I would suggest to remove (uninstall) the program and install either the following:

Avira: http://www.avira.com/en/index
Avast: http://www.avast.com/en-au/index

AVG at it’s current state is bloated and has features that are not quite needed and is intrusive or hinders an individuals use of everyday computing.

Avira and Avast use less resources.

I’ve used Avira for years along with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware pro and never had any problems with them having an effect on performance. Good AV in my opinion.
