Weird flickering at game startup
Not only am I getting the EXACT issue you described for the first time since launch…when I do finally get into a server I am so very laggy that my character hardly responds and the video is super-choppy. Something happened that made the game unplayable for me.
I have the same problem, although my game does not even start
My launcher just goes away and then I’m back to where I was before I started the launcher, in other words, nothing is happening
.
As I launch my game screen goes away and small, light blue bar appears across the top of the screen(anout 7-8 width). When my map art screen loads(Diessa Plateau for example) it even drops for a second reveaing my desktop and that same blue bar…
then i enter a laggy/choppy unplyable mess of a game.
Everything was perfect since launch….even played late last night. Get on this afternoon….broken. How is this possible with the game didn’t even get an update since them(if I am not mistaken)?
I solved my problem, I upgraded my video card drivers and at least for now it works fine. I’ll get back to you if this is just a temporary fix
Well i can’t update my video card drivers as i am already using the latest ATI drivers so that wouldn’t be a fix for me
You could try and run it in windowed mode. This is not optimal but until a fix is out this could be a solution. For me it seems like the game all of a sudden is not able to run in fullscreen which is strange since it had been doing that ever since I started playing it.
To run the game in windowed mode you should create a shortcut to your gw2.exe. Add -windowed to the destination of the shortcut(found through properties of the shortcut).
Tried the windowed approach….
-there is no odd flickering or screen drops during loading when launching in a window
-in a window about 50% of desktop total size the game ran like it used to(yesterday/just fine)
-if I enlarge the window the game drops off in perfmance and becomes choppy again
This is so strange since there were no updates to the game(as far as I know) in the last 24 hours and suddenly it won’t run normally in full screeen for people? bizarre.
Yo UndeadCreepshow (love the name)!
To begin, like many games; especially in the past; the flickering is caused by your monitor switching resolutions set in your game options, and Direct X kicking in. Depending on your graphics card whether it’d be on board, or not; it may have difficulties switching because the amount of memory available on it to run a game like this.
On another note, Windowed Mode is introduced for people with more powerful machines, and although may be harder on your computer; it’s quicker for alt tabbing and swapping between the game faster.
If you’re attempting to avoid the flicker effect, and switching it to windowed mode; if the computer isn’t too powerful—you may experience performance issues (lag, etcetera).
Now that information is out of the way, which graphics card did you have?
Did you download the latest driver, and restart the computer?
Do you have other monitors and/or applications running in the background?
Edit:
You posted since I asked this.
What driver version do you have, are you sure it’s the latest?

Haha yeah my name is pretty unique i have never seen it used before and i thought it was pretty awesome myself when it first came into my head, but onto the questions and statements. You said the flickering is caused by the game switching resolutions set to my game options. First of all it should have to switch resolutions because i’m running the game at the same resolution as my desktop 1920×1080. And Guild Wars 2 is the only game that the flickering happens on. If it was in more games than just this i would of course look to something graphic related. Example i play Battlefield 3 at a resolution of 1600×900 just to get a few more frames because it’s an FPS. If what you say is true then Battlefield 3 definitely should flicker because its a lower resolution than my desktop but it doesn’t. The game starts up just fine and i go on about playing as normal. And on your question yes i am sure i am using the latest version of my video drivers. i have the latest drivers released on AMD’s website which is 12.8. I don’t mess with the CAPs since that is only for multi-GPU setups.
Haha, that’s awesome you thought of that name on the fly. :P
The reason why it may flicker more is because of the frequency.
*Do you have vertical sync on?
*What’s your frame limiter and refresh rate?
If yes/not, play around with them a little bit. Don’t worry, it wont have a direct negative effect, it may help your situation.
As for the video drivers, did you have another graphics card in the computer at one point before this one? Has it been recent?

Graphics card has always been the same, i put this computer together myself. Vsync is on, Frame limiter is 60 and Refresh Rate is at 60
And no results when playing around with the settings?
Did you use the CD to install your drivers for your graphics card initially, then update it later on?
If so, I have a few steps you can try.

I should also point out that I’ve noticed the screen flickering when I turn the game on too. The flickering stops when I switch to windowed fullscreen (although, for some reason, the game always seems to say it’s not responding when I first turn it on, before it finally boots up the character selection screen). However, I’m not sure how any of you are changing your Refresh Rate to 60 in windowed fullscreen, as the game won’t allow me to do that. I can only change the refresh limit.
Nope, the cd drivers were some generic drivers so i installed the drivers straight from AMD’s website with no problems
Same, flickering start today post-patch. Beginning yesterday, games takes twice as long to load(involving various odd flickers are screen drops during launch) only to settle into an unplyable 5-8 FPS upon entering the game. Ran perfectly until yesterday…what happened arenanet?
