Normal ping but lagging
I’ve had this too lately. Periods of extremely sluggish play. Skills taking multiple seconds to activate. Jumps not registering but queueing up and all the jumps I’ve attempted in as much as 30 seconds suddenly being performed one after another like some crazed chimp. Several other typical lag phenomena.
Yet, the ping displayed under the Options window never goes over 60 while I should be looking at averages of at least 3000 at these times. No FPS loss or any kind of resource issue on my side.
I should run a ping from outside the game, which is what I’ll do when it happens again.
very possible it goes beyond your own isp, and even arenanet, the internet services that provide for you and anets isp could be having trouble at a main line somewhere or could be doing stuff.
But thats just a guess.
It happened again, and I did a ping from outside the game this time.
The in-game ping shows a 60-70 average. Outside the game, my ping shows good results in the range of 25-31, but with an occasional time-out. A trace shows packet loss at a node close to the game server.
The in-game ping display doesn’t take packet loss into account, which is actually impossible to take into account of course, when calculating an average.
It leads to this unintuitive situation where the game shows a decent ping, but the game is lagging badly.
