Stuck at 5 FPS on High End system
Yes I’ve seen many problems like this. Usually it’s related to your PCI-E Interface Link Speed or your Nvidia Drivers(win10+gw2+auto-installed nvidia drivers rarely go well)
PCI-E Link speed is the easiest to check, though. Download GPU-Z and start it up, then start up Gw2 and take a screen shot like This.
Post the screenshot here, you can ignore CPU-Z for the moment.
Important is that GPU-z shows @x16 .. if the number is lower reseating your
GPU helps most of the time.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Try disabling the “Windows Search” service, can cause 100% disk usage.
can use the follwing guide, or just google how to do it.

Did you update all your drivers not only the video card but the commenly forgotten motherboard chipset drivers?
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens
“I’ve looked at countless threads and worked with tech support for about a month and tried numerous things to resolve this with no results.”
So write what you already did & provide more than just you pc specs.
Otherwise you get random tips – unless that’s what you are aiming at.
Game is having EXTREME FPS drop since the last patch 2h ago!
Auric Basin is currently unplayable for me. I was usually running medium settings and had a “steady” 30fps except in huge fights.
Since the patch the game is running at 1-5fps in AuricBasin with the same settings. Putting EVERYTHING to OFF/LOW makes the game run at ~10fps .. WTF!?
Lion’s Arch fps is normal at ~30fps at medium settings!
I feel bad for you , but things like this are easy to fix ..
Don’t wait help from others , you’ve to do it yourself , start with installing fresh copy or alternative copy / dual system – if you run w7 then install 10 – install win then update it to max then run the game and see if problem still there , then you can try to upgrade bios of MB and Video card – if not you can take your case to the place you bought it from and they will try other hardware with your case .
Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
I did check my graphics card and it is indeed running @x16. I’m not at home so can’t post a screenshot but i did already confirm this.
@Sassy, i’ll list what I have tried so far.
1. Updated all video card drivers to the latest versions
2. Updated my mobo bios to the latest version
– Have not updated chipset drivers. Will try that.
3. Installed all the latest Windows updates
4. Turned off my AVG antivirus and ran the game.
5. Uninstalled AVG antivirus and ran the game.
6. Updated the firmware on my router and
7. Setup port forwaring rules on my router for Guild Wars 2
8. Created an Outbound Windows Firewall rule for Guild Wars 2
9. Disabled Windows Firewall
10. Disabled all background processes on Windows startup (excluding Windows services)
11. Adjusted NVIDIA Control Panel settings:
– Changed Power management mode to “Prefer maximum performance”
– Changed “Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration” to “Single display performance mode.”
– Changed “Vertical Sync” to “Use the 3D application settings.”
12. Ran a repair on the Guild Wars 2 installation
13. Deleted the .dat file and re-downloaded the entire game.
14. Cleaned up the registry with CCleaner
15. Added the -clientport 80 command to the end of the .exe and tried running the game.
Phew – definitly alot of things you already tried.
Can you provide:
HWMonitor Logs. => File -> Store Monitor data
Both with GW2 running at 5 fps & in Windows (as little other programs running as possible).
GPU-Z screenshots from GraphicsCard & Sensors Tab.
Again both with GW2 running at 5 fps & in Windows (as little other programs running as possible).
important: Do not minimize GW2 while taking the GW2 at 5fps logs/shots.
Open “ProcessExplorer” (www.sysinternals.com)
View ->Show Lower Pane. Lower Pane View -> DLL
Click on GW2 and name every non-Windows .dll that is used.
(highlighted as purple by default)
Name every driver version you have tested in step 1.
Did you use DDU (google /guru3d)?
Set step 10. please back to default if you didn’t yet.
Revert everything you broke with step 14. (System Restore Point)
Never mess with the registry unless you know what you are doing.
Do you have anything out of the ordinary?
2,3 Monitors; VR/3D glasses; “Fancy” mouse/keyboard drivers; reShade/SweetFX; etc.
Did you reinstall dx9runtimes?
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx%3Fid%3D35
And is it downloading anything if you try?
Can you replace your GTX970 with your old one in your new system?
If yes – please try that & and report back. (After the things mentioned above)
Also: Those 10-20fps you had under windows 7 weren’t right either. Your system is definitly able to run GW2 at 60fps+ except for mass events.
If you need help with any of these things – ask.
“I did check my graphics card and it is indeed running @x16. I’m not at home so can’t post a screenshot but i did already confirm this.”
Please post a GPUz screenshot when you get the chance.
Ignore everything. I am just another idiot. I mis-read my GPUz. Double checked it this evening and it was running at x1. Video card was in the second PCI-E slot. Moved it to the first (proper) slot and everything runs as it should.
Thanks for the help and for putting up with my idiocy.
Lol yeah they make it so that the first slot is 16x and the others are 8x or 4×.
MSI GTX 1080 Sea Hawk EK X 2xSLI 2025 / 11016 MHz, liquid cooling custom loop.
Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB. HTC Vive.
I will never understand how people can put GPU’s in the tiny x1 slots.
But i’m glad everything worked out for you.
