Upgrading from a 965BE to a 4790K - Worth it?

Hi all,
I’d like to upgrade my AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE to a Intel Haswell Refresh 4790K.
The thing is: I’ve read that even people with 4770K-CPUs have FPS-problems in WvW or world events.
My CPU bugs me mostly in GW2 and BF3/4 because these are the games I play the most.
So I wanted to ask if some people here already have a 4790K and what’s your experience with it? Is it worh upgrading? And do you still need to run graphics at minimum in WvW and world events?
Going from an AMD Phenom 2 to an i7 4790K you will see a large jump in performance I think. I saw a huge jump from FX-8350 to 4770K.

Heck yes. It’s roughly 80% faster and for a game that’s so CPU dependent due to the few CPU intensive threads it has you should notice a big kick in frame rate.

Thanks for the answers so far.
I already assumed that overall FPS would increase quite a bit with the 4790k.
My real issue is the performance in large scale world events and WvW.
My current CPU suffices for normal PvE like dungeons and open world. I can play everything on max. In WvW I have to play on minimum settings though.
Do you guys still have to lower your settings in WvW with a 4770k or a 4790k?

The 965BE is about 75% slower then the 4790K on a per core performance. So going to the 4790K should yield you atleast 3x’s the performance over that 965BE for GW2.
In multi-threaded tasks (not really GW2) you might see about 2x’s the performance if not more.
I have a 4790K and a 280x, and Im getting 175FPS+ everywhere except Zergs where I no longer drop below 25FPS. And I have not even OC’d my 4790K yet.

Brain fart on my part, thought he was getting the i5-4690K which is a 3.5GHz part. Yeah, the i7-4790K is even faster but I don’t use single threaded benchmarks because of Turbo boost. The game will use at least 2 cores worth of performance so Turbo isn’t as much of a factor. You are looking more at 2.5x faster CPU performance.

you’re never going to get good fps in wvw regardless of what cpu you have. you will see a big increase, but it’ll still be crap.

How many fps do you define as crap? As long as it runs around 30fps I’mperfectly fine with it.
The reason why I opened this topic is that it’s pointless for me to upgrade if WvW is still a slideshow on max settings so I wanted to know how the 4770k and the 4790k are performing in GW2.

You need to realize that NO amount of $ shoved into hardware upgrades is going to get a silky smooth visual when 100 players are on the screen…..just not going to happen.
However, the upgrade you are talking about will certainly improve all aspects of the game rather significantly.

I am going to beg to differ on that now :-)
4790K OC to 5.0ghz, 8GB Ram OC to 2100Mhz, 280x OC 12% above reference.
Solid 28-30FPS in WvW last night.
Solid 28FPS at Maw (easily 80+ players on the screen)
I will post screenshots when I get home, forgot to pull them out of my screenshot folder on my desktop last night.

Sadly too many people think of 60fps as silky smooth, or at least 30fps minimum thus making those numbers unimpressive.

As stated above, very few players are going to consider 30FPS “silky smooth”. That’s perfectly fine to play the game and I’m sure it looks amazing out of a huge Zerg, but it’s still going to appear a bit “choppy” under those circumstances.
My current setup (a 2 year old rig with a fairly new video board) gets me about 12-25FPS in huge Zerg situations and I can live with it.
