Hello all,

Pretty self explanatory, while I play GW2 my computer completely shuts down with no warning. I cannot replicate the issue in anyway. I am not doing anything specific in game, I do not have any specific running outside of the game. And it does not do it every time I run the game, but it does seem to do it at least once a day. I have contacted the tech supports of the company I bought the computer from, but both they and I agree that it is not an hardware issue. I do not have this problem with other games and I have just recently reformatted (thinking it was a corrupt memory issue), but the problem persists. I have also ruled out the possibility of my computer over heating. I have searched and found similar threads about this, but they were months old and things could have changed drastically since then. Let me be clear that I have had this game since release and this issue has only started happening within the last week.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I understand there will be info some people may want to look at, so by all means ask and I will do my best to post it ASAP.

Thanks

sounds like a failing power supply. Pretty typical of prebuilt OEM units as they tend to cheap out on the psu. Do you have another one around to plug in to see if that’s the problem? If not a cx430 will only run you around $20 and is pretty decent.

They are wrong. It’s most likely a power supply issue as dodgy said, though it can be other hardware causing the issue.

How could a power supply issue only happen while playing GW and not every time I play GW? Wouldn’t it be consistent?

I had the same issue.. after a while I realized that the oldest part of my rig was the harddrives, they were pretty ancient.
I bought a new fancy one and the problem was gone.

Not necessarily. Electronic components can have numerous types of failures.

I have an old Antec power supply that once it warms up, will no longer power on the computer. When it’s cold it works fine. Turns out that the 5 volt standby voltage drops as the unit warms up. It is now a spare PS that I use just for testing.

Yes, it could be something else. I would start by substituting a known good power supply. That will give you a definite answer regarding the PS.

Often manufacture will under rate the PSU depending on your CPU and graphics card check the rating on the PSU if it’s 400watts or less replace it, get one at least 600+ That way if you ever want to upgrade to one of the newer high end graphic card you are covered. For a PSU to be UL listed and sold in the US and most other countries it has to have thermal overload protection so it doesn’t over heat short out and cause a fire. Since GuildWars will drive you system to its max chances are your PSU thermal over load has kicked in shutting down the PSU and your PC. I have seen this happen in systems running a 500watt supply, so no matter what your system tech support is telling you the problem is with your PSU or some other hardware related issue,

HI arenanet,

this is the only game I’ve been enjoying lately but for the first time on Sunday my client started lagging bad and for the first time on my new laptop, i got a blue screen of death.this made me very much frustrated to point of being very much dissapointed. .I would like any kind of feedback and advice what can be done about this.i have all my important documents and contents on this pc. I.I hope you can fix this bug. I’ve found that the lag peaks on dungeons and fractals not very much on anything else. Hope this helps.

sincerely

Like everyone said, it’s either the PSU or overheating. You said you ruled out overheating but not sure how exactly you did that. Try running Prime95 till the temperature stabilizes itself, also get HWInfo and look over all the temps displayed there, might be the VRMs that get overheated not the CPU. Same for GPU, try running FurMark and see if everyhing is ok.
From my professional experience a PC shutting down is hardware related, be it overheating, failing PSU or failing MB.
If something software related goes really bad the PC is just restarting itself, not shutting now, the support guys you talked with are useless.

@leonidash: Same thing, check for overheating, might be your CPU or GPU throttling down due to it, hence the worse performance and in the end BSOD.

I don’t want this thread to be buried, especially since this problem hasn’t been fixed yet. I have HWMonitor, Prime95, OCCT, and CPU-Z but I am not tech savvy enough to really understand it. If someone could explain what I should be looking at it and how I should use these apps, that would be great. Also, if anyone would like to see my PC specs, I would be more than happy to display it. But because I am computer illiterate, I am not sure specifically where to get what you would want to see. So just let me know.

Sorry, I really don’t have time here to cover how to use all of those programs.

With HW Monitor, just run it and look at the temperatures and fan speeds. As long as your fans there show a number, they should be fine since this is a new system. Most of your temperatures will probably be in the low 30’s when your computer is just sitting there not doing anything intensive (except for the graphics card – it may be in the 50’s or low 60’s).

I believe that your power supply is bad/insufficient and you are just spinning your wheels doing unnecessary testing . On top of that, it seems that the company is intentionally misleading you so that they don’t have to deal with fixing it.

The way I see it, you have two options:

1) Send it back to the company and have them fix it (it’s under warranty right?).

2) Substitute a known good working power supply as a test or replace it.

If you look around, you can find many guides on how to replace a power supply, it’s really not difficult to do.

Good luck.

Edited to add: One more thing you can check:

Open the side of the case and make sure the CPU fan/heatsink has not jarred loose. I’ve seen that happen from rough handling during shipping.
