I, too, am having this issue. MacBook Pro Retina.
Has anyone tried re-installing? That’s what I am trying now, but the 17GB takes forrreeeevvvveeerrrr
I tried that…now I get crashes every 10-20 minutesand the tgUpdate and gem store issues aren’t fixed. I saw a post on reddit where someone said the same thing (crashes, but only after re-installing). It looks like re-installing might make things even worse.
Zuzz, try opening Activity monitor and Force quit Guild wars from there. Also, cookied and c-something server. That helped me be able to launch the game after getting the nothing that you got.
So I fixed the issue for myself by installing 10.7 into a virtual machine and installing Guild Wars 2 from scratch on the virtual machine. It only lets you do the first patch due to the lack of a recognized graphics card but that is all you need. Copied it back over to the main OS and started again. No more TgUpdate 1.11. So yeah, the devs need to figure out the 10.9 sandboxing or whatever is causing the patcher to fail.
This fixes the gem store issue too. Perhaps we should find a way to distribute this patched Guild Wars 2.app file (minus the data file so it isn’t insanely huge).
(edited by Nageth.5648)
@Arion Starke:
It sounds like the tgUpdate cannot find the Guild Wars 2 app. Do you have the game in the default /Applications folder or is it in another folder?
I have been able to fix this issue on my mac…at least the tgUpdate does not show up any longer. I had to work around the problem, which was to download the update manually through Safari, apply it and then re-launch the game client.
The URL for the patch is (yes this is a legitimate patch – i figured this out using EavesDrop application for Mac). If you have questions how, please reply to this message.
http://cider.ncplatform.net/Live/GWII-Update-009524.tgz
After downloading the patch, manually unpack it by double-clicking. You should find “GWII-Update-009524.app” after it finishes extracting. Open this app, and when asked point it to you GW2 client. If you are getting a message: “GWII-Update-009524.app” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”, you must allow third party apps in your System Preferences->Security & Privacy->“Allow apps downloaded from anywhere”
After the update is completed, try launching the game client.
If this still does not work, try the following:
1. Get a new copy of GW2 Mac Beta client from the GW2 website. Do not open it yet.
2. Move the GW2.dat file from your existing GW2 client (so you don’t have to re-download ~20GB file again). Right click (Control-Click) on the game client, choose “Show Package Contents”, then go to Contents→Resources→transgaming→c_drive→GW2. In this folder, find GW2.dat and move it to Desktop
3. Remove your old GW2 client, including the Guild Wars 2 folder in ~User/Library
4. Install the new GW2 mac beta client.
5. Apply the updater patch you had downloaded at the beginning of this post.
6. Launch the game.
7. When it starts downloading game files, close it.
8. Move the GW2.dat files back into the new GW2 mac beta client. Follow step 2, but this time you will be moving the file from Desktop to GW2 folder.
If it still does not work, reply to this post.
Good luck!
(edited by Felicja.6891)
Good job there. Much more trustworthy than having to distribute the patched client ourselves. Sucks we’ll have find this info out by listening in on network traffic from our computer. Oh, and I think you can get around the whole changing system preferences by right clicking (or control clicking) the app and selecting Open. This should give you a dialog box asking you if it should let it open and you should say okay. Saves you from having to edit your Security settings constantly.

I experience this too, sometimes it’s done in 10 seconds, but sometimes I have to wait 40 seconds to launch. Why is this?
Specs:
MacBook Pro
15-inch, early 2011
2,2 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Just wanted to let everyone know that doing the patch as suggested by Felicja.6891 worked to get rid of the TgUpdate message on my macbook pro.

