Need help with choosing a CPU for this game
I know that GW2 is badly optimized and benefits from single thread performance, so I plan on buying an Intel i5 4670 for my new pc build. However, I am also considering getting the i5 4670K to be able to overclock.
Can someone with a 4670K confirm whether overclocking it makes a big difference in FPS? (This would be in wvw zergfests where FPS can drop significantly)
It does, but the OC mainly affects lower end GPUs more then Higher end GPUs.
Example,.
HD7790 with a CPU OC of 4.3Ghz would take the FPS from 80` to 110~
R9 280X with a CPU OC of 4.0GHZ would take the FPS from 109 to 120~
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD
as for you buying a CPU now. Wait for the next release of Haswell (4690K and 4790K), as the price of the current 4670K and 4770K will drop 5%-10% when they are released.
Also, make sure you buy a Z97 based motherbaord since you ARE considering overclocking. As the new Haswell 4×90K CPUs require the Z97 chipset to work, and that will set you up for the next release, which is Broadwell.

Thanks for the info!
I think it’s rather weird that the FPS increase is biggest with the lower end GPU though. Isn’t that because of the 4.3Ghz and then 4.0Ghz?
I have a GTX 660 btw.

Its because the CPU is now slower then the GPU in most aspects.
With my HD7790 my CPU would cap at about 75% per core usage. With my 280X, I now see my CPU capping at 95%.
The more OC I push the better the FPS is going to get from this point on. But I dont need more then 120~ FPS for this game (I never dip below 23FPS now). So to reduce the heat and the power consumption I limit my CPU to 4.0Ghz atm.
