Dear Gw2 Mac Beta Client team,

Thanks for several months of fun. I purchased GW2 as soon as I saw there was a Beta client of OSX. After downloading, I was a little sadden to find it simply a cider port, as I wanted to avoid purchasing the Windows version and using WINE to get it to run. However, I suspected you’d have an easier and more successful time at getting it running than I, and for the most part you did (it is beta after all). Even with all your hard work and as fun as this game was to play, I’m bidding GW2 a fond farewell.

Sadly the game has become unplayable on my current hardware, 15-MBP Mid 2009 (8gb/9600MGT 512mb)…I know, I know… I shouldn’t be playing on a laptop, and it’s 3+ years old, and in computer years that’s like 100yrs old (honestly I’m surprised every time I turn it on and don’t see an Amber cursor blinking back at me).

Although, while my system should only be used as a doorstop by some folks standards, the game used to be playable. I could run through the Gendarran Fields slaying Centaur and Pirates with ease, warm myself by the heath at Kevach’s Homestead before rushing out into the snow and ice to bash the Sons of Svanir.

But recent events, which started with an infestation of Karka in Lions Arch, and the new troubling news of refugees and an onslot of Flame Legion & Dredge forcing folks from their homes, have made it impossible to continue playing. Now when racing into a large fight (with an ‘playable’ framerate and no lag to speek of) I’m presented with invisible combatants, and only the burst of magic or flaming arrows to direct me to the target. One can not effectively play the game like this.

I sincerely thank the team who brought GW2 to OSX, but the recent performance issues have made your hard work useless to me and likely others with similar hardware. I hope GW2 will continue to being successful so it’ll still be around (or GW3) once I get my hands on new top of the line mac hardware, or finally breakdown an build a Windows machine.

TL;DR Thanks GW2 Mac team, it was fun! If your mac is more than 1-1.5 years old, you may want to pass on this game or just stick to out of the way zones, forget large fights or WvW… unless you’re lucky (or patient), and if so I envy you.

PS: Yes, I’ve tried all the tricks to get the game running smooth again… unfortunately it has been for naught, and that really bums me out.

I am so sorry to read this, yet I can empathize with your situation. I cannot play the Mac Beta of GW2 due to poor performance, however I also run Windows 7 64 Pro on the same hardware and have a lot fewer problems using bootcamp on a Mac Pro tower, although large gathering of players for an event, aka zergs causes me problems that you describe.

Perhaps you should do what I am in the process of and that is building my own pc to play games on and yes I will be ‘transplanting’ Windows off my Mac to the newer pc.

Do keep hold of your copy of GW2, just in case things turn around for you.

Best of luck in any case.

The Arbriel Family and dynasty of characters have been around since inception in 2001.

Gw2 is always there for you, as long as you remember your log in.

What do you mean? When you’re trying to avoid buying the windows version?

When you buy the game, you are buying an account, you can download the client, as many time as you want, anytime on any computer as long as you remember your log in. Mac or Windows.

Now how would you feel if you were paying 15 dollars a month for it? Sorry to hear you go. But I have tweeked my graphics settings and i can get a decent 30 fps sometimes in most areas. Hopefully it works out.

Sadly, I believe the issue the OP was having was culling (I get that too at times, mostly WvW, cities, and large scale events), but the team recently posted about the end of culling coming the 26th of March. Maybe give it one more go!
