Hi, title says everything. I’ve tried updating my drivers but it seems to have no affect. Any ideas?

This happens every few minutes for a few seconds

This didn’t happen before, it just started recently (last few weeks or so) when I decided to reformat my computer.

Thanks.

Download CPU-Z, GPU-Z, and CoreTemp.

Load up GPU-Z – Monitoring Tab
Load up CPU-Z – CPU tab
And just open CoreTemp

Load GW2 with Windowed Fullscreen Mode

open your Settings in game so you can see the reported FPS, now watch the status windows of GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and CoreTemp and tell me what you see when the FPS drops.

I am looking for Clock Multiplier and Core Voltage reported in CPU-Z, Core/memory speed and Utilization in GPU-Z, and reported utilization per Core in CoreTemp…as well as the Max reported CPU Temp.

Is core VID in CPU-Z the same as core voltage reported?

In GPU-Z there isnt a monitoring tab, theres Graphics Card, Sensors and Validation tabs, I can’t find Core / memory speed or utilisation in GPU-Z.

In CoreTemp is the utilization per Core the “Load”? And is Max reported CPU Temp the Core #0 and Core #1 temperatures?

GPU-Z Sensor tab

vCore is the same as cpu voltage.

Utilization per core, is load per core.
Max temp reported is the chip itself.

During the spikes, the Core #0 and #1 seems to decrease in temperature from over 90 degrees to 70s. The load goes up from around 60% to 80-97%. I’ll let you know about the rest tomorrow, going to sleep.

The Max temp of your i5-2450M is 100C

you are pushing 90c

that is probably why your having FPS issues, your CPU gets throttled to reduce the Temps down to 70c’s.

You need to clean out your laptops Ducts and vents.

its a start, but your GPU Core/mem and temps would be good too.

If your dad is going to help, you might want to consider buying some IC Diamond7 Thermal paste and re-applying the TIM under the GPU/CPU and clean off the contact services. You might need to break the laptop down to that level to clear the Heatpipe’s Vents anyway, so might as well.

There is minimal risk in tearing into your laptop. Just get a dis-assembly manual from your manufacturer (PDF) and use a NON-magnetized screw driver.

and work on either a wood or glass surface.

I tear into my laptop 1-2 times a year. Infact I am upgrading my DV6z-6c00 from an AMD based CPU to an Intel based CPU (waiting for the new motherboard to arrive..should be here today). Going from a AMD A8-3510MX+HD7690M graphics to a i7-2630QM+HD6770 Graphics, Just needed a motherboard replacement. Upgrade only costs 180bucks :-) Far cheaper then spending another 1200 on a laptop.

To fix what’s causing it to run that high probably requires you to break it down to that level if you don’t want to leave it a work in progress. Keep yourself grounded, do it somewhere where there’s not much dust around and don’t use force. If you don’t start throwing the parts around or stabbing the CPU die you should be pretty far away from damage. The parts are actually sturdier than you probably think: I’ve heard of a guy throwing his CPU chip to a wall and it would still work perfectly after (Please don’t push your luck and try this though )

More parameters: Core VID seems to drop from 1.1V to 0.7V when the spikes happen, also the GPU core and memory clock don’t seem to change during the spikes, they are around 500 MHz and 750 Mhz respectively. Clock multiplier seems to drop from x29 to x7 or so during the spikes. GPU temp is 82c and doesn’t seem to change during the spikes.

That pretty much settles it. CPU is causing this, it throttles down, cut’s on the max usage, clock speed and voltage too. Cleaning insides of the laptop should help tons, but if the TIM has dried up there’s no other way than replacing it.

It stands for Thermal Interface Material, the paste that’s between your CPU and it’s cooler. It’s the stuff that transfers the heat away from the CPU. No matter what kind of cooler you have or how good airflow is inside, if it can’t get the heat pushed to the cooler it wont cool down. As squish said, IC Diamond 7 is a solid option.

I have a similar problem. When I am in the zerg I get reasonable fps (be it a WvW or the new LA events) , but after a while my fps sudenly drop to like 5 – 8 for a minute or two and after that goes back to normal. I am not sure what to do… my laptop is still on warranty so I don’t really want to open it.

Do the things suggested in this thread. If you find it lowering the CPU temperature, voltage, clock speed and usage during spikes you can RMA it due to overheating.

EDIT: if I understood correctly, the OP gets spikes lasting a couple of seconds every few minutes, but you get spikes lasting few minutes? How often do these occur? It could be entirely different issue but diagnosing is started the same way. You should start your own thread so these issues don’t get mixed up.

Btw squish, what’s your take on liquid metals like CLU on laptops? I’ve heard it works wonders under IHS and can bring problems above it but to my understanding laptop CPU’s don’t have IHS?

This entirely depends on ones skill to not ‘over spread’ the Metallic TIMs on laptops.

If you over spread, it will cause issues since there is less surface area on the CPU’s Die/Shielding for Laptops.

I for one only use synthetic materials in laptops, unless I KNOW I plan on overclocking the cpu (if you even can…you know most laptops dont allow for it).

