drops below 25fps.
