I was having this out of memory error crash several times daily. My fix was reinstalling Windows 7 from 32 bit to 64. Apparently 32 bit can only use up to 4 gigs of memory and 64 bit can use 64 gigs memory. 0 out of memory crashed since I reinstalled and its been 1 month. Btw, I had 8 gigs memory but I removed one 3 weeks ago. I now have 4 gigs and still no out of memory crash. I’d highly recommend changing to x64 based windows.

The problem users face with out-of-memory errors is usually 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. The user has a system with 2GB or less available memory before starting their game.
  2. The user has sufficient available memory but is running a 32bit operating system.

The first problem is easy to solve – find more memory, either close down background applications, upgrade your ram, tweak your operating system to use less memory etc.

The second problem is caused by the limitations imposed by 32bit architecture. Now the simplest solution if you use a 32bit operating system is to upgrade to 64bit (hence why ArenaNet mostly offer this advice). This will resolve your problem so long as you do not become problem #1 afterwards.

If upgrading to a 64bit operating system is out with your control then there is another option available to you. Guild Wars 2 is Large Address Aware and on a 32bit system this allows the client to go beyond the imposed 1GB limit that non-LAA executables face. However this new limit becomes as high as the available “user space” allows. On a 32bit operating system that user space limit is 2GB.

Guild Wars is a hungry game we know this because it like to have a minimum of 2GB of ram, for breakfast. Users of 32bit operating systems can increase their user space at a cost. Providing users have 3GB or more physical RAM, they can tell windows to increase its user space using the /3GB switch parameter.

On a 32bit system with 4GB of RAM the new user space will become 3GB allowing any Large Address Aware program to use upto 3GB, This should be enough for Guild Wars 2.
Happy Days! Although remember there is a cost, that cost is the space used by the operating system istelf (the kernel) suddenly just lost 1GB of address space.

Now on most home user systems this may not pose a problem as the kernel is focused on usually dealing with 1 user and its needs. However on a enterprise server that is focused on dealing with multiple users with an unknown limit, this can be a major problem.

So if you cannot upgrade to 64bit, you can try the /3GB switch, and if you notice no other problems afterwards then its pretty safe to assume that your operating system is getting by just fine. However If you start to get more problems like your operating system crashing and no longer stable, then reverting back to way things where is simple. Turn the /3GB switch back off.

You can read more about this issue here.

Either way enjoy a crash free gaming ahead of you.
