I am huge WvW player in this game and I would really like to continue playing it, but as soon as a massive zerg fight appears my FPS drops down wo 10 and sometimes below to 8.

I have tried everything I could possibly imagine besides over clocking. I do not know my exact specs but i do have an I5 processor, a GTX 570 and i have 16GB of ram. I know this is not specific enough to ask question about but I have a general question.

I would like to over clock my graphics card, but should i also over clock my cpu? and if anyone has any experience with this and has done this, did it help with the FPS?

I do not think that you should overclock your graphics card. If you want to though, MSI Afterburner can help you with that. Otherwise, you do not need to do that for this game, Guild Wars 2 is more CPU intensive. The unfortunate reality of this game is that literally only the strongest CPU based computers can get the most FPS (brute forcing is the way to win apparently) so for an i5 processor, I’d have to say that getting to a clock frequency okittenHz will start to yield better FPS.

Another user I’ve seen with 6 core Intel i7 processors at very high clocks (like 4.4 to 4.6 GHz) said that they don’t even get the best FPS in the game on wvw.

What model is your processor specifically? and your board? If you have a capable cooler, then I’d recommend looking up overclocking tips for your board and processor combination. Otherwise I’d recommend start turning down CPU heavy graphics like shadows, reflection, character detailing and culling levels.

OP u dont want to touch ur GPU. Its ur CPU u would want to OC.

But ull need a motherboard that supports OC’ing and a CPu thats is unlocked (it should have a ‘k’ at the end of its name. i.e Intel i5 2500k)
Non k models (locked CPU’s) can OC slightly , but only by about 300 mhz and thats only if the motherboard allows it.

So u really do need to find out the exact specs of ur rig befor looking any further into this.

If you aren’t experienced with overclocking, I recommend that you don’t do it. If you do it incorrectly, you can actually hurt performance and cause system instability.

Anyway, you should probably learn a bit more about it if you still want to attempt it:

I run an i5-4670K, Have 16GB of ram (@1600Mhz) and a AMD7790 (Mid to Low-High Card) and I don’t feel the ‘need’ to OC for WvW. Heavy Zergs Ill see my FPS drop down to low 20’s, but Ill never drop below 18FPS anymore.

When I OC to 4.6Ghz (up from 3.2Ghz), Ill sustain 25FPS in heavy zergs.

BUT, even when looking at OC’ing you need to consider your in game settings.

Shadows – Low
Post Processing – None (Important, as it hits your CPU)
Sampling – Native
Character Limit – Low
Character Model Quality – Medium or Low(I run Low if Im playing Commander, Medium if im not)

Even on my Older AMD setup (PhenomII) I could do ‘decent’ in WvW (low teens to mid 20’s) as long as the in game settings were low enough, even when I had my chip clocked at 4.9ghz-5.6ghz(water cooled).

But Unless you are running a FX8350, or an i5/i7 Gen4, you cannot expect that much out of your system for WvW with this game. That’s how poorly coded GW2 is.

______
So to avoid posting two messages physically, I’ll just add on to this one.

I’ver overclocked my FX-8350 to 4.7 GHz once and had hardly any increase to my game FPS on guild wars 2. Same overclock on an Intel processor would probably yield much better results…

Overclocking can have it’s benefits, but it really depends what you are after, what cooling you have, is it worth it if you pumping extra volts into it?
(At a certain point of voltage it will slowly start to degrade the cpu over the course of next year/few years)

Overclocking is also a good way to get the most out of your cpu, but, I would not do it simply for fps gains, as the fps gained from overclocking I don’t see as being large enough to warrant it just for that.

Now, having said that, there’s always a chance of messing something up, but overclocking in general is rather safe, as far as cpu goes anyway. Go download CPU-Z and run it, screenshot it, upload it at imgur or tinypic and post the pic here for us.

*Thanks Solar for the sig xD I gave up on it a while back due to the limits :P *

The sad part is that the game is so terribly un optimized that people feel the need to overclock their top if the line processors in order to run the game with acceptable frames.
Almost 3 months since we were promised noticeable performance tweaks but not a single dev word or sound uttered about it.
I am starting think they said that just to get us off their backs.

it’s very simple

THEY CAN’T

They are using a modded (read as Gen2) version of the same Graphics Engine from Guildwars1. They have pushed it to such extreme’s with Guildwars2, they rely on the CPU to sort out the mess they caused by doing this.

There is no easy fix, other then building the game from the ground up again, and I don’t think ANYONE here wants to go through what that would mean.

So while we wait for bigger badder Intel/AMD CPUS (Look at the AMD FX9*** series coming out~~), just be glad you can actually PLAY the game, and it wasn’t scraped in favor or a rebuild.

Yea so in ur buddies case he has added on an extra 3x or 4x multiplier (iirc 400mhz higher than the stock boost clock is the limit..might be 300mhz though ) or added a base clock boost, likely to 105×37 for 3.88ghz or x38 for 3.99ghz.
So yea it is possible to OC a locked CPU but there is a limit.

*Thanks Solar for the sig xD I gave up on it a while back due to the limits :P *

Squishy I agree. I am interested in the fact that they made an official statement regarding performance and haven’t said or done anything yet. I could come back to haunt them.
Fx 1000 or i12 20 core processors probably won’t help much. Gw2 wants raw clocks, thus why most people oc to their thermal limits.
So when that next gen 7ghz CPU comes out we might be ok.

Solar, it took me 20 min to make my sig fit lol

Storm, grab LN2, LiquidHelium, or DICE and you can hit 7GHz on majority of i5/i7
