New pc and worse FPS? *Returning Player*
Unfortunately GW2 isn’t optimized well for newer technology. It still uses DirectX 9 and only has 3 threads (last time I checked), so it has poor scaling on multicore CPUs.
Most of the in game settings will do very little for FPS as the game is heavily CPU bound. The only significant FPS boosts are from turning reflections and shadows off. They also let you control character culling a bit with the character model limit and quality settings, turn these down for zergs.
The stickied forum post “FPS and Performance based issues” from a year ago is still the only thing you can do from your end.
That is really unfortunate and kind of absurd. Because even if they game doesn’t take FULL advantage or higher end cards, the cpu clock I have is higher and is much faster than the Phenom was. To see a performance decline is kind of silly.
Anyways, I will take a gander at that post you mention to see if anything helps. If not, it kind of sucks that they actually may be losing some player base from something that should be ironed out by now.
Thanks for stopping by.
The clock of your 8320 might be higher than the 955 but putting cor beside core, the 8320 is half as fast. It’s kindasorta like taking the 955 and cutting each core in half and then calling it an 8 core. For Guild Wars it’s total crap though because hurrdurr game runs like beta and so far nothing’s been done about it. I got tired of it and just bought an i7 4770K and saving for the board still. I get playable and enjoyable fps for what I do which does not include wvw or lots of world boss events anyway. AMD FX-8350 at 4.1 turboing and 7970 crossfire (disabled for gw2)
Pro tip: Turn off shadows and reflections.

1) This game only uses around 3 cores of performance across 40+ threads, period.
2) An FX’s core needs to be clocked roughly 20% faster than a Phenom II’s core to get the same performance.
3) The game does not stress the GPU all that much. Past a certain point additional GPU performance is superfluous as the game is primarily CPU bound.
What OS are your using? There are patches from Microsoft to slightly improve performance of FX series for Win 7, Win 8 already has these built in.
RIP City of Heroes
And yet, a new GPU solved my FPS issues. And that’s odd to me; if the game is so CPU bound, why would a new GPU solve it? Admittedly, my old board was around three years old. And hey, I’m not complaining!

Because your old GPU, a Radeon HD 5970, was a dual chip meaning it had crossfire always enabled. Some games perform like absolute crap with it enabled, and Guild Wars 2 is one of them.
Just a note I noticed my older Nvida drivers work better with GW2 than the newer ones do, but this is only GW2 I noticed this so far with. With your card it may be a similar case, try older drivers and see if it helps.
You can check out my thread, maybe that will help you!

Now I’m really curious! I tried playing in windowed mode which, I thought, effectively turned crossfire off – it was still crap. Mind you, I’m not tech savvy enough to understand all in’s and out’s so my assumption is probably way off reality.
To the OP: it does seem, at least from the threads I’ve read here, that AMD has problems with GW2. Even though your CPU is clocked 500mhz higher than mine, I hit a max of over 200FPS in PvE (although it’s more typically around 160). In LA, that will drop to around 45 with medium culling settings.
I’m not going to suggest changing your CPU however; I just hope Anet provide some optimisation for AMD users.

Probably the worst optimized game as of now imo, cant balance handle cores/threads properly. coded in kittening direct x 9….. llike LMFAO what is that ahahaha yeah this game is bad end of discussion as far as optimized goes
What does that term mean? How can a game be optimized or not optimized? What’s the difference?
Edit: also what is kittening

Optimized is to generic of a term it’s more of a buzz word people like to throw out when something is not working for them. yes the game runs on an older version of DirectX and may need to be tweaked a little but the game on a whole runs fine. People are having issues yes but for the most part those issues get sorted out with a little work and most likely turn out to be something with there system. I have been playing this game since beta with no issues. You will not get top fps but you can get reasonable playable fps. I get 30 to 45fps in LA and 60 to 80 in explorable areas. I don’t PvP or WvW much so no sure what I get there but anything over 30 fps anywhere is playable. If you are old enough and grew up back in the day before HDTV you all watched TV at 30fps and HDTV is 60fps so getting over 60 is overkill in a video game. The game is not photo realistic is more like good animation so why is everyone so bent on fps if you get playable levels then play the game, if you don’t then there is an issue with your system NOT the game.

Dude please im tired of people making excuses for A-nets failure to optimize a god dman game. Direct X 9 is a huge part of it running like crap it runs pretty good for me but look at the setup im running nobody should need that to max this game or hold 60fps at all times thats kittened. if they re-coded it in direct x 10/11 it would balance cores/threads properly or alot better and graphics cards or newer generations could take full advantage of more modern versions of direct x but instead its people like you that are like OH NOOOO ITS NOT THE GAME OR HOW ITS CODED OR PROGRAMED ITS YOUR COMP dude… please go the hell away thats a joke… this game is plain and simple unoptimized and alot of people know it and then theirs the special bunch who wanna cover it up and say oh no the game runs great lmao yeah maybe if you’re running what i am or higher which alot of people dont have money for and shouldnt be needed to play this game smoothly.

Wow and that’s why I get good playable 30 to 80 fps on my i5 CPU and GTX 650 graphics card because the game on old DX9 and is not optimized I can play and I’m happy with it because I know how to set up a PC to play this game

Why Dx9? Because the game started development in 2007 and back then gamers were rejecting Vista which had Dx10. Dx9 was an upgrade over the GW engine which was Dx8. They did make it multithreaded, since it won’t run on a single core but beyond spinning the renderer off into it’s own thread as well as spinning off some helper/utility threads that’s about all you can do with a Dx9 based renderer since Dx9 is not multithread safe.
Yes, you could argue they should have tried something like the UR3 and add in the kind of support needed for an MMO that wasn’t provided by an FPS engine. Others have (AION uses CrysisEngine for instance). Design the extensions right and you could have kept up with the UR3 updates that folded in Dx10 and Dx11 as well as better multithreaded support. But it’s always a crap shoot when you rely on integrating other people’s code as oppose to home grown. You don’t want to be reliant on someone else fixing their code to make yours work.
Anyways we got what we got. Accept that it’s unlikely to get significantly better in a short period of time and learn to live with either sub 30 fps or simplified graphics in those areas and activities where the current engine chugs.
RIP City of Heroes

Who cares if it’s old DX9 or DX11, I could care less the game works it’s fun and that all that matters, if you don’t like it go play something else that runs on your precious DX11 just drop it in not worth getting all work up about it. DX11 is not going to be the magic fix for everyone’s issues. Systems are still going to have problems there is no prefect solution, go to any online game and check out there web site they ALL have support and they ALL have issues not because the run on DX9 or DX11 it’s because every system is different and telling people there is no hope for this game because it doesn’t run on DX11 doesn’t help them solve their issues. So if your as good with computers as you say you are give constructive advice not negativity.
