Mac version crashes constantly
Yeah, the Mac version is pretty woeful.
I run an IMac too and the only way I can beat the crashes is by lowering my graphics settings to Best Performance and then tweaking them a little so I can at least see people as they do look and not ugly default characters. I sulked having to do this at first because I bought my Mac for the graphics capabilities, but it saves the frustrations of crashing. I haven’t crashed now in a long while. I understand the crashes are caused by out of memory errors. The PC users have a 64 bit version and that helps with their crashing issues. Apparently we can’t have that on the Mac because of Cider.
You might like to browse this very long thread to see that you are not alone: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Can-we-please-get-a-working-Mac-Client-Merged/page/12#post5996216
It is true that being in a party can often bring you back to the same map but I understand wanting to play solo. I do too most of the time. One new feature of the game is having a Commanders squad to join if there is a Commander at the fight. This will also bring you back to the same map if you crash and the squads are usually set up just for that fight alone so you can just leave the squad at the end of the fight.
As Figlilly points out, the mac version of the game just doesn’t work very well.
It’s a port, rather than a native client. Which means that it’s not going to run perfectly. On a mac GW2 is run through a Cider wrapper, which basically emulated the necessary components that GW2 would need to run in Windows, but on a mac. The first thing that this does is take up a whole lot of extra resources, because your computer isn’t just running GW2, it’s having to translate a whole lot of DirectX calls into OpenGL (macs don’t have DirectX, and GW2 isn’t designed in OpenGL). The second thing this means is that there’s a 32 bit limitation imposed on GW2 on a mac. Meaning that the client only has access to 4GB of ram – which, on top of the fact that the game has a bad memory leak, means that regardless of how much RAM your computer has, GW2 is going to crash a whole lot.
If you’re able to install Windows through bootcamp then I’d strongly recommend it.
If you can try Window bootcamp. I know many Mac user do not want this. I finally give up on junk Mac beta (for over 3 year) client and do bootcamp Window 7. It is like brand new game. Can play on medium and some high setting and it look so great like game I never see before use junk Mac beta (for over 3 year) client. Can use 64 bit client with bootcamp and this help me more.
There no hope I think for GW2 Mac beta (for over 3 year) client. I think Anet can not fix and should stop advertise it to Mac customer.
