A brand new account that I have no heard of, or spoken to (in or outside of guild wars 2), has send me 105g through in game mail with no message. Should i report said account, return the gold, take the gold + report, etc?

Perhaps, some one mistyped the name they were sending gold to. You could contact them, and ask them about it, and if they did make a mistake typing, you would be an angel to return their gold. =)

If that’s not the case, then I guess contacting Support would be the next best thing.

They probably sent it to you by accident. Maybe they were typing one name and had a typo and got your name, for example. The email will also fill in names it thinks you want.

Return the gold. They probably didn’t even know who they sent it off to.

The account that send the gold had only 75 achievement points, which is what makes me think it was an account used for gold forwarding

Still, try contact the person. But that looks VERY suspicious! You should try and contact support aswell. Atleast i wouldnt take the gold before you are sure it is safe by Anet

I would leave the Gold in the mail as is (not returned and not accepted), and immediately contact the Anet Support Team. If this other account was indeed being used to funnel RMT Gold, your account runs the risk for a perma ban. It will appear that you were the one who made the transaction, and that is not good.

Let Anet tell you what to do with the mail. If they tell you to delete it, do so. If they say keep it, then it’s ok to keep.

Hi Mundo, as Gaile said, Kudo’s.

I also want to warn others bout accepting these kind of amounts of gold. Even if it is a mistake as with Mundu, accepting poses a big risk.
This is how RMT (real money trading) works:
a: the buyer finds an advert and goes to a website.
b: he buys gold and pays this with real world money
c: the seller sends you the gold in the game

This is against the user agreement and Arenanet does everything they can to stop this. However, the only thing they can see is step C. So in this situation, there is no way they can know it is a mistake by the goldseller and they might very well see you also a RMT-trader.

So you did the best thing by reporting this and making a ticket!!

I accidentally stumbled upon this thread and it made me a bit concerned. So if a person A wants to be a commander or needs money for some other reason and A’s friend/guildie called B has the money to help and WANTS to help, can this be incorrectly interpreted by ANet as an RMT transaction and lead to a ban? I know I’m a bit paranoid and also this is a different case than the one described in the thread, but since, as someone said, “the only thing they [ANet] can see is step C” which is “the seller sends you the gold in the game”, how can the mentioned friends/guildies prove themselves innocent?

It is a troublesome point, and GM’s has made the mistake several time to ban innocent people. Many times this is resolved rather quickly by a support ticket. in some rare case escalation was needed.

Important is to know what Arenanet is doing. All suspensions are made by humans (a GM). all high end transactions are flagged as suspicious. Those are investigated by a GM and the GM makes the decision to suspend or not. Those are skilled people who have a lot of experience in judging each transaction. They are however human beings and can make a mistake.

You can help as well. When transferring possible suspicious amounts of money it is important to communicate in the game. Arenanet can’t see whats happening in a room or on a VoIP-server (TS/vent/mumble/skype). So making your intentions clear in the game through chat AND/OR text in the mail helps a lot. Also, you should always transfer money to people you know. so having those people, you are sending money to or receiving money from, on your friends-list or being in the same guild helps a lot as well. The most important thing you can do to help off course is to never go into RMT yourself and report whenever you see it happening.

If you have prior interaction with the person sending you the gold, there’s nothing suspicious. What’s suspicious here is that the money is coming from a random account with very few achievement points, which indicates that the account is either very new, or not being used to play. An account that is simply very new wouldn’t normally have 105g, especially to loan out. You should only be concerned about this if you are involved in RMT.

Please do not speculate, and post as “fact,” your theories about how things work. That’s really not fair to anyone!

Suffice to say, we monitor what goes on in the game and take action on fraudulent and unacceptable activities, such as gold deliveries from an RMT. And occasionally — more rarely than the forums may lead you to believe — a mistake is made. However, errors are quickly set right with a ticket to the team. After all, we want you to play the game and we want to correct any errors that we make!

But yes, you can trade and go about your business! And know that if something odd does happen, we have agents on duty, 24/7/365, and if that should happen, we’ll get things sorted ASAP!

I definitely have faith in you and the support staff, but it does concern me that you admit that sometimes innocent transfers get flagged. I am constantly shuttling gold to my wife via mail, 5g here, 15g there. I make she spends, it’s been working for us for 25 years! With me doing this frequently and unidirectionally, am I in increased danger of being accidentally flagged as an rmt?

