For the last 2 weeks I have been searching the internet trying to find a valid reason why Guild Wars 2 was running so slowly on my PC even though I have a mid-range card and was playing other games fine. I checked my CPU temp in my bios and it was running at 88 degrees. I took out the CPU, cleaned off the old thermal compound with rubbing alcohol and reapplied some new compound. Now my computer is running at 45 degrees and Guild Wars 2 jumped from 5-17 FPS on medium setting to 58-63 FPS on high settings. This was the last thing I expected to be the problem, but it may help some of you, especially if you bought your motherboard with your CPU already installed. Who knows if the manufacturer did a good job? And even if your CPU is running at 60-70 degrees, dropping to 45 might just make the difference. Good luck all of you and hopefully this will help someone!

many people dont know how to do this, it can be shocking how much dif good goop can make vs the stock stuff they use.

intel stock cooler on a sandybridge with stock goop vs pk1, I have see as much as a 15c dif at load….on amd, can have similar results if you use the stock cooler, I rarely do, pretty much every amd i build has a higher end cooler on it

always makes me laugh that most people who want intel want a 3570k or 3770k but balk at buying a decent cooler because the chips come with one, yet most amd buyers I have dont even blink an eye at buying a decent cooler…..

i do not get it but, yeah I really do recommend this, also a cheap cooler that totally destroys any stock cooler is the coolermaster hyper 212 evo(evo version not the normal ver) its not the best but its cheap and VERY effective.(destroys any stock cooler)

Indeed the CM Evo 212 is not the best by any means but for shear price : performance ..its the best there is ..cant complain about its performance for $30-$35.

Next step after one of those is bassicaly top of the line Air cooling like the Noctua NH-D14, costs alittle over twice as much ~ $80.

After that ur into High end water cooling costing around $110..

After thats its custom water loops. cost ..many many $‘s/£’s :P

Buying anything inbetween those is imo a waste, those are pritty much the best performance points to aim for in terms of cooling.

TIM wise ..well i personaly used the stuff (NT-H1) that came with the NH-D14 as it was reviewed and for an inclusive compound it did really well. Still if u want those few extra degress u cant really beat the liquid metal componds.

well, SN, my Aiger comes in close to the big boys like the d14 and silver arrow but costs 55-65bucks(depends where you find it) its a bit more work to mount as you have to replace the backplate and mount the bracket but, its keeping my chip at 54c max under 13hrs of p95 custom(16gb ram and 16mb max unit size) the evo couldnt do that, (wish it could), I got a swiftech apogee drive II im just waiting for a couple more things and im gonna setup a custom external water setup on the cheap( I got heater cores and tubing when dangerden was going out of business really really cheap)my plan is a funky custom loop using a 2 gallon bucket as the res, mounting the heatercores(rads) to the lid with 2 slow silent 120mm cm fans(pulled from my cosmos wrait and medusa cases before i built the systems in them)

in the end, the most expencive part was the waterblock, next was the pumps, but as you said, those cost, $55 for 2 ddc t1 pumps
http://bmaverickddcpumps.wordpress.com/buy-ddc-pumps-here/

great buy, guys got a great rep across many forums

thats probably PK-1 compound, good stuff, pk3 is just a tiny bit better……thankfully neither are prone to drying out

So you guys are pro’s about cooling ? I need some help for my computer too. For now i have the basic cooler mounted (yes shame on me) But i have an ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard, Corsair Dominator Platinum 16 Go (2 × 8 Go) ram.
Now the ram is pretty high. Like 5cm (2 inches for the few country’s who don’t use metric units :p).
So I was afraid to by a huge cpu cooler like a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 would not fit with my ram. I know a can put a watercooling system, and if i really don’t have a choice I will take that, but first i wanna know if there is any fan cooling system who fits in. It still cost less than a watercooler.

The price for new lower profile RAM + a NH-D14 would easily = cost of a good water cooler..say $40 for G.Skill RAM and $80 ofr a D14 ..its roughly same price as a Corsair H100i which is ~ £120 iirc.
So i sugest u get a mid range air cooler. One that will fit tall RAM. You will have to search around and check the dimensions.

