Just wondering if anyone else has this problem? It happens regularly. I can have hours of perfect gameplay, then go to use the portal to Divinity’s Reach and the game crashes. I’ve had other random freezes, but this one particular thing is a frequent occurrence… like once every three or four times I use that portal. It feels like I’m gambling when I use it as to whether I’ll get through or crash.

AMD Athlon II X3 435, 4 Gigs of ram, Radeon HD 6870 (with latest drivers), Win XP sp 3.

I haven’t got the error code, but I’ll write it down and include it here next time it happens… which it will, I’m sure.

Best guess without knowing what kind of crash error is this, See Part 5.2 of this thread for possible workaround/fix

Thanks, kirito. At least it’s good to know there’s a possible explanation.

It just happened again. There was no error code on the message, just “A serious error has occurred that prevents the program from continuing to run.”

So it could be a 32 bit issue? Hmm… guess I’ll have to think about finally upgrading my OS. :-/

You know what, it’s just portals in general I’m having trouble with. I was suspecting the one to Divinity’s Reach because I’m still fairly low level and was using that one the most.

But, I just had two crashes in the last hour or so crossing between two maps, just 15 minutes after starting the game, then again, about 40 minutes later leaving Lion’s Arch to Gendarran Fields.

It’s very frustrating.

Just to update this… I upgraded to Windows 7, 64 bit. The problem appears to be gone. I played over four hours last night and again this evening, went through multiple portals (between maps and into cities) and didn’t have a single crash.

The only weird thing now is that when loading to a new area, the game minimizes and flashes to my desktop, or any recent screenshots for a second and then loads the area. It’s a minor annoyance considering I don’t have the crashes anymore. Here’s hoping that it stays this way.

Hi Taris – If you’re still experiencing the issue with the client minimizes and flashes to your desktop, I’d like to collect a Game Advisor report so I can look into why you might be experiencing this issue. You can download the Game Advisor application at the link below:

http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor/

Please note that you will be automatically prompted to install Game Advisor upon clicking the link. Once you’ve generated the report, you can attach it to this thread by clicking “More posting & formatting options…”

Hi Ashley, thanks for your attention to this matter.

It’s not that big of a deal, just a minor annoyance that kind of detracts from the feeling of “immersiveness” of the game.

Not sure if calling it minimizing is correct or not. When I go through a portal, the loading screen appears like normal, then just before the area loads, I get a brief flash (less than a second probably) of my desktop, or if I’ve taken any screenshots during the current login session, I see my most recent one flash fullscreen.

Hi again Taris – Have you tried repairing the client yet? I also noticed that it looks like you do not have a valid installation of Direct X. This could be due to corruption or you may just not have it installed. Either way we should update this.

This is what we are seeing currently from your Game Advisor report that you provided:

================ = Installed DirectX ================
– x86
– x64
d3dxof.dll – 6.1.7600.16385

The first link will provide you with the June 2010 redistributable which will force Windows to update Direct X. I provided this link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 (download and run this first)

Once installed, please use the following link to install all material post June 2010 for Direct X. Again this link is provided below:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 (download and run this 2nd)

Hope this helps!

I used to have this problem on my old pc. The cause was too high graphics settings with a 32bit OS. Even tho the game ran fine on medium detail there’s a hard limit of memory usage for programs in 32bit windows. it’s 1.5gb. For some reason using the portal causes the game to try and use more than that limit. The crashing stopped when I changed the detail to low. I suspect its something to do with the amount of memory required to load the textures. Higher detail more texture memory needed. More memory than 32bit windows will allow it to have.

Ashley,

I installed the updates in the first link you provided. When I ran the file from the second link, I got a message saying the current version was newer and no update was needed.

The condition still exists. I also noticed something similar with Guild Wars 1, only it’s a quick flash of a black screen. So it appears to be some kind of quirk with my system. I’ll try any other suggestions you have, but I’m not going to worry about this little issue.

I’m just happy that GW 2 is no longer crashing on me all the time. I was a little irritated that I need to change my OS just for a game, but I’m already getting used to Win 7… even liking it. So I guess I should be thankful for the nudge to finally give up my old faithful and reliable Win XP.
