Q:

I recently got a 3D television and have hooked my computer up to it. When I try to enable stereoscopic rendering for 3D it is simply grayed out. I have the resolution set to 1900 × 1080. Also I do have a graphics card capable of 3D as well as 3D HDMI cables. Anyone able to help me out?

Sure.

There are a few ‘hoops’ that you need to jump through to get 3D running on your setup. (depending on the setup)

Since the ‘render in 3D’ option is greyed out, it sounds like GW2 is not recognizing the 3D capability of your hardware. This is not unheard of if your using the “tridef” drivers to enable 3D. (my 3D laptop has this ‘issue’ as well) You still will be able to ‘mostly’ play in 3D – if you use a 3D centric resolution in GW2 (IE:1280×720 or 1920×1080) however there are many in game elements that won’t render with the proper depth since the ‘render in 3D’ option will remain unavailable. There is no fix for the Tridef drivers that I know of at this time.

Assuming that your using a Nvidia graphics card – you’ll need to:

1. Purchase a 3Dplay license from Nvidia

Nvidia’s 3D vision is somewhat only intended to work with 120Hz monitors and their “3D kit” (emitter and glasses). If you want to have 3D goodness spewed out the HDMI port on your graphic card you’ll need to buy a 3Dplay license to enable it to work.

2. Successfully run the 3DVision setup program

Within your Nvidia Control panel there’s a “Setup Stereoscopic 3D” option. You’ll need to successfully run this setup program to be able to enable stereoscopic 3D. The key term here is “successfully”. Even if your 3DTV is “officially supported” (or not) the 3D Vision driver may not properly recognize it as such and you may need to instal an “EDID overide” to be able to get it working.

3. Google “EDID Override” and update your 3DTV’s ‘driver’ via the Windows device manager to use the file you downloaded. Once installed, reboot and rerun the Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D setup utility.

IF everything went well the setup utility will close with asking you if you want to set your desktop to a 3D resolution (I don’t suggest it) and if you wish to have some 3DVision specific shortcuts added to your desktop.

(If the setup utility does NOT offer those options, stereoscopic 3D is not setup on your system and you will not be able to game in stereoscopic 3D)

4. Lastly, you’ll need to startup GW2 and pick a 3D resolution that your TV supports. Most common are 1280×720 and 1920×1080.

I hope this helped.

As far as I know there only one HDTV line that supported by nvidia 3dvison. Next step would be the edit override like the above poster. I did this on my passive 3D monitors and I use 3dvision with them

That used to be the case however a recent look at the ‘officially supported’ list has models from Samsung, LG and Panasonic (to name a few off the top of my head).

While my TV is now officially supported I still have to use the EDID overide.

My LG 5600 works great with nVidia stereoscopic drivers, as does my Sony HX800. Both are limited to 1280×720, though.

I found DDD (Tridef 3D) and it lets me do 1920×1080 over-under (never use SBS when you have this option!).. BUT, as stated elsewhere, the lack of the stereoscopic checkbox leaves me with a few messed up elements, such as shadows and name tags.

So, I think the goal is to find a command line “force on” for that switch (or registry, or whatever)…

Support team? Is this hidden somewhere?

Yes, I have an Oculus VR too, smarty pants, but it is still only 1280×800 and designed for 1st person usage, not 3rd….
