I just received an email from guildwars2 @ ncsoft.c** via bluehornet.com about this weekends event. Whoever is doing this really took the time to make the email look legit. Until I hovered over the more details tab in the email and it linked to a completely different site. Just be careful guys about these emails.

Everyone should always be extremely careful when opening any email, ensuring it’s sent from who it appears to be. Thanks for the report, Phaze Delta One.

I had gotten this one too. It linked to https://www.guildwars2.com/en/events/halloween-2012/?utm_source=newsletter_gw2&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=email_

Can we please get a quick confirmation whether or not it is legit, so we users don’t need to worry about it potentially having malware?

The email source consists of this:
http://pastebin.com/1pxUjira

So can someone please confirm if this is legit? Or if at least we should have gotten emails yet?

I don’t know that that was a phishing attempt. We did send out a Halloween newsletter for both games.

Can you provide me with the “phishy-looking” details of that email?

That came from us. You can tell because the active link — not the one you see, but the one that is actually embedded into the link — is guildwars2.com. Now, if you saw guildwars2.com but when you moused over it was not guildwars2.com, I’d be worried.

It’s good to be cautious and even suspicious about emails. One trick I learned was not to click the live link, but to right click and copy it, and examine it in notepad and if it legitimately links to the site I expect, then insert the link into the browser “by hand.”

As a side note, I would note some irony/amusement in that they are sending these ads to both valid/open accounts and to customers who they have banned (either wrongfully or rightfully).

You’re very welcome. They are both cool newsletter — GW and GW2 — and I don’t want anyone to miss them.

Oh dear. That doesn’t seem quite right, but I am not sure how to prevent it. I’ll talk to the newsletter person about that.

Thanks Gaile. Don’t get me wrong, the event looks awesome and I hope I’ll get to play. But given my situation it does feel a little bit like getting kicked whilst down.

Hey Gaile, unfortunately I don’t have the email anymore. But when I originally received it and hovered over the more detail tab (about a quarter way down the picture) it didn’t link to the address Kain Francois.4328 posted. It had another address associated with it . That’s why I stated in my OP that whoever is sending it, took an awful lot of time to make it look legit. Another thing, every email I have gotten from ArenaNet since I pre-purchased my GW2 account prior to BWE2 has always gone straight to my inbox. Including the one about the shadow of the mad king, the valid email you guys sent. The particular email I posted about went straight to my Spam folder.

I also noticed I got the newsletter on every email account that I ever used for GW1 and GW2, not just the current one.

I don’t think that these kind of newsletter mails should be sent out at all. gmail has qualified your last one as spam anyway.

When I play GW2, I ususally have 3 firefox tabs opened. Twitter following you, the gw2 forums and the official gw2 wiki. Also, whenever I login to the game you are able to inform me about anything new going on.

I see, that newsletter mails reach out to people that not actively pull news as I do.
But is this really a good idea?

I would assume that the majority of your (potential) customers prefer news pulling over push. Go ahead and be a good example. Don’t send out newsletters and thereby help the internet to become more secure.

Like I tell my dad. If you get an email and you have no idea why? Delete it.

A while ago TB had a mailbox question about whether he thinks gaming shows would work on TV. And I absolutely agree with him that the format (push) just doesn’t match the audience.

I have to disagree on this one. Only a few of us are martial arts and computer experts. Joking aside, marketing likely shows that without “push” information (aka advertising) most customers wouldn’t know what’s going on. That’s why companies spend so much money on polishing such products.

Sure, there’s going to be the technophiles out there who pull information and fact-check everything…but most probably don’t. I confess I also read the forums, the wiki, sometimes reddit, and have GW2 on my iPhone Twitter ap…but I didn’t even notice the Halloween thing until I got an email on it. A few minutes later my daughter notified me about it when she got her email. And she’s a bigger junkie than me. Neither of us really noticed it until we got the glitzy email.

I’ve received 0 (zero/null/nein) Halloween letters =( that makes me feel sad.

I too, like the OP, received the spam version earlier tonight (I also received the legit one when it was first sent out, as well). Is there an e-mail address that we can forward the spam e-mails to, similar to how other places allow users to report spam e-mail being “sent” from them?

I believe we’ve established that the emails received today were legitimate, and not spam or phishing attempts.

I believe we’ve established that the emails received today were legitimate, and not spam or phishing attempts.

And I do believe I’ve been awake for far too long today; apparently staring at the source details long enough and the link that appears while hovering makes for bad things. I should’ve clarified originally that I received what appeared to be the spam/phishing attempt e-mail that OP mentioned; and of course now after your lovely smack to my head (thank you for that, honestly!) this is all irrelevant. This just goes to show me that I have to either go to sleep or get in the game at hours like this, instead of checking my Spam folder’s new e-mails, reading source details and checking for answers.

My sincere apologies, and thank you, once again!

I think I’ll go to sleep now.
