This is more of a question then an issue. I currently have a 1 gig GTX480 video card and play guild wars 2 on max. However my monitor is an older 20 inch wide screen LCD so my res is reletivly low. I was thinking of upgrading to a 24 or 27 inch. My concern is if I did so and my res went up to 1920×1200 or the highest I could go would my frame rates suffer a whole lot? I’m not sure I can afford a monitor and a video card upgrade! I do want to upgrade my display though!

Thanks in advance!

i use a hp w2408h monitor and a 5850. i get 50 fps in pve and like 15-30 in wvw. i do not play on high becuase my pc is older and cant handle it. so i play on a little less then high. still looks great but my preformance is better. i will say this though make sure the monitor does 1920x 1200 my old monitor did 1600×1100 or whatever it was. the 1920×1200 makes all my games look amazing.

Yes, your framerate will suffer. If you double the resolution, you quadruple the number of pixels that the graphics card will have to render. That means more work to paint on textures, apply shaders, apply mapping, etc.

And just in case… The physical size of the monitor does not affect performance at all, only the pixel resolution does. So a 24" monitor at 1920×1200 is just the same as a 27", 32", or 60" monitor/TV at 1920×1200 (Ok, a TV will stick to an HD resolution of 1920×1080, but still…) Just don’t let anyone tell you that moving from a 20" monitor to a 27" monitor will lower your framerate because it’s a bigger size.

So there will be an impact and you will most likely have to make some trade-offs to keep the performance in an acceptable range. Of course, it’s really hard to say how big of an impact it will have until after you get the new screen and give it a try.

Yea mine is now is something like 1600×1100 or something around that anyways.
right now I get 40’s- to upper 50’s pve and 30’s-40’s in wvw. My cpu is an i52500 (locked) running 8 gigs or ram on win7 64. GW2 is such an amazingly beautiful game I want to be able to play it on a larger monitor and a great resolution! I’m just worried about my frame rates sinking like a rock.

I have an i5 2500 (locked) so I can’t OC it but ehh… So you think I’ll be good to go with my current card if I get a 27 inch monitor?

I have a GTX480 and run it with an X4 PII @ 3.7ghz (not exactly a top of the line gaming CPU), at 1080p with everything maxed out (apart from maxed water reflections – as i don’t like loosing a few FPS when no water is around), the graphics card has never gone over 70% usage – heck i can even run it with supersample but don’t as it’s hard to spot the difference.

Simply put, this game will never use all of your GTX480 even at 2560×1440, let alone 1920×1200 as the game is CPU bound in a lot of areas – so the question is, what CPU have you got to go with the 480?. Will you see an FPS drop?, most likely, will it be your GPU causing it?, most likely not.

Screen grab of my current usage, all maxed out and a custom 2194×1080 res (for better FOV).

I was looking at ASUS VE278Q 27 for a monitor.

Umm, LOL… You never go over 70% gpu usage because your cpu is bottlenecking. I get 99% GPU usage on BOTH my 660TI’s in some areas running 2560×1600. Your fps will crash/burn when there are a few people onscreen no doubt. 60FPS looking at not much at all isn’t very impressive.

Simply put, you really don’t know what your talking about.
