Hello, I currently have a desktop with a 660 TI Video card, It is starting to have some coil whine and im looking to replace it. Honnestly the only game i play anymore is guild wars 2.

Im looking to spend about 300 hundred total and was wondering if anyone can reccomend something that will run guild wars 2 on high settings. Processor is a i7 2600K so i should be fine there. Sorry if this has been asked over and over, if its a issue ill remove it

You’ll need more then a 750ti for GW2 if you want to push everything. Get a 760- ones from EVGA run something like $230-$250 iirc.

A r9 270 (7870) or r7 265 (7850) at 180 and 150 respectively will run gw2 @ high just fine. The amd cards are finally coming down in price making them viable from the price/performance gaming aspect.

Or if you want to spend your entire budget for a higher end card for a higher rez monitor, then a 760 (230), r9 280 (300) or gtx 770 (300+).

At that price point (well just above) an R9 280X or GTX 770. A GTX 760 isn’t that much faster than your old 660Ti and the step below the R9 280X (boosted HD 7970) is an R9 280 which is a boosted HD 7950 which isn’t a lot faster than your 660Ti either.

$300 is a tough price point, not a lot there.

When you look at the specs… a 7970 is faster than the rebranded R9 280X.

regular 7970 is 925 MHz core, 1375 MHz RAM

7970 GHz Edition is 1000 MHz core with 1050 MHz core boost
and the RAM is posted at 1500 MHz.

R9 280X (rebranded 7970 Ghz Edition) is posted at 850 Mhz core with a boost up to 1000 MHz and a 1500 MHz RAM clock.

You could just get a new 660TI if you’re not fussed.

True but there is only one HD 7970 OC to 1GHz up at NewEgg. Everything else is an R9 280x, but some of those are also OCed to 1GHz+.

I’d get any of the ones factory OC’d to 1 GHz that way it’s worth the money.

Read the OP’s post. He needs a new GPU.

“Honnestly the only game i play anymore is guild wars 2” – if my english is bad pls corrent me – that means that GW2 is only game that he play?

So thats why i am not recommending him new GPU – get watercooling and OC that CPu to 5.0Ghz

EDIT:
I understand – get 7970 like they said

Just, facepalm.

He wants to replace his GPU. That’s what this topic is about. Keep it on that.

You should not get a new gpu just because of Coil whine.Coil whine is NOT a defective, there is nothing wrong with your card At all.

Watercooling? Watercooling would make him spend his $300 on watercooling parts alone…. And that’s just for a lower end watercooling setup. Keep it realistic to his budget.

If you are me and value a quiet system, then you would find it reason If I heard anything more than the woosh of fans in my system, I would get infuriated… In fact, part of the reason I actually do watercooling, despite it’s money sink of a hobby.

Coil whine can happen even on new cards when there is absolutely nothing wrong with the gpu itself,You’re actually hearing the power regulation hardware hitting the resonant frequency for that particular electromagnetic coil. When you are putting the circuitry under one-hundred percent load, you pumping the maximum current through it and since we do not have perfectly efficient electronics, waste electricity is given off in the form of heat, vibration and thus sound. Now please, this is a very oversimplified take on it. It’s actually the magnetic field of a coil that causes it to vibrate and thus produce sound.

As for cap squeal, same concept. Electrolyte in the capacitors intake a relatively large amount of energy in a short amount of time and thus causing heat again. You’re actually hearing electrons in the electrolyte moving around very quickly due to the constant charge and discharge cycles they go through.Enabling Vsync in most games, can lessen or remove the coil whine noise. The more fps you get,the more coil whine you can hear.

There is no danger in this at all, your card is not defective, and your card will not suddenly burn down in flames…Dont worry.

Also,Headphones.

My Beyerdynamic T90 and DT990 600 are both open aire design, so that’s a no go on the headphone theory

My system is fully watercooled for noise reduction, sooooo, regardless, I will not have a system with coil whine myself. It is personal preference, and I choose no. As far as defective, you are absolutely right, but I will not tolerate my PSU or GPU to have it

Fair enough, I feel his pain in irritation from it though, it can be quite the nuisance

Every GPU will have coil whine, its whether or not u ever get FPS high enough to get it. For example my GPU is dead silent now its on a water block, BUT if I run Ice Storm bench test I get over 1000 FPS easy and the coil whine kicks in at roughly 500 FPS +. If the OP’s 660ti is producing coil whine and VSync is OFF in GW2, just turn it on and it should go away. If its got coil whine at low fps, say anything under 100 FPS, then if its getting annoying ether RMA if its still under warranty, or just sell it on to somebody who doesn’t care about noise and buy a replacement like a 760.
