Need a second opinion on this build. My current machine is getting very long in the tooth (6 years+). It’s still decent enough for gaming, but I’ve had to sacrifice quality and am getting noticeable performance issues, especially in GW2, so it’s time for an upgrade.

I’m hoping for this one to last about the same amount of time as my last build and still be decent. What I did with my last machine was use stock settings until the last year or so and then OC it a bit when I stared noticing that it’s a bit slow to buy a bit more time, so I’ll probably do similar here.

The Caviar Black & 660 Ti were recent upgrades last year, so they’ll be recycled on this build.

Does anyone see any red flags/things they’d recommend against using & suggested alternative? Removing the 2 parts that will be recycled this fits perfectly in line with my budget of ~$1000.

Your input is appreciated! Thanks!

If you’re going to spring for a 3770k you might as well throw in a few more bucks on a better cooler than a 212 Evo. It’s a good piece of hardware for the price but there are better coolers and Ivy Bridge chips run very hot when overclocked. For a few more bucks you can get a Thermalright True Spirit 140, but I’d recommend the Thermalright Silver Arrow series, the Noctua NH-D14, or the Phanteks PH-TC14PE if you want to push the chip.

I’ve also recently switched over from Arctic Silver 5 to Tuniq X2, it performs slightly better and is not electrically conductive.

I agree 100% with the better cooler.
The Noctua is great and you should get the TuniqX2 as well, good stuff that.

I totaly agree with another CPU cooler.
Compare the cooler with the Cooler Master Hyver 412 SLIM.
as terminal compound maby you can use: Arctic MX-4.

Normally it doesn’t make much sense to wait when buying computer parts, but since you’re starting from scratch anyway – Intel will release Haswell in June, you may want to wait until then. And the PSU has more power than you’ll ever need, unless you plan to add a second graphics cart for SLI in the future.

I would also recommend a better cooler. The NH-D14 is a monster air cooler, its very quiet(infact its silent), easy to install, and has top of the line cooling performance, it also comes with some very good thermal paste (NH-T1) in the package.

however i would also advise that u wait.

Intel Haswell will be coming out in June, which isnt far off, and it may well only perform 5-10% faster, but ever little bit helps and its always best to upgrade just after new tech is released rather than at the end of the life of current tech.
The 3770k is LGA 1155 which is a dead end socket. The Haswell chips will be on a new socket.
