I’ve been playing GW2 for a year now, and it’s always run at a healthy frame rate of about 50 or more fps. Then in this past month, my fps dropped drastically to no more than 10 frames, sometimes even lower. My computer and graphics drivers are completely up to date, and changing the settings in game does nothing to fix the problem.

I have i7 running Windows 8.1, with a NVIDIA GEFORCE 840m, I should not be having these problems. None of my other games run this badly, just GW2.

What’s going on?

Be sure to do a complete reset every once in a while

Just today, I logged on as normal, it did a quick patch, I joined my Necro that I left in Lornars yesterday and… 15 fps. Pretty much framelocked. Stare into the sky, 15 fps. Stare into the ground, 15 fps. Teleport to another zone, fps was still down the drain. As a note, I have a GTX980Ti OC so its not that bad.

So…

- Delete GW2.dat (that big 20gb+ file in your GW2 folder)
- Delete the GW2 folder in appdata/roaming (this is where your settings and temp file is stored)

Launch the game and it download again… Better set aside some time because its going to take a while. Be sure to reconfigure to your normal settings, keybinds etc.

So just now when I logged back on, fixed my old settings, my fps went from 15fps to 60fps (frame locked at 60fps, I like it like that). Its not the first time this happens…

What? You shouldn’t have to do this unless you manage to corrupt your install.

“You” in this case being Anet. GW2 patching isnt flawless. It can still mess up, as evidenced by todays patch. This is a known fix that is often brought up on this forum, its nothing magical I just came up with. Resetting it can fix a whole slew of odd errors.

Its possible that only deleting the temp dat and settings work too, but I prefer a full reset when I’m not limited by bandwitdh.

Dawdler, I have no idea how to find these files. The only gw2 folder I know of is the one where my screenshots are saved. I’m very interested in trying your method, so if you could give me a step by step, I’d really appreciate it.

Have you checked also if your CPU runs at max speed ?

Have you installed any NVidia crap beside the drivers, like RVGA Precision, 3D Vision,
Experience or whatever else there exists ? If so also remove all that stuff and look
if that helps.

For the finding the local.dat, press Start → run and enter %appdata%
or set your explorer to show hidden files and directory, then you should
see appdata under your user directory.

You qualify for a free Windows 10 upgrade. Windows 8 is the worst OS since Vista. With the exception of optimizations (DirectX 12 and H.265 readily come to mind) Windows 7 is far superior to 10 as far as ease of access and aesthetics go.

To answer your original question are you getting any updates? I can play Dark Souls at 8k resolution with playable framerates on singleplayer mode yet Guild Wars 2 is a slideshow so it might be on your ISP’s end or a bandwidth issue. If you’re limited to a certain data plan then that’ll limit you. I’d order at least a CAT 7 cable and with Pascal and Arctic Island cards being released in a few months you’ll trivially run things at 4k. Heck, I do so today even at Tequatl with most settings maxed except shadows and keep reflections off and use native sampling.

That right there is 10% a matter of opinion. I couldn’t stand 10 and ended up going back to 8.1. Of 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, 8 is still the best by a mile imo.

Eight had no start button while it introduced the lazily designed Metro interface. I should have gone for UI design. Had I known I could have a six figure income by basically doing nothing (Metro adds absolutely nothing and is a big step backward) but “designing” (that word has too much dignity to use seriously here) something with an overly flat and simplistic pre-alpha looking color scheme (no gradients or shadows, seriously?) I’d take it.

If a waiter or waitress were that lazy I’d complain to their manager. If a cook were that lazy with chicken they’d risk giving careless people salmonella.

No I don’t have any extra nvidia stuff except for the updated drivers. My internet plan has not been changed, and I can’t afford to change graphics cards. I’ll try fixing those files that were mentioned, but this issue is driving me up the walls.

Since you still refuse to post a picture here like i requested and don’t say
anything about your CPU speed and temperature i thing i’m out since
that leads to nowhere.

I fail to understand what sort of picture it is you want, and I am not very computer savvy, so I have no idea how to check CPU speed or exact temperature. My computer does not run hot when I run GW2, if that’s what you’re asking.

I’m trying my best to understand all these instructions, and to be honest, I am very much confused. Forgive me if I’m a bit on the dumb side.

Update: I couldn’t figure out the appdata thing so I just uninstalled and reinstalled my game. Already that bumped me up to between 20-30fps in a high traffic map like LA, which is so much better than 8 fps. It’s not 60fps like my character select screen runs, but at least the game is playable now.

Eight had no start button while it introduced the lazily designed Metro interface.

Who cares if there was no start button? Clicking the bottom left of the screen had literally the exact same functionality as the start button without taking up the space. And Metro is honestly great, much quicker then the standard start menu. I hated it when I got it but after switching back to my laptop’s Win7 install I realized just how much better Metro is.

I should have gone for UI design. Had I known I could have a six figure income by basically doing nothing (Metro adds absolutely nothing and is a big step backward) but “designing” (that word has too much dignity to use seriously here) something with an overly flat and simplistic pre-alpha looking color scheme (no gradients or shadows, seriously?) It sounds like you’re hating it just for the sake of hating it at this point.