Just wanted to let everyone know that doing the patch as suggested by Felicja.6891 worked to get rid of the TgUpdate message on my IMAC 3.4 GHz i7 with 32GB GTX 680 , OS X 10.9
Thanks again Filecja.6891
Now why hasn’t GW2 come out with a fix???, makes you wonder.
Just another thank you note for Felicja. Worked perfectly, very easy and comprehensive instructions. :-)

Thank you Felicja!!! Everything is fixed now
I was having three different issues:
1) tgUpdate 1.11 showing up every time I launched GW2
2) Incredibly slow first-time load of client, graphics, etc – tried blowing away local.dat as suggested elsewhere, which didn’t help at all
3) Unable to use Buy Gems or Redeem Code in BLTP
I followed Felicja’s instructions and now all three issues are fixed!!
Thank you Felicja. Worked like a charm. Brilliant!

I cant honestly thank you enough Felicja. The update by itself fixed the TgUpdate issue but not fixed the Gems Issue, so decided to follow all the steps and has resolved all 3 issues now. Great instructions. Thank you again
Glad to be of help and that it worked for you folks:)
Since we may run into this issue again in the future, here is how you can use Eavesdrop on Mac to find out where the tgUpdate is being downloaded from.
You can find Eavesdrop from http://www.baurhome.net/software/eavesdrop/index.html
1. Download the Eavesdrop from the above website (look for the Downloads section).
2. Open the app. It is a lot easier to figure out which site the GW2 is connecting to if you have as few applications open that use internet. So close any Mail, web-streaming music/videos if you have them open. Make sure that GW2 client is closed.
3. In the Eavesdrop app, click on the “Start Capture”. You will be prompted for an administrative password. This is normal.
4. Launch the GW2 client. As soon as you see the familiar tgUpdate window, let it download for a few seconds until the progress bar has moved a little, then cancel it.
5. Switch to the Eavesdrop app. You should start seeing some new entries in the main screen. Find the entry that has the most number of packets (see # column in the window). This is likely to be the GW2 client related traffic, but it may not if you were downloading other files in the background or streaming audio/video).
6. Double click on the entry with most packets. In the window that opens, look for both host information as well as the URL that is requested. It will be buried within bunch of other gibberish unfortunately.
Felicja, how nice of you to post and continue to help players with the valuable information that you have!
I am going to point our dev and CS teams to your post. The info you shared seems to have been very helpful for many players.
Many thanks!

Just talked to the QA lead and one of our guys was actively writing up some steps when I sent the e-mail askign about the above process. The steps he devises are similar to those outlined above by Felicja. He’s been working with the Mac specialists and his post may include a bit more info, but it’s along the same lines.
It’s soooo nice to know you guys are able to get back into the groove with the help of players and devs! <3

@Gail I second what mikeew.8607 said. Thanks for the warm fuzzies and all, but the fact that the player community beat ANet tech support/QA/dev resources to the solution – which is a user solution and not an ANet solution – is a pretty big fail on ANet’s part.
The game is beautiful and entertaining and money is money, whether it comes from a Windows computer or a Mac computer.
Toodles!