The Coolermaster Evo 212 ..it can just about handle mid range OC’s if ur ok with that. If u tweek voltages as much as possible i dont see why u couldnt get a 4.5ghz OC on a FX8XXX or even a Intel Ivybridge i5.

Well there is no way i change my ram. I payed for the corsair and i will use it :p
I have tried to find an air cooler tall enough, but couldn’t find any. The Noctua NH-U12P is already pretty high, but still under the 2". Maybe it will fit, but i don’t like the have the fan touching the ram if there is just enough space :p So yeah I’ve been looking for a water cooler. For now the basic fan still keeps the cpu under the 40°c so i’m pretty happy. But summer is coming… and the room can get hot very fast

Well height isnt an issue on the narrower single tower coolers like the Evo212 as they dont overhang the RAM, so u could get that.

there are a few options that may suit your needs hoegarden.

but my advice, buy a new ram kit, sell what you have, its not bad ram, but I avoid tall kits, they are just for show, those fins arent needed.

now if your only using 2 sticks, put them on the outside slots, and any decent air cooler should fit.

the other options are break down and buy an AIO water cooler even if you dont really want to.

http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm

look at the amd options.

what I personally would do, get a 32gb gskill ares kit(im a bit partial to this kit, it kicks kitten then toss a d14 or silver arrow on there.

as to water kits
AIO sealed kit best is http://www.amazon.com/NZXT-Technologies-Premium-Performance-RL-KRX60-01/dp/B00ANJRTXE (amazing for what it is, it smokes the stuff corsair and the like are offering….

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/amdcoolerkittenml some of the intel coolers are also useable, this is what there is to grab thats air but none of its gonna work like you would want with tall ram…tall ram sucks.

some custom starter kits
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/coliki.html

http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l2/g30/c83/list/p1/Liquid_Cooling-Water_Cooling_Kits_Casekittenml

they got a huge selection of water kits.

you could also just pull the sinks of your ram and use the silverarrow(better then the d14….) but that would mean possibly voiding the warr(depends on how easy they are to take off and put back on)

again, I have yet to see ram where those sinks where not for show….and i have seen hundreds of ddr3 kits….

Anyway, changing ram is not an option yet. Maybe when i make a second tower, i will consider taking normal ones. So for now the watercooling is my best option if I understand you both correctly.
The OP has in any case a point. Keeping the temperature down will increase the performance of the cpu. The basic cooler from amd is not that bad, but it is limited.

I never really looked for this because I always use the Artic silver 5 but look on page 5 at the chart. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-January-2012/1468
And just for fun the Hoctua NT-H1 came in just below Mayonnaie but would probably last longer:)

Using the stock cooler so I would say you are not overclocking. This would be a big upgrade over the stock cooler. (139mm tall)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103064
If the fan hits the memory just move it to the other side pulling air through instead of pushing air in. You could do the same thing with the hyper 212 but make sure it will fit in the PC case you have (190mm tall)

I just bought a new laptop with WIndows 8 32-bit (my mistake) I have an AMD a6 2.7ghz proc, and a radeon 7520g hd GPU. I have a 4gb RAM drive but only run about 16 fps at best.

I have looked into many options like adding a pair of 2 4gb RAM sticks, and i have turned down all my settings . I don’t have any other games and I use an external for downloading music and movies.

I was told though I would need Win8 64-bit before I could actually add more RAM, any suggestions or advice.

they may say its for cooling but honestly, its not needed, they do it for show, i have seen some cases where those big fancy sinks trap heat….(no im really not kidding) a buddy had a VERY VERY high end kit, he changed coolers and we had to pop the sinks off, thankfully it was easy on his, he stored them in the box the ram came in just in case, the ram actually ran cooler(he always puts a thermal probe between each pair of sticks(3 for 4 sticks) the temp droped by around 7c….just by removing the nearly 2" tall heatsinks…..i do admit they are neat looking but…..they are also for show….
