Strange Ringing Sound When Fighting
This happen to me too, i had to restart the game.
I’ve had this exact same issue, twice now since headstart. I too came to the conclusion it was the game causing it after I closed everything down but the game and it was still present, I didnt want to log out as I was in WvWvW and knew I wouldnt get back in for another three hours lol.
I finally closed the game out after trying to disable sound and re enable and mess with different settings, it only stopped after restarting the game.
Just figured it would be nice to know it wasnt only you with the same issue =)
Dark Covenant (SBI)
Had the exact same thing happen to me. I’ve had it happen three times so far, but the last time Guild Wars 2 didn’t crash like the first two. It has always happened on the same fight for me also. It happened on on the Jormag fight. Two of the times I had Steam voice chat open so that might have something to cause the crashing. I can’t remember if I had Steam voice chat open the first time also.
This happens to me too, though so far only in WvW, and so far it seems to happen when I get hit by a catapult or trebuchet shot, though only infrequently. It is as if some component of the client with regards to sound gets overloaded during extremely loud moments and just dies, leaving me with pulsating tone in my left ear. I do not use any other sound related software, such as Pandora or voice chat, while playing, so I doubt that it is the problem. Simply logging out and back in has always fixed it so far.

Same here, both times I was fighting a dragon with dozens or hundreds of people. I have an on board Realtek sound card and a Creative Fatality headset. The game crashed the second time, but not the first, but I had to restart it for the sound to go away.
Same problem here, also with Realtek onboard sound. Seems to happen during large battles could be the game getting overwhelmed with so many sounds happening at once.
Hmm i see there is more people that have experienced this, i also did notice this once, but was gone after i did a restart of the game, and so far only happened once for me, as said here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/GW2-sound-issue-with-Creative-X-fi/first#post16169
Same thing. Ringing alarm sound replaces all sound in the game. It only happens in WvW for me, but that’s what I do mostly. Happens about 1 hour into WvW. I’ve looked at my pc sound settings and tried turning off loudness equalization, headphone virtualization, equalizer. I’ve looked at the sound settings in game and tried using lower quality sound, lower volume, higher latency for more stability. None of it prevents that ringing alarm sound crash.
I’m on Windows 7, my motherboard is an MSI P67A-GD55 with the Intel P67 chipset. This issue didn’t start until about 1 week ago. It did not happen during the BWE’s or stress tests, or the first few days of launch.
I have also had this problem. It only happens when I’m in a huge boss fight. (group event)
I tried disabling/enabling options for sound, I plugged a headset in, I changed some options in GW2, but nothing works. It’s definitely a problem inside GW2.
I have it too. It happened four times to me last night, once during the defend the Gates of Arah event, and the others during WvWvW.
Same thing has happen to me today and so far only in WvWvW after about 10 min of gameplay. 1st time system restarted/hang, 2nd time I have close the game just in case it does not restart/hang my system again.
Fingers crossed for fix.
Ringing sound happened a few times last week, no freezes of client.
Just happened to me again.
I think I’ve been getting it when there’s been quite a lot of things going on at once. Like a boss fight with heaps of particle effects or WvW. But I think it’s also just happened randomly too when there hasn’t been much going on.. but still something.
Hard to pin point but I think it’s to do with many different sounds at once and the sound drivers crash and go into like a ringing alarm mode. Quitting the game automatically stops it and then you can log back in fine.
I’m going to try updating all of my sound drivers and see how it goes. If it happens again, I’ll record it so we can verify it’s the same sound we’re all getting.
Had that happen 3x so far, for me when I’ve been in downed mode in large fights. Also have Realtek onboard sound with Creative Fatality headset lol. Had torelog and was fine after.
just happened to me too a few hours earlier. just as the event completion came up all sound ceased and an hallow alarm started to sound. it stayed even when i tabbed out of the game. had to shut the game down then it was fine.
any idea on the cause and updates?
Had it happen about 5 times now always during big wvwvw zergs. As others have said, I have to re-log the game to make it stop which is annoying due to the super long queue times.

Someone posted this in a similar sound bug thread, posting here til this all gets merged:
That about covers the issue.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
Can confirm this happens still, even turning down sound in-game does not remove it, and it plays even while tabbed out.
This is still happening as of today. Got it in WvW
still getting this during dragon boss fights…. anyone can confirm they are too? this hasn’t been fixed…. any work around besides restarting client?
This has also been happening to me on and off for the last 2 weeks. It’s always when there’s a big group of people fighing in PVE or WvW.
I’m not running any other programs that use sound in the background. Restarting is the only way to fix it. It is becoming more frequent in the past few days.
I would love a answer to what is going on. Of course it may be my computer. May be ALL our computers.
It’s still an issue as of today; it just happened to me in WvW during a big zerg-on-zerg siege.
It’s probably happened to me about a dozen times since getting the game at launch, and as far as I can remember has always been an issue. I’ve had the bug hit me while in WvW and in PvE, and every time was during very large battles.
I’m using Realtek onboard audio (from reading the above posts I’m beginning to think it’s an issue to do with Realtek/GW2 incompatibility) and it has happened on both my Logitech Z-2300 speakers and Plantronics GameCom 780 headset (I do not think speakers/headset are the issue).
I was not running Vent, TS or anything similar at the time of any of these bugs, and nor was I using Pandora though on occasion may have been running Grooveshark (but not at every instance of the bug). I experienced a complete crash-to-desktop around 50% of the time I experienced the sound bug, though my guess is that it would crash every time if I waited in-game long enough, but I would quit the game fast enough to avert the crash-out half of the time.

I’ve had the same issue twice now. I think it was the Jormag fight that started it too, but I didn’t have my headphones on during it, and only noticed it after sitting in LA for a while when I did put them on. I use a Razer Megalodon headset. Never heard it before yesterday..
Just happened to me for maybe the 5th or 6th time since beta. Big WvW fight.
Ringing sound starts, then eventually escalates to game freezing. Need to restart the game in order to fix it. Using the latest nvidia drivers.
