You get a e-mail of noreply@guildwars2.com (see attachment for e-mail)

But when you click on the URL you go to the following URL:

[Redacted]

The officieel URL is: https://account.guildwars2.com/account

Watch out for this….. and don’t fill in your e-mailadres, serial key and character name!

Kind regards,
Grobbe / Rekkabnekeok

As has been said before – ArenaNet emails that are sent without you instigating them will never have live links for you to click.

Did you get a precursor or something worth a lot of gold drop just before this email?

I got a precursor dropped and within 20 mins i got the exact same email, sent ticket to anet and they told me my account details we used on some other site or game and thats how they got it, however all my names etc on gw are unique therefore could only have come from GW, but anet declined to even check my fake email even though I gave them both the correct email address this fake email came from as well as the IP it came from…

Exactly HOW do you connect getting a windfall drop to ANet being somehow involved in this scam?

Why would Anet care to investigate the source of an email that has been spammed to thousands of players (and non-players) from a source that nobody can even begin to take any action against (simply outside of any type of internet legal jurisdiction)?

This was their reply -

“Hackers steal game accounts because they have long lists of account names and passwords, this is why our system does not allow to re-use previous passwords. They know them because they stole them (via security breaches or spyware) from another games or sites where the person used the same information.”

The unique name muerte.3842 has only ever been used on GW nowhere else

The password used for GW was never used on any other game or site

How could this possibly therefore have been used on other sites or games when the combination of unique name and password have only ever been used on GW?

Also my email address associated with this account doesnt show on this forum or within the game so how did one get my email address from unique GW name??

I sent ticket to anet support with email address that this actually came from using the headers and the IP address and anet’s response was simply to fob me off and not investigate… then send me a link asking how they did? erm… they didnt help at all…

Your Display Name has nothing to do with gaining access to your Game Account. It is public information anyone can see.

I think you are confusing Display Names (muerte.3842) with Account Names. Your Display Name can be seen by anyone with access to the internet. Your Account Name should be unique, and something never used anywhere before. If you have used that email address for any other internet interactions, it could have easily been usurped. Perhaps, your email address account isn’t as secure as you might have been led to believe. /shrug

Are you suggesting that your email account and the password you used on that email account has NEVER be use elsewhere on the internet? The don’t NEED your GW2 password if they can get into your email…..they just request a change of password.

Your reply also does not make any connection with you getting a “good drop”. Your implication is that someone either has hacked Anet to the point that they KNOW when good drops happen (and thus target those accounts for hacks) or someone inside Anet is monitoring good drops and is passing the information to hackers. Both suggestions are FULL-TILT tin-foil hat conspiracy theories of Legendary proportion.

Your argument that your email address does not show in game or in the forums actually supports the theory that it was gotten from another source…..not that it was either supplied by Anet or hacked from Anet.
