Hi guys,

Looking to get myself a new desktop and I’m after some advice.

I know Reflections and super sampling can be an FPS killer but would the below system be able to play GW2 with everything else on high at 1920×1080 while recording game play at at least 20fps ?

I mainly play guild v guild and Zerg v Zerg in WvW.

1 x HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
1 x Seasonic G series 550w ‘80 Plus Gold’ Modular Power Supply
1 x Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2)
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache – OEM (DT01ACA100) HDD
1 x Corsair Carbide 200R Compact ATX Case – Black
1 x GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2×4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Changes are welcome looking to spend between £800-£1000.

Thanks for any help.

Since ur getting the Noctua beasty i asume u will be OC’ing. Get the CPU to around 4.5ghz and the answere will be ‘yes’

Maybe get 16gb RAM just for a bit of future proofing. G.Skill, Corsair, and Mushkin are all great makes.

Also u may want to look into the AMD 7870 Tahiti XT graphics card .. its as good as a 7950 at 1080p resolutions and can be cheaper. Look for the Sapphire 7870 XT or Club3d 7870 Joker.

You will be able to play at high even with reflections. Not sure about super-sampling, as I myself do not use it. I have a comparable system (3570k @ 4.4, GTX 670) and I can play and record at 60 FPS and 30 FPS respectively. Though if you hope to record zerg v zerg, you might want 16GB of RAM and a 3770k. I suggest Dominator Platinum RAM from Corsair, as they just look awesome.

avoid ram with tall sinks, if your going to stream or record, you may be better off with an 8350@4.5+ then with a 3570k or 3770k, the extra real cores do make a dif as shown.

http://teksyndicate.com/videos/amd-fx-8350-vs-intel-3570k-vs-3770k-vs-3820-gaming-and-xsplit-streaming-benchmarks

watch that, the 3850 handles streaming/recording (same process really) better then the 3570k or 3770k….

its up to you, the intel do have better single threaded perf, but amd are kicking some kitten on multi threaded perf.

the amd will run cooler with that cooler then the intel, this is due to the cheap shoddy thermal paste intel used under the cap(ihs) on the chip between it and the core…..

http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/39369-intel-cuts-corners-ivy-bridge-thermal-interface-material-tim/

Just something to consider, if you dont mind voiding your warranty you can pop the cap and put some good stuff on it like liquid metal(best for this use from a few reviews I have seen) or pk-1 from prolematech (or grab pk-3 its good to)

the funny part is, people have this impression that amd will run hotter….hehe

if it was me, I would just go with a socket 2011 MOBO because at the end of the year Intel is coming out with the new socket 1150 line. The E series of the ivy and sandy bridge might cost a little more money, but at least that socket will be supported for a little while longer..

tsmith: at least you hope it will……but alas, intel love to change sockets, anything anybody buys now will just endup being non-upgradeable once haswel comes out, no real need to change the socket, other then intel needs to sell more chipsets and motherboards!!!

thats the sad part, intel have made VERY VERY minor changes to the socket just to force people to buy more chipsets…..

Actually the reason Haswell is using a new socket is that it’s moving the VRM (voltage regulation module) from the motherboard to the CPU.

Not exactly a minor change, and not something that can be made backwards compatible.

I would stronglly recomend the i7 3770k if u want to record, u can also move to 2011 socket and i7 3820, or even may be 8core AMD 8350 will blow away the i5 in any high quality gaming streaming or recording, specially in heavy CPU bounded games like GW2.

Non amd cpu will blow intel in gw2 so if you plan to build the cpu for guild wars mainly go with intel.

I might be an AMD fan, but I love to see a new "tock" from intel! and thank you, only heard about the new architecture, but not about the VRM move. thanks the for info!

I lol’d =p my AMD phenom II x4 @ 4.0Ghz plays this game flawlessly....and this is with a GTX 460 gpu. Heck, even when I had it clocked only to 3.5Ghz, and then 3.7Ghz it still played great. never went below 35 fps in very crowded areas, and in every other place 80 FPS+

Yeah sure you do on full hd with high graphics sure…. I want a screen shot from a big wvw when you dont drop to 20+ with amd cpu oced so low. Face it the game at its current state need at least 4,5 ghz i5/i7 to stay in 30 fps range in zergs all the time. Everyone can say hey i get 10000+ fps with my wooden cpu or smtn but i say screens or didnt happen. Amd is cheaper generaly and works fine with games that are better programed but hell guild wars just likes 1 strong core so intel is the way to go for this game.

I know what my rig can do, I dont need to SS anything.
as for WvW, I normally get around 40FPS. Everything besides shadows (medium) and reflections (off, don’t like them) is set to high at 1680 x 1050 lol maybe if you did some homework, you would understand you dont need to sepnd $2K to build a good computer =p

fail troll is fail

*EDIT*
Then again, I dont need a PC that can get me over 100FPS to play a game. 40-60FPS is perfect, for me.

I hear ya bro you sound mad? your old PC will not get 30FPS in a wvw zerg you could probably make a video of it and it would look like a picture.
And my PC is better than yours I get a steady 120 FPS everywhere.

But I do agree you do not need a $2000 PC because $850 will run it just fine.

Its not about "trolling ". Your not even using full hd so dont say the game runs fine… not getting steady 60 fps all the time is not fine at all ( well some ppl says 30 is smooth but for me its just slideshow). Sure you dont need to spend tones of cash just to get the game working but buying amd for gw2 is just stupid. Op said he wants to run the game fine so he should consider only intel (im not a fanboy i use amd cpu in my other rig).]

Ps. Dont get 7xxx series from amd for gw2. Cards are good but drivers sux. Alot of ppl are having graphical bugs with thoes. It took them year to fix “flickering” with their 13.2 drivers.

Quit fanboying lol. If the game runs fine for the person who’s playing it, I don’t see why you care so much

LOL im just saying that so OP wont buy smtn like amd procesor and then wonder why his game runs like crap. And no the game does not run fine i doubt he even gets thoes 60 fps with thoes settings but i dont rly care. Its just that some ppl read stuff like that and then cry that the game runs soooooo badly. when they buy bad computers.

something you all need to remember, there are cases where lesser systems for whatever reason are getting better perf then higher end systems, I have seen this myself, it makes no logical sense, but…….its a computer and its gw2…..they dont have to make logical sense….

and I have dual 7870’s and have no problems in gw2, no flicker on 12.11beta11 or higher drivers(got mine after the 12.11beta11’s came out), I have no artifacts or game breaking bugs.

I do complain about Anets poor choices with this game, and the fact it runs like warmed over donkey on many peoples high end rigs.

the fact is, this game has some serious bugs, but, its also fact that some people with older lesser systems do run with better results then some of us with new current gen top end systems…….I HAVE SEEN IT MYSELF, its INSANE but it is what it is.

now as to the idiot who said amd cant play this game……thats funny......2560×1440 i rarely see 30’s in de’s i get random momentary spikes into the 20’s (never for more then 1-2 overlay updates), thats higher then HD(its called qhd infact), the game also has ZERO perf hit for me by using supersampling or shadows or reflections…..for whatever reason they just dont seem to effect this game for me perf wise……

and according to you fanboi’s, my system cant play this game….LOL
