just like the topic says, is there a way to see why you got banned? I didn’t get an email or anything? It’s only for 72 hours though so I’m not really too worried about it, just wondering.

Did you have a potty mouth in map chat?

Keep your language filter on. Unfortunately the speech police are usually out in full force and look for any reason to report someone.

That is probably it…I do have a potty mouth sometimes lol. I wonder why they would have a profanity filter though if they aren’t gonna use it…If that is the case, if I put my filter on will that also filter out my cusswords, or only other people? I hope it filters mine out also so I don’t have to get banned again :b

Your filter only filters out other people’s profanity…..not yours.

The language filter is not meant to provide a license to curse. It is meant to limit the cursing and other banned words the filter user sees when someone breaks ToS and curses. Many players don’t have it on because they don’t know about it i.e. newbies. Due to this you will still get reported. Additionally there are probably a lot of people with it off just because they want to report people. Also the GMs pop in time to time as well.

In game cursing is a violation of ToS no matter what. Simple solution don’t curse in chat..

Why would it be an excuse anyway. The OP is the one cursing. The ones affected are the ones with it off. So people that break ToS are the ones cursing. The people with it off don’t need an excuse as they are the ones affected by the cursing. Yes my example of the people that might have it off was incorrect but the point is still the same. OP should not curse because some people have language filter off because cursing in game is still a ToS. Reading cursing is not.

Anyway I gave the guy the URL to support in my first reply. If he thinks he was suspended for no reason he should use the support system. They will mostly likely address any questions he has about in game language as well.

I do see what you’re saying, and you’re right, it’s my fault for cursing. Let’s be logical here though, when I say kitten…what happens here? Why can’t they just do that in game chat? If you don’t want somebody to shoot someone, why would you put the gun in his hand? By this I mean, why don’t they just remove cursing all together? Boom, every problem has just been solved. Kind of silly if you ask me.

Maybe because they allow different languages in-game, and the filter can not handle that? Just a guess. Still, you did agree not to curse in-game, and if that is what you were suspended for, you broke the rule. The message they give you for a suspension is found when you try to log-in, there should be a reason stated for your inability to do so.

Also, I strongly recommend to appeal this 72 hour ban. It serves as a warning and bans will get ever more harsh. The next time you get banned rightfully, it might be a permaban if this one doesn’t get removed from your account history.

From interviews and comments I’ve read, people don’t get banned for cursing. They get banned for being abusive to other players.

i.e. if you curse because you fell and died, meh…. If you call someone a kittening kitten kittener with a small kitten. Then you’re open to being banned.

I have the profanity filter off so I can properly read sentences where people swear for emphasis, not because I enjoy being sworn at. If you verbally attacked another player, chances are you were reported. I reported someone for this today. It happens. Smarten up, treat people with respect.

When you get suspended the error message when logging in wil tell you the reason. The filter is no excuse to use faul language or to offend someone. It’s like saying ’I’m allowed to ram that other car cause I know that model has airbags’

I’m an officer in a guild where we don’t allow faul language in the guildchat. If someone breaches that rule I need to give out warning or take disciplinairy actions and I need to make a report to the guildleader. The only way to do that is having the filter off.

If people chose to treat each other with respect when communicating in chat, suspensions wouldn’t happen. But people choose to not take that route, so they get time away from the game to think about how to best behave. I see no problems with this.

Except last week, I noticed my filter was off, and I’d never shut it off. A couple other people mentioned that possibly the patch had affected it, because they noticed the same thing. I generally leave chat filters on because I think they’re funny.

Nobody put a gun in your hand because you decided to curse. You loaded and fired it yourself. Just because I’m wearing a bullet proof vest doesn’t give you the right to shoot at me.

It isn’t the fault of Anet that you didn’t read the ToS and Code of Conduct. However by logging in and playing you had to click the agree to terms button therefore you agreed not to use adult language in game, language filter or not.

Looks like you got a temp ban so just ride it out and consider it a lesson learned. Don’t curse in chat, you will have no more problems with being banned for cursing. Seems pretty simple to me.

You should probably submit a support ticket… if it’s meant to notify you why you were banned and hasn’t, either there’s an issue with that function, or perhaps you were banned in error to begin with.

You’re completely missing the point, if they don’t want it then they can get rid of it themselves. Simple as that, but I do agree with what someone else said I don’t think it’s the cussing as much as it is the abusing other players, which is completely understandable. I for one don’t get offended when people cuss, or criticize me to the point of feeling the need to taddle. I grew out of that when I was about 4 years old lol. I guess I’m just used to the internet and online games. I know how people roll so it’s nothing new or anything to get kitten about. If it was over a chat issue I don’t see why they wouldn’t just perma mute me from map chat. I’ll give them credit for one thing, even though they are losing players they still aren’t scared to ban the few that they have left. I don’t mean that sarcastically either, it’s good they aren’t scared to stand up for what they feel is right even if they have to ban every last player. Thanks for the replies guys! I’ll just wait it out.

Would you walk in a crowded mall and start yelling obscenities? That’s exactly what your doing in map chat. Feeling the need to justify the right to do that makes me wonder what mommy and daddy were doing when you were growing up. No wonder Honey Boo Boo and Jersey Shore is so popular.

To be specific – it filters the incoming text, not outgoing. Turning on your filter, then cursing, will not stop others who have their filter off from seeing the language you used.

While it is not public (therefore right of free speech doesn’t apply) the game is still a “place” even if not a physical one, in a legal sense, IIRC.

Bans and suspensions are supposed to ID why they were given when you try to log in, as I recall.

As far as why you can turn the filter off :

Filters can mess up. They can make mistakes (Heck, on the forums it used to turn Kessex Hills into KesKitten Hills.) That is a large part of why it can be turned off.

Just keep it clean in /map, /team, and /say.

If you don’t know all the people well to know you will be okay, then apply it to /party, /whisper, and /guild as needed.