Support will never tell you which amount of money gets you flagged cause that would help the RMT’s. There is nothing wrong bout being flagged as an RMT. The problem arises if you get suspended. As Gaile said that is very rare, but whenever there are humans involved, errors happen. Are you yourself perfect?? do you never make mistakes?

The worst thing that can happen is that you can’t play the game for several hours. If that is so troublesome for you, you should find professional help.

Well (and I’m not posting this as “fact”, Gaile) if you’ve been constantly sending gold to one other account that’s most likely registered at the same address and possibly even registered to someone with the same surname then I wouldn’t worry I’m sure that kind of pattern will be recognised as being legitimate both by automated systems and by real people.

No, you’re fine, assuming you actually play with and/or talk to your wife, and aren’t also sending gold to a bunch of random people.

I’ve had this happen before. I got random gold in the mail. I thought about reporting it, but instead messaged them back asking about it. Apparently my name was “Sahdi” and their friends name was “Sahde” and he misspelled. So I returned it.

Same thing happened with a bunch of cookies to another character of mine. I think it’s pretty common. I’d like to see them add the ability to “autofill” people who are in your friends list. Or have a dropdown with you rfriends in it so you can select them. Since mistakes like this are so easy to make and rely heavily on the persons honesty.

well Gaile I want to say something because in my guild we help each other with legendaries and about 3 weeks ago a guildy forwarded me the last 300g i needed to buy dusk (was 702g at the time I bought it) and I don’t want us getting looked at with suspision just saying as I have send gold and high value materials such as lodestones to guildiesbut yea most of us are 5.5k – 11k ap i’m only a lil more than 6k atm

Edit: i just wanted to say something I mean we are all still here but I’d hate for down the road me or they or some of the others get banned because we pull together to finish them as a guildie has main guardian but he fell off to war and has gone back to guard I’m helping him finish jugg for guard and he will send me predator when we finish it too.

They monitor those kind of transactions, they do not take action against that kind of transactions. it can happen a GM makes a mistake and in those situations it is quickly resolved when people file a support ticket. You can help the GM reviewing high level transactions by communicating ingame.

Yeah, I don’t expect them to be perfect, and I didn’t expect Gaile to give me a detailed account on how they flag accounts, I just have a genuine concern because the gold always travels one way. As one helpful poster replied (not verbatim) “when they see the same surnames they’ll probably realize it’s legit”.

As for your last paragraph… ouch??? I hope it wasn’t meant as a dig, but it seemed quite harsh when I read it.

On the bright side, if you were to just accept the gold and they ban you, you could use the legal system to your advantage. It is illegal to block someone out of their purchased products in most countries/states and if someone sends out gold by mistake it in no way means you broke the EULA. Oh how I would love it to have been me! Here the fine starts at 5000$ for locking someone out of a purchased product.

Unfortunally thats is incorrect info. US law applies here cause you need to start a trial in the US to try and enforce this (or maybe the country where NCSoft is). There has been no US high court ruling bout this. There has been some single case trials where in specific cases the judge rules that where an user agreement was claiming that the sale was a license to use a service(and so the license could be withdrawn), and the judge declared that it was actually a sold product. There has been no court ruling bout a paid product and free to use service connected to that product. The unique business model that Arenanet uses makes that only a direct trial against Arenanet (or maybe NCsoft) can result in a legal precedent. In many cases this (if you find a us court willing to shred the user agreement) will just results in a change of the user agreement making it the same actual way with a detour.

Bottom line is that Arenanet support is very good and helpfull and in my personal opinion has a very fair way of ruling. But the user agreement is much tighter then the standards support is using and it is almost impossible to claim any money when your account gets terminated (besides unused gems you paid for and recent purchases you paid for but hasnt had a change to actually use it).

They do monitor things like this and they do take action against it. My experience isn’t with random gold but a gift sent to me by a friend. This past weekend, my account received a permanent ban for accepting items from the mail. The reason given was that I paid real world money for these items. My b-day was this past weekend and my friend wanted to give me something in-game as a gift. So they sent their gift through the mail. My account was banned within 4 hours of accepting this gift. I filed a ticket right away. Support responded within 3 days and luckily after reviewing my ticket the ban on my account was lifted.

I just want to caution people that things like this do happen, so be careful on using the mail system to trade items/gold. And if you fall into a situation like I did, contact support as soon as possible to get it resolved quickly.
