Q:
I am using a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870m GPU for my laptop.
I continue to receive the error: “Unable to initialize 3d output. please verify that you have installed directx 9 and an updated video driver.”
When I get the error I will be in the middle of playing and then the game crashes and I receive the error every time when attempting to relaunch only to never get passed the launcher.
I have tried:
-Rolling back my driver for my GPU
-Updating my driver for my GPU
-Uninstalling and Re-installing Direct X 9
-Disabling the GPU and Re-enabling it
This is the 4th time this has happened since playing the game and the only workaround for this I have found to work is completely uninstalling my GPU, rebooting, re-install the GPU, and reboot. However this is only a temporary fix from what I can tell. I need a permanent fix for this so it does not continue to happen.

I was also curious as to how can be sure this is not a GW2 related problem? I can still play GTAV fine with no problems and that game utilizes my GPU 3d feature.
Nobody beside you has ever posted a problem like that before so i hardly believe
that this is a Guildware specific Problem. The only case could be that GW2 stresses
your CPU more than GTA and for that reason you run faster into problems with
overheating.Still even then there must be more when you have to reinstall your drivers since
a normal crash doesn’t change your windows system data.

When I was playing GW2 I frequently used mumble. I found this post that contained this piece of information. So you are correct it is not GW2’s fault.
Mumbles overlay is what causes the problem apparently. Thank you for your help though.
In the end this is a pure NVidia problem and in no way related to GW2, so
you should also maybe ask in the NVidia forums if others have this problem.
Or you have some malware / virus on your PC or a defect harddrive or your RAM
has problems. Its especially strange that it happens when you play. Normally
those errors occur when you start a game.
Oh .. and you said Laptop .. maybe simply overheating ?
Yeah, i mean if you can log in ok and play for a while it’s not a fundamental issue.
More likely your gpu is crying for power put your system is being overloaded due to heat.
Well once I am playing the issue will just randomly happen, after it happens that one time I have to uninstall my GPU and reinstall it to get GW2 to launch again. It is not launching everytime and crashing. After I receive the error one time GW2 will not re-launch.
I am on a laptop, however I have two built in cooling fans. My lap top feels warm to touch on the bottom while playing but it is no by means hot enough to be overworking as suggested.
I also have 16Gb RAM so I dont think RAM is the issue.
