Can you add a way to disable these random SMS verification reminders when logging in instead of just “remember later”? It is getting really annoying to get this all the time if you have 30 accounts.

Also please lessen the flood control on your login servers. After logging in 23-24 times it takes significantly longer to login. Please make this at least 30. It also takes several hours to go back to normal login times.

Do you not use email authentication? I think it only asks you if you’re not using any of the three authentication methods (email authentication being the most basic and should be enabled for any account with a verified email).

You can use the -nopatchui, -email and -password options to login directly to the game if you want, or use a program to manage it.

Doesn’t checking “remember this computer” (really ip) keeps it from happening?

Nope, I have e-mail authentication and it still bugs me continually. A little bit to intrusive.

No, sadly the SMS verification reminder only has the options “remind me later” and adding the SMS verification now

Did you attach an authenticator and remove it?

I’ve only ever had email authentication and haven’t seen the message. Unless they’re slowly rolling it out to all accounts, there must be reason for it.

You could just attach an authenticator to make it go away.

The OP would have an issue. His 30 accounts would have some fun setting that up. But they could get the google authenticator app on the computer, that would help. I’m guessing Anet might be doing away with email authentication, due to all the accounts that get hacked and their emails also getting hacked. But that’s a might.

You can associate several accounts with one phone number, and it is quite easy to set up authenticator, and then remove it. Merely enter the code twice.

You might consider spending the time to add and remove it, if the one click bothers you so.

Good luck.

Already tried adding and removing it. As soon as you remove it again, the reminders come back. And no I dont want the authentificator at all. I feel like my computer is save enough to be unable to steal my passwords without unreasonable amounts of effort.
In my whole gaming “career” I never have been “hacked” and I am confident that it will stay that way.

Or Anet could add “Activate Now”, “Remind Me Later”, and “NO THANK YOU.”

THIS!

I do actually not use a mobile, for the simple reason i don’t need it in my life. So having to press remind me later for something that will NEVER happen anyway is kind of anyong. Please add a option to No thank you so i dont have to make three jumps just to log in.

I have never permitted anything – ever – to use authentication via my phone, simply because I hate the idea of all the spam texts that I’ll get.

I will never use SMS authentication for Guild Wars 2, and the nag screen is annoying. Please allow us to check “Don’t show again.”

An answer on whether or not SMS authentication will be required at some point in the future would be appreciated, as it will affect whether or not I purchase HoT.

Thank you.

Also is SMS is objectionable then how about the existing authenticator using WinAuth or Google Authenticator?

Unless Anet pays 1g per day for having this authentification activated I dont think it is worth the extra time it takes to log in. Even with WinAuth.

What extra time? I’ve used it exactly twice for the two locations I play the game/access the forum at. That’s it. Before you would get an email you needed to click on to get access from a new IP.

Once set-up, authentication, email or land-line or mobile or computer, doesn’t require you to do anything, unless you move IP addresses. So, what would ArenaNet be paying you for? Doing what you do everyday, anyway? No one forced you to buy 30 accounts and log into each one every day.

Some people have IPs that change every day + at every router reboot. Static IPs are somewhat rare in europe. I went through several ISPs so far and none of them offered a static IP without paying a premium.

And authenticators for GW2 learn the range of non-static IP addresses pretty quickly. It’s not the first time that’s ever been addressed.

Does not change anything about me not being interested in this additional security offer.
By the way learning adress ranges is a security risk, because over time it will white list all IPs from your ISP and if it is a large ISP it includes a lot of people

You have 2 choices, either use one, or don’t. If you want the message to go away, use one. If you don’t, deal with the messages. Anet wants people to have secure accounts, because it costs them money when people are hacked. So either add one, or press the button. I really hope they don’t remove it and force people to pick one to secure their accounts. It’s stupid to not protect yourself. The more people have authenticators, the less likely they will get hacked, thus helping keep the ticket numbers down.

I am already protecting myself with a strong randomly generated passwords. Different for each account and email. And I dont care if a ticket costs them money if against all odds something happens anyway, after all I give them money buy buying plenty of accounts and gems. They just cant expect us to keep paying for everything and only give us automated services in return

This answer is like Hello rainbow to me and does not make any sense what so ever. Noone is asking a-net to remove the security option, i my self belive it is good offer. What i do ask is a option to untick that i do not have a mobile and there for can not use this service and wont have to deal with the message.

This option do not change anything except that the people not having a mobile or don’t want to use the offer, can now do the two steps it took before to log in, instead of 3. Imo i should not have to tick remind me later when i don’t even own a mobile.

Just an FYI. You don’t need a mobile phone to use SMS (or use one of the other authentication options that don’t require a mobile phone, such as WinAuth); it will happily send a voice message to your landline. I imagine you can also enable and then disable it, to remove the prompt until ArenaNet addresses the issue, should they decide to do so.

Good luck.

Using WinAuth basically removes all the advantage you gain from SMS authentification again. If you get keylogged they might as well copy your winauth ini files and then have all the information required to generate the number for your account.

Then, I suppose, a landline SMS option would be the way to go, if one has no mobile phone. =)

If someone is capable of physically accessing your device/computer or running a program, it doesn’t really matter which option you choose, they’re all vulnerable. Attacking your mobile device may even be easier, if you bring it out in public.

For the average user however, using something other than WinAuth would be more secure than it. You’re likely not going to be a victim of a real time attack, but rather a wide net attack simply looking for data to sell. Since WinAuth is well known, it would likely be targeted whereas something else might not be.

Exactly, this method only helps if you are naive and fall for every phising attempt people try. As soon as it gets more sophisticated it would not help much. But considering the amount of effort involved I doubt anyone would do that to gain access to a single GW2 account, so I might as well stay with my email verification on my main account + no verification on my alt accounts.

I have neither a landline nor a mobile phone. Not in my name. I have never had a phone in my name in my life and I’m in my 50s. I am not about to go and get either one just to play a video game.

If ANEt is concerned about the customer service costs in recovering hacked accounts perhaps they could offer another option at log in: “Confirm You Take Full Responsibility For Account Security”. Clicking that would flag your account as unrecoverable by customer service under any circumstances. That would solve their problem and that of those of us who don’t want to use the extra security they are trying to persuade us to take.

Got the SMS notification for the first time today and was suprised: Anet earlier informed us that ‘veteran players’ (because they are known to Anet) don’t need to use this. Anyway, please add a a way to discart this option instead of the ‘later’ button. I don’t do it. Not for a game, not for Facebook or any other online platform. And that’s my own responsibility.
