Q:

I have a Phenom 955 3.4ghz at the moment and it’s just not doing it.

I’m thinking of upgrading it to a Intel I5 4670K

The GPU will remain a GTX 460 right now but do you think I’ll notice a difference? I recently bought my gf a gaming laptop i7 4700mq with a GTX 765m and Guild Wars looks like a new game on it compared to mine, seriously, that laptop literally spoiled the game for me as I didn’t realise how out of date my PC was.

Any suggestions?

A:

hell yes ….bassicaly :P

Even more so if u OC the sucker.
A 460 GPu is still perfectly capable of handle GW2, its likely not being fully utilised atm as ur CPU is holding it back.

  • a 460 = ~650ti. So its fine.

Once u get that CPU in ur PC, it will be betetr than ur laptop.

The i5 4670k is a great CPU for GW2. Make sure to get a good aftermarket cooler for overclocking as well as a mid to high end motherboard.
The GTX 460 isnt too bad for GW2 but most people point out that the GTX 660ti is a good “go to” GPU for the game. It all boils down to your budget of course

Thanks mate. I just ordered an intel i5 4670K with a MSI Z87 board, I’m going to keep the GTX 460 and save the £250 to buy a GTX 770 later. Hopefully I’ll see some improvements as WvWvW is impossible at the moment with my old Phenom =\

Oh you will. But still turn down the CPU bound options under graphics settings. Since WvW is heavily CPU bound, having those extra features on takes away from your MaxiumMin FPS you can obtain in WvW. On my Rig (i5-4670K +Z87-G45) I get a solid 20-25FPS with out OC’ing the CPU at all.

Indeed set things like:

Reflections: Off or Terrain & Sky (Big FPS killer)

Shadows : Anything but Ultra. Off being the best for performance obviosly. (will give you a handfull fo FPS)

Culling Settings:
Character Limit: High-Highest (its a big FPS killer but u NEED it set this high to see people)
Texture Limit: Medium or low ( another killer, set to medium for avergae sized zergs, set to low as soon as u see FPS getting to low)

The rest fo the settings i personaly dont see THAT much of a difference, though ofcourse if one were to set them all to Lowest then you would gain the accumulative few FPS from each setting and thus gain a good amount of FPS performance. but the look of GW2 would be ruined.

Everything here, but you need to disable post processing effects (its like 3-8% on the CPU that could be going back to the WvW mess), that Character Outline affects every Model present. In a zerg is can be CPU Killer.

Shadows I run Low – I just am not a fan of shadows personally, they distract :-)
Character Limit I always run on low – Nothing more painful then adjusting settings while zerging.

A PvE preset and a WvW preset for graphical settings would be nice, but then again so would playing the game with everything cranked and getting good fps

actually a preset is a good idea. If they can bind the preset based on Map Location (WvW, PvE, sPVP, World Boss Maps) that could help curb alot of the issues with performance until a real fix is presented.