But on my laptop, when it had the APU…now its Intel, I ran AS+ since I overclock the 1.8Ghz chip to 3.2Ghz when playing GW2 for WvW. You need Metallic materials to keep the Head dissipation up.

Using IC Diamond7, with my Air Flow mods below the CPU’s Fan (Drilled Holes into the laptop) under 89% load in WvW my Thermals on the CPU were 76c-81c (my laptop Throttles at 83c.

Using Arctic Silver+, my thermals on the CPU were 71c-74c.

Mind you that’s pushing the A8-3510MX from 1.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz using K10Stat.

Today my RMA replacement for the DOA Intel Mother board gets here. And my laptop is going to have an i7-2630QM instead of the A8-3510MX. I have to rerun my thermal testing, and I am not sure i will run AS+ since there isn’t a way to overclock the Intel (Multipler Locked, and BIOS is basic). But to give more data on this subject, Ill test with both TIM’s again with the Intel.

Fair enough, I was under the assumption that CLU dries up very quickly if it’s used on top of the IHS on desktop CPU’s, maybe that goes in hand with the skill not to over spread or laptop’s bare dies are just different.

Sure, I’d like to know the result of that test also.

It does dry up, for both Laptop and Desktops, however it does not dry up in 1-2 days. Takes a couple weeks.

Metallic compounds that are over spread will ‘liquify’ and have potential to Spill. And if you have ever seen a Laptop CPU there are transistors and Diodes exposed very close to the CPU die. If the Metallic Compound gets exposed to those components you can end up with a dead CPU or a very badly damaged System (if the CPU were to short out).

And since a laptop is moved around a lot (tipped and flipped to be held like a book), that increases chances that the metallic compound to spill while its still ‘wet’.

OK got my MB in and thermals are all tested with the i7-2630QM.

Diamond IC7 , Idle 32C, Full load (Prime95 for 30mins) 62C
Arctic Silver , Idle 29C, Full Load (Prime95 for 30mins) 60C\

Not much in the different under load, but idle temps are lower with AS. Though this is with default clocks, as I’m unaware of a way to Overclock Sandy bridge Laptop CPUs.

Laptop is all reassembled with the new MB, i7-2630QM+HD6770 @1080P 65FPS with out any over clocking on high quality settings. My currently tested lows are 23FPS during the LA event with 30~ players in the area. So perfectly acceptable for a motherboard from 2012, with a total upgrade cost of 189 with shipping :-)

yes, I would replace the Thermal Paste.

Also what Laptop do you have? If its an HP, you should have a utility called CoolSense. You would want to set that on ‘Coolest’ mode so that the fan runs at a higher RPM.

GPU is around 70-75 degrees celsius in furmark, the temperature doesn’t seem to change in lagg spikes.

My i7-2630QM runs at 73c’s under full load, and my HD6770 runs at 71C’s under load while the CPU is also under load.

Sorry to say, anything at or above 80c’s in ANY laptop is just not normal.

And considering that your CPU has a max TDP of 100C’s, if your at 90C’s you are seriously in the red zone and asking for a fried CPU.

Get into your laptop and replace that Thermal Paste!

The i7 3630QM doesn’t go higher than I think 46 and the GTX 670Mx in it doesn’t go higher than 60. Asus G75VX. Guild Wars 2 played.

even more reason for the OP to replace his thermal paste and do a really good cleaning of his laptop.

90c’s is just to much.

It might just be the way his laptop is designed. Asus G series gaming laptops are built for prolonged periods of gaming.

Not to mention looking at the design of the laptop chassis, it’s one of those silly gaming laptops with exhaust port out of the side for both GPU and CPU (very inefficient compared to now) Newer generations have the exhaust vents on the back, a lot of brands adopting seperate vents for GPU and CPU

considering the TDP death of intel i-series is 100c’s I highly doubt that. 90c’s is VERY close to that 100TDP limit.

Oh if we’re talking CPU temps then yes OP should get that looked at. It shouldn’t be going higher than even 60. Especially in one of those machines.

yea his root issue is that the CPU is going to 90c’s getting throttled then dropping to 73c’s and cycling back to 90c’s.

That is also driving up his GPU’s temp.

The CPU cycling like that is going to eventually just ruin is laptop and require a motherboard replacement.

But if he wants to just let it go, thats on him. I sure as hell wouldnt :-)

I’m not sure how to replace the thermal paste and I still have warranty on the laptop so I wouldn’t like to tear into my laptop at the moment. Is there any other suggestions?

I’m noticing the lagg spikes happening in league of legends as well.

If you still have a warranty on it, use said warranty if you so choose or get it serviced by a licensed professional.

I’ve decided im getting a professional to clean my laptop / do the thermal paste here is what I sent to them:

Hi, I’m looking for service of cleaning of my laptop’s ducts and vents and reapplication of the thermal paste under my GPU / CPU. Is this doable / how much would it cost?

Is it only the ducts and vents that need cleaning, or do I need to clean other parts of the laptop? I already vacuumed the laptop from the outside to get rid of dust, is this enough, or should I get the technician to clean it too?
