Sounds like you didn’t apply your thermal paste correctly if temps are shooting up so high while using an aftermarket CPU cooler.

I’ve never had my CPU overheat while playing GW2, so I would agree with Dark Jericho, it sounds like your thermal paste isn’t applied correctly. GW2 is a more CPU based games where a lot of other games are GPU based. Has nothing to do with how it is being optimized.

Replace your potato cpu cooler and properly apply a good thermal paste, it’s not the games fault.

There kitten veral YouTube videos on how to apply the CPU cooling compound. The pea method is the best and never spread the compound with a plastic card or your finger, let the heat sink spread it when you attacht it to the motherboard. Chances are you forgot to use heat sink compound or you used way to much. In this case more is not better, the thinner the better.

1. you didn’t use effective thermal paste
2. you didn’t set your heat sink correctly
3. you most likely don’t use gaming case with air cooling installed
4. you are probs trying to play zerg content with all settings on ultra and wondering why your machine is over heating
5. you most likely have OC your CPU to high and have a very poor low quality “after market” heat sink. esp if it was a very cheap one which are no better then stock coolers.

if u must apply thermal paste apply a pea sized amount of paste in the middle of your CPU and then apply the heat sink. this causes it to spread evenly along the entire surface of the CPU and heat sink plate.

and when you say “aftermarket cooler” may I ask what one you are using and is it intended for gaming use ?

also as for “optimized game” I found gw2 is a very optimized game and they even fixed the FPS drops in certain areas of the game that was a huge issue
(this was areas of the game where certain fx or back grounds caused the game to render it 4x more then normal and locking frame rates to around 25 when looking at it even with vsync diabled)

examples of this before they fixed it was

CoF the back drop at the entrance
the fire shaman world boss when even with no players
the Fotm thermanova level when u had to use the shields to reflect the repulse blasts (that screwd my fps so badly and now its fine no more issues)
im still not 100% sure of that secret asura lab in metrica (the one u use a power crystal to open) as that would cause my game to lock up at 20 fps when being in that area.

but I would also like to note I have a high end gaming PC with my OS on kitten and GW2 on its own dedicated SSD with no other game / program on it. and I run high maintenance on my machine and keep it running extremely well. which as a result gives me very reliable performance every day any day

The game does stress a CPU quite highly, but any overheating issues is ABSOLUTELY a hardware design / configuration issue. A CPU should be able to run at 100% utilization indefinitely or the cooling in the system is simply insufficient for that configuration.

First things first, your CPU isn’t the best one for GW2. I used its predecessor for about a year and had more trouble than was worth it, though it never overheated the way yours seems to. Anyone I asked about replacing it with your model told me to stay away from it, and they were right. Sadly, in this case, I have to advocate for a proper Intel CPU instead of an AMD one if you want optimal results.

That said, it still works, just not great. And you can repeat a brainless task for a thousand times and still make a mistake the thousand and first time you do it. Lots of people have built their own PCs for years, and sometimes, a tiny mistake is made regardless. So maybe swallow your kitten pride and check the thermal paste already. The number of fans you have is plenty, and either you really made a mistake when installing your CPU cooler (it happens, don’t freak out about it), or something in your system is busted. Or you just happen to run a lot of stuff at once, and that’s just too much. The easiest solutions should always be checked first, before punctuationlessly ranting at people on a very specific game forum who never even saw your system.