This is really downright bad business practices!! I just don’t have the words to explain how kitten lame this is.
Maybe I should point something out: Felicja posted at 2 this afternoon. Our QA person had already been in contact with the Mac specialist in preceding days and was gathering information and testing possible solutions prior to posting.
All credit to a player for providing what ended up being useful information! But please note that we can’t post quite as randomly, and the team began investigations of problem-solving steps prior to this afternoon. The team simply has been showing due diligence in testing the process and noting its applicability, effectiveness, and safety.
So hold your criticism, please, and consider the bigger picture. Saying “it took a player to solve the situation” isn’t neither accurate nor fair.
And because there seems to be a remarkable “jump on The Negative Bandwagon” mentality going on, let’s lock this thread until we have more information to provide.
From the QA team:
“We’ve determined the problem that is outlined in this thread (and a few others) is an issue connected with the TG Updater on Mavericks OS X. We’re currently working on a fix.
The Update can be manually patched by using the steps below:
1. Check current version # of TG Wrapper by navigating to Applications -> Guild Wars 2 -> Get Info
2. If the version is older than 1.0.009524, download TG Update. You can get the TG Update here: http://cider.ncplatform.net/Live/GWII-Update-009524.tgz.
3. After downloading, manually unpack the .TGZ file by double-clicking on it
4. Updater should now be unzipped and visible. Double-click updater and you will be prompted to select your output app
5. Navigate to where your Guild Wars 2 client is located. (default location is Applications -> Guild Wars 2)
6. After selecting Guild Wars 2 you may be prompted by your Mac to allow the update to make changes, if so enter your password and the updater should resume updating. Note: If you are getting a message: “GWII-Update-009524.app” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer". You must allow third party apps in your System Preferences->Security & Privacy->“Allow apps downloaded from anywhere”
7. Once patching has been completed confirm that TG Wrapper version has updated to Version 1.0.009524 by re-following step #1
8. After the update is completed try launching the game client
I believe that user’s work around (above) for the update should work pending the updater not working. I was able to update the TG Wrapper on our Mac with Mavericks from the old wrapper with just unzipping the updater and applying the update.
Here is an additional Work Around if the update does not work:
1. Get a new copy of GW2 Mac Beta client from the GW2 website. Do not open it yet.
2. Move the GW2.dat file from your existing GW2 client (so you don’t have to re-download ~20GB file again). Right click (Control-Click) on the game client, choose “Show Package Contents”, then go to Contents?Resources?transgaming?c_drive?GW2.
Follow step 2, but this time you will be moving the file from Desktop to GW2 folder."
Now, I’d like to add a few more thoughts:

I agree so perhaps we can open a dialog on how Anet plans to improve communication with Mac customers. We really would appreciate it.
For example with the gem store bug: “Post your specs” then days and day with not even a word saying that it is even being worked on.
We all know the Mac client comes with issues but at the same time as you have seen there are customers that want to give Anet money. A little bit okittennowledgment on a regular basis would go a long way. I’m not talking about some person that posts 2 days a month but someone that tells us where we stand on a regular basis. We should not have to ask in other forums to get attention.
That said, thanks for seeing my calls

I would also like to report that downloading and running to update has fixed:
1) Camera spinning issues
2) Accessing the “Buy Gems” function in the store
I think it has also increased the speed of loading assets like UI, map, etc.
I am quite pleased!
Downloading and running the update fixed the tgUpdate download issue for me. Did not solve the “unable to buy gems issue”. I have a late MacBook Pro 2012 w/ Retina running OS X 10.9.1. The specs are similar to others that have posted in this thread and the “unable to buy gems” thread. I’ll find that thread and update it as well as some users also reported their issue was fixed in that thread and it’s more applicable to the actual problem I’m currently having.
Sorry for the perceived negativity. I believe I was simply trying to express what JustTrogdor said in his last post, which quite nicely sums up what really is quite irritating about the issue.
@ Saarus, could you please try removing the Local.dat file from the
/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/p_drive/User/Application Data/Guild Wars 2
then retry..Sorry removing the Local.dat file will probably require that you re-enter your login information into the launcher.

I do think we try our hardest to be understanding (I mean, we’re mostly okay with this client being indefinitely cider as long as it works). But it becomes really easy to just assume the worst when we get no communication from the developers about the future and support tells us to repeatedly do ineffective things. The worst, of course, being that the mac beta support has stopped entirely and we’re sol (which hopefully hasn’t happened yet). It wouldn’t be the first time that a Mac version of a game is dropped off the face of the planet after Mac users have put money into the game. I think a lot of this negativity would go away if we were reassured about the future of the Mac client. Just removing the label beta would go a long way. Yes, this means you couldn’t really fudge on support by pointing to the beta label. But honestly, as Mac gamers we all know what to expect from Cider ports (they break and we have to do work arounds until they get fixed eventually). You wouldn’t be the first game company with a somewhat buggy Mac cider port (coughTheSims3cough).
So I strongly encourage you guys to throw Mac users a bone and help us to feel like we’re part of this community and have a place in it. But yeah, my last off topic post regarding this update bug.
(edited by Nageth.5648)
I agree with most above. My problem is not so much the lack of progression for the beta port (mostly because it runs quite fine for me). But it is the major LACK of communication on the mac forums. There are times that we get no answer from any Dev for like 4 months. I’ve put in several tickets around these times but get replies “We can post when we have something to say” But this is not the right attitude in my opinion. Just confirming that you’ve read it and are working on it is worth so much! You must see why players find it hard to believe that a fix is put forward about 6 hours after a player solved it.
If you were working on it you should’ve told us so. Better communication on the Mac sub forum will solve a lot of negative attitudes here.

