Since i was hacked few days ago and from what i saw a lot of ppl were hacked too even when taking all the security measures given from arenanet in their topic about account security. I think it will be better if they put for example a code which u can add on every character u have. What I mean is something like the codes in Lineage 2. In order to log in with your character u have to enter a code (possible with mouse clicks only) as u get the number positions random. With this even if they take ur password or email and hack your acc they will need this code to log ingame with ur character. Even if u do have keylogger it wont help them here cuz it’s a mouse entering. As of the random number generator – example : 1 4 5 and the next time: 8 1 5

U can add (Del) and (cancel) next to the last number .

You may have missed it but this was already suggested in Account Issues, and given a Dev response indicating it would not be well-received.

More crap just to be able to use my characters is bordering on the absurd. I left the last 3 games I played because of that crap. If your account has been breached, you sweep your computer with AV software, or if you dont trust such software like I dont, wipe out the harddrive. Then you change the password of your email in guild wars. Then you change both the password to your guild wars account to something harder to break, and change the associated email to a brand new and unused email.

It’ll take you 2-3 secs to add the code before entering the world with your character. If u think 2-3 secs will make your life harder.. well then ok it’s a deal breaker lol. If u get hacked taking all the security measures possible and given as advice from arenanet why is this a bad thing. U will wipe ur harddrive the first time get ur items restored but when this happen again the difference will be that u no longer have the option to restore ur items. U can wipe ur harddrive as many times as u want everything u worked and paid for will be gone. Spending those 2-3 seconds on that code can save u money and definetely it’s less than the time u’ll have to wait till u wipe ur pc and get ur acc restored with nothing in it. I’m not saying to have codes on every bank every purchase lol just on character log in.
The more security the better. Lot of accounts are used in gold selling . This will reduce as the gold sellers as the hackers. Imagine the gold they take from every acc and sell. This is as ingame economy factor as real life economy factor. People spend money on hackers instead supporting the game. IF hacked accs go down as numbers the gold sellers will increase their price, they will become much less.

On the surface, your idea has some merit, but it will really do nothing except cause even more CS issues. Since there WILL be people that forget their secret code numbers, ArenaNet will have to design and implement a method for resetting those numbers just like resetting the password. So if a reset method is available, this sort of “add on” security is useless. The only way it would work is if ArenaNet stated that under NO circumstance would they reset those PIN numbers and if you forget one, the character is forever locked and lost to you. Can you hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would cause?

ArenaNet has to make the assumption that incoming requests from the email of record (your account name) are coming from the owner of the email and the GW2 account. So all the thieves would have to do is request a reset of the secret code numbers (just like they request password changes) via that email and they are past your “block”. All you really do is create one more thing that has to be overcome to get your account back.

The problem is user email security. I would imagine that vast majority of the GW2 accounts that were stolen were stolen via a compromised email account. Gaile has already posted that in almost all cases of GW2 account breaches, the user’s email account was also take over. So a better solution would be to come up with methods to ensure that user email accounts are more secure.
