Hello all
I want to upgrade my system a bit, it’s been a few years since i did that so now is good time as any.. i could play pve good enough, but i’m missing WvW due to the fps problem. I’m using athlon x2 2,6 so u get the picture

I was just wondering if any of this setups would run Wvw on at least 15-20 fps on low settings (don’t care about fancy graphics much)…gonna get cpu, mobo and ram with some old gear and need some help before i buy and make mistake..other use would be office word and internet browsing

1. amd a10 5800k, asrock a75 and 2×4Gb DDR3 2133 MHz – would use onboard graphics
2. intel i5 3470, asrock h61 and 2×2Gb ddr3 1600Mhz (don’t ask about GPU in that case
could build something with fx 6xxx series but that got even less score on single thread benchmark then a10…other i5’s and i7’s or fx 8xxx series are just too expensive here…even that i5 is arround 220$
i know that i5 is stronger cpu than a10 but i’m leaning towards it cause of the iGPU which is more than enough for my gaming needs, just not sure will it run WvW

thx for reading, any help or other ideas would be appreciated

If that i5 is also with the integrated gpu? Then you’re probably not going to get decent fps with either of them. I still think the i5’s cpu performance is a lot better than what the a10 will give you though.

So in conclusion i’d save a little bit more money so you can buy something that is a little better. (for example a weaker i5 combined with a dedicated gpu)

well i could go with gt 630 or hd 6670, anything decent with ddr5 is another 150$ which is too high for me for just one game (only play gw2 and not planning anything else in near future).

i could run it with old hd 3650 (really, didn’t upgrade in a long time ), did work well on low graphics with that athlon x2 for pve and spvp, but not sure if that’s a good idea with the i5.

so no hope with a10 for wvw?

thy for reply

A GTX 650Ti can be bought for just over 100 bucks (after rebate) which will be able to play GW2 on a mix of medium and high settings in a crowded LA with a solid fps of 30+ at a resolution of 1600×900. This is my choice of card at the 100ish price range having upgraded my sibling’s graphics card which was an old 9800GT. Anything under 100 bucks isn’t worth an upgrade in GPU IMO because tomorrow you’ll need another upgrade.

GW2 runs on CPU much more then on GPU. Stronger CPU and a cheap later on Graphic card should be ideal. My integrated GPU is however 10-30% stronger the 3470’s HD2500 integrated. So I got both strong CPU and cheap Graphic card in one item.

WvWvW and guild bounty get hard on any GPU, also, advanced graphic settings. But performance mode is very well made and forgiving.

it’s no us or eu so prices are at least 50$ higher, and i don’t play any sp, just gw

i5 3470 and hd 6670 (or gt) could run it, at least decently on medium/low settings? including WvW?

Depending on your definition of decently, the stock i5 3470 will need to be overclocked to 4.5Ghz ish to be able to get 30+ fps in the worst case scenarios. The stock cooler likely won’t be able to dissipate all that heat generated by the extra voltage and transistors switching at a faster frequency, so an aftermarket CPU cooler is in order as well. A commonly suggested cooler that is cheap and performs well for its price is the Hyper 212 EVO by CoolerMaster.

As for graphics cards that are meant for media, I can’t speak for their performance in games.

i5 3470 can’t be overclocked unless you have a motherboard with unblocker on it.

Also, 4.5 GHz is way overkill, 3.5GHz being more realistical, but true, the more the better, but it has diminishing returns.

EVO is an awesome cooler for it’s price!

hd6670 will be ok-ish for GW2, not even acceptable for other games.
hd7770 is cheap and competitive, compared to the previous one.

All of intels non k series CPU should be able to OC 400mhz higher than their max stock turbo. After that u can tweek the base clock to get a little more out of it but thats it.
That still allows 4ghz + in most cases. The 3470 turbo’s up to 3.6ghz IIRC so u could get a 4ghz OC on it via the multiplier. That will deffinatly help.

As for GPU, a AMD 7770 is probably as low as u’ll want to go, they cost betwen £80 and £120 depending on brand and level of Factory OC. Im sure u can find one of the cheaper models.

So yea OC the 3470 to 4ghz ad get atleats a 7770 or a 560ti and u should be able to hit ur mark in WvW.

Nemaca, since ur new to the forums ill point out that 4.5ghz is by no means overkill. GW2 has been found to requir atleast a 4.5ghz on Intel CPU’s to stay above a minimum FPS of 30 in big wvw zergs. AMD FX 8k series CPU’s also need atleast a 4.5ghz OC to stay above 25 FPS. Anything less and u can expect the minimum fps to start droping.
Being able to run at 3.5ghz in WvW and get say 40 fps is all well and good but that wont be in major Zergs, what most of us here in the forums mean when we say ‘minimum fps in zergs’ is really BIG worse case zergs and FPS figures.

The money people have had to spend to upgrade their cpu/mobo because of GW2s’ crappy optimization could equal the GDP of a small latin american country.

That being said. If you can get a K series, it is in your best interest to do that. Solar Nova’s recommendations are pretty much on the money.

my advice would be something like this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HxYw

you could easily oc the cpu to 4.4-4.6 range with that setup, and it will SMOKE the 3470 once over-clocked, it will also be cheaper(the 3470 costs the same as an 8350 here and in the UK when i checked with a buddy who lives over there)