the procedure doesn’t even take the time you needed to post this “helpful” comment
Followed all steps in the QA write-up again – which included blowing away ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2, and still cannot use gem store. The tgUpdate problem still goes away, which is a plus.
So my current state is, I did the reinstall, and patch, and the last thing I will try is removing the Local.dat file as you indicated (although I blew its parent directory tree away prior to reinstalling+patching GW2 beta client – don’t know if that counts) and see if that helps.
This worked, and by the way… purchasing gems worked for me today as well.

Hello,
Thank you for your patience in dealing with this issue. We have determined the problem is an issue connected with the TG Updater on Mavericks OS X and are currently working on a permanent fix for this issue.
In the meantime, the updater can be manually patched by using the steps below:
Check current version # of TG Wrapper by navigating to Applications -> Guild Wars 2 -> Get Info
If the version is older than 1.0.009524, download TG Update
After downloading, manually unpack the .TGZ file by double-clicking on it

Thank you! It’s a simple process. And it is not the be-all and end-all of solutions. As we said, we’ll continue to address the issues, but this is a work-around that may help you. And again, we are sorry that you are having issues, but please let’s focus on righting those issues and not writing a diatribe of complaints and gripes.
How do they expect us to find this update? I’d like to get a RED post to tell us this is where to get it from.
This worked, and by the way… purchasing gems worked for me today as well.
Thank you for reporting that, just as we thank the forum member above who stated he was not able to purchase gems, and who gave us some information to help us figure out why. Posts that contribute information or helpful suggestions are always welcome, and appreciated!

I am inquiring about how to get that update or patch right now. That should have been clearer, and I apologize, but we were working over night and I didn’t have access to everyone I needed to speak with to get that bit of info.
Thanks for your patience.
Thank you for working to get a temporary fix in place, that at lest gets us back on track with playing. I ran this fix today and from what little time I had it seems to have fixed the issue with the gem store, as I was able to redeem my cards, and see the purchase tab.
I would hope that as most people have said that communications with the Mac community in the future would improve. As I’m sure it is well known Mac uses can be some of your best customers and sales people, the down side is we can be a bit aggressive when we feel ignored.
I hope that the developers and the Mac community might build a working and communicating bridge between the us all so that we can have the best game experience possible, and the best relationship possible with ArenNet.
I look forward to the game no longer being in beta and being on the same page as the PC users who play.
I removed /Users/mmoch/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/p_drive/User/Application Data/Guild Wars 2, logged in, went to TP, hit Buy Gems and lo! I see an actual form there instead of just a brown box!
This is good. I am at work right now so I don’t really have the time to actually complete a purchase. I’ll give it a shot tonight and if it doesn’t work I’ll come back.
Happy Holidays!
it seems that Felicja’s method of acquiring the patch link is the best way to get the patch download. I followed his/her instructions and my gem store/camera issues have been resolved.

I can confirm that the solution proposed does work for me; Mavericks MBA, GW2 installed in “non standard” location. Thanks for solving!
I don’t understand the anger around the Mac client. I am happy enough with it that I have not loaded windows up to play this game in months. I know I lose some performance, but it’s actually not that noticeable.
That said, it would be good if someone in red simply put “issue under investigation by Mac client team, will try to give an update within X hours/days.” once more than a few people post to a thread saying something is broken. It would just help people like me know that I should check the thread later if the problem hasn’t gone away. Instead, I read a page of “ANet vitriol” before finding the solution. Had I given up after the first page I would had missed the answer…
