Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is unable to access its archive file Guild Wars 2\Local.dat. Please verify that this file is accessible and writeable, and that no other program is currently using it.

This is the error message I get when I try to start GW2. I can see the process for GW2 but the game never tries to start. I click it again and get this message.

Any suggestions please.

It’s causing problems. Delete it. (Seriously, it’s no big deal. Just REM it!)

You can’t delete it? You most likely won’t be able to, since it is most likely locked.

An old instance is still running, thus the file is locked. Run “taskkill /f /im Gw2.exe”, now start the game.

Still not working? Restart your PC.

Thank you for your help. Before you posted I went and removed GW2 altogether and tried to re install the game from a fresh start. Now I can get the down loader to start and it comes up and DLs about 10000kb and then dissapears . Once again I look in the processes and it shows the GW2.exe there and using cpu while the game is not actually running anywhere.
I saw another post about using an IP changer. Tried that and still the same thing. Checked my firewall and its allowing 3 different ways for GW2 to get through.

This started roughly a week ago. Haven’t been able to mess with it because of time issues with the holidays. Something has changed and I’m pretty sure it isn’t from my side.

Really?! Nobody has a freakin god kitten ed clue why I was all of the sudden playing the game and everything was feakin working ok and now it wont?!?! this is BS. I paid good hard cash for this god kitten ed game and to no defect of mine all the sudden I cant play with my friends. Help Ninjas!

Reboot PC, Right click and run as admin on the patcher. Silly suggestion and im sure you’ll already tried it, in some cases admin privs are required to run/read files i certain folders.

Have you installed the game on the same drive as your operating system? Is the game installed on a drive with the letter C: ? Hard-coded paths suck big kittehs, until recently i got rid of a windows install which used another letter for it’s drive. Nuts how third party applications rely on those letters really. I had to run a dummy usb as C: for things to work LOL.

Are there more than one user on your PC ? Im thinking maybe you’ve lost ownership of the directory. You can regain it then, there’s even a reg key for downloads which adds the option to your context menu. If youre swapping drives between PC’s this could happen. Or in environments with multiple users.

On a side note, where did you get that IP Changer? Sounds like a hoax..

Now, have you scanned your system for infections? Since you downloaded an ‘IP changer’, I’m Willing to bet you download other ‘weird’ things too. So you probably have an infection or 2.

Download and run MalwareBytes, Avast! Free Edition, and SpyBot. Let them find and clean all infections.

Then Download and run the game again, If the issue persists then you need to look at your RAM and HDD/SSD. If your file system is have issues on the HDD/SSD then you need to fix that (CHKDSK/R from Command Prompt against C:\ or wherever GW2 is installled), To test RAM download and burn the Memtest86+ ISO and let it run for a god 24-48hours to complete its testing.
