My MacBook pro really, really hates GW2 and I’m on my second fan repair and I can’t figure out why this game puts so much stress on a 2500 dollar laptop.

I’m thinking it’s a thermal paste issue and not the game but has anyone else that owns a piece of kitten MacBook having this problem?

I know laptops aren’t made for gaming but I never had any issues playing Tortanic except that that games engine is a piece of kitten.

Is GW2 a game or a virtual casino?

Apple computers being not truly designed for gaming do get stressed under extreme gaming conditions.

There are two third party fan control programs out there, they are FanControl and smcFanControl, I use FanControl on my MacPro sure helps to cool it down.

PS: What does a piece of kitten mean ??

Apple computers being not truly designed for gaming do get stressed under extreme gaming conditions.

It’s the same hardware, the only thing that makes it not designed for gaming is the fact that it doesn’t have DirectX. The real problem is that there’s an layer between OpenGL and DirectX. There’s a lot of overhead when doing a port this way which is why the Mac client requirements are that much higher than the PC client’s requirements.

More than likely, your heat issue isn’t a problem with the hardware. The game is pretty CPU intensive and with the extra overhead of translating DirectX to OpenGL it puts that much more work on the system. Like washac said, a good ventilation pad should help you out.

Washac kitten means poo or any bad word you can’t use here because people flip out over cursing.

I’ve read about the fan control apps so I will check them out. Is it bad to use though because if the fan is needed to cool I don’t want to turn it down.

I have a cooling pad under my macbookpoo but the fan still makes insane noise.

I have this game on my bootcamp partition so maybe I should just play it there? Would that help with the direct x issue?

You’ll get better performance on Windows, I normally do that when I want to WvW. I wouldn’t suggest turning down your fans either, you risk burning out the computer. There’s a reason they get so loud.

Depending on what kind of cooling pad you got it might actually be making your problem worse because the macbook pro with a unibody uses the aluminum case as a heat sink. Im playing on a mid 2010 with no problem and I don’t use the fan control or a cooling pad. just make sure you play on a solid surface that will work as a good heat sink for your computer don’t play on carpet or on a bed that wont aloud the heat to transfer well.

You could look into an external cooling solution that works well with the unibody MacBooks.
Also you should definitely experiment with running the game on Windows. The performance will be better, and you can alleviate some of the heat issues by setting a limit to the framerate, so your graphics card and CPU aren’t constantly running at 100%.

Due to the ultra-compact design of MacBooks, heat will always be a bigger issue than with other notebooks. That’s the pice you pay for this form factor.

Bear in mind that your Macbook is also made of metal and the top- and bottom-cases function as giant heat sinks.
