Q:

Computer spec:
i5 4690k
amd 6970 video card
8gb memory
Window 8.1 (Window 10 ATM)

This is a new computer that i just built, everything was good. Most of my setting are set to high. In LA i get around 40+ fps, nothing less. My fps has always stay above 40 to 100+ unless big zerg fight (wvw) or big events, then i’ll get 20ish… but on May 3rd when i turn on my computer and play GW2, my fps has massively decrease. In LA now the most i can get is around 30 fps if i’m lucky. In wvw if there’s like 5 or so people i’ll get no more then 30 fps. (BTW this is with character model limit and character model quality on lowest, before this happen i’ll get 60+ fps and that’s with character model limit and character model quality on high) it seems to me that my fps has been cut in half… I don’t remember doing anything that’ll cause this change. why all the sudden the fps drop? I have tried a couple of things: reinstall GW2, a complete system restart (formatted hard drive and reinstall window), have try this https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/PC-FPS-and-Performance-based-issues
Also i have try to play my account on my brother’s laptop and everything is good, so something is up with my computer. I’m totally confuse on why my fps has suddenly drop. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Do the problems happen in W10 or W8.1? In that case, which build do you have?

Also provide screenshots of cpu-z, gpu-z and game settings.

Your GPU is linked at x4 version 1.1, you need to make sure the GPU is in the closest PCIE slot to the CPU and that its linked at either x8 or x16 version 2 or version 3 (dont remember what spec the 6970 is)

but get that fixed and your FPS will be 80+

well GPU-Z shows the GPU linked at x4, if it is closest to the CPU then pull the card, dust off the slot and reinstall it.

but that is the cause of your FPS issues.

What motherboard do you have? Do you use any other PCIe slots?

That’s fine it’s suppose to be a x16. There’s a couple of mATX motherboards whose one PCIe slot looks x16 but is actually x4.

Did you update your video driver recently? Other than inspecting the pins in the slot closely, inspect and or clean the edge contacts on the video card and making sure it’s fully inserted the entire length of the slot, I have nothing.

Sorry.

And this is while the game is playing? Click on the little ? next to the x4 2.0, it will pop up a little Dx program in a window. What does it say when that little windowed program is running?

Even when the game is playing it says the same thing. Click on the ? and the Dx program runs and it still say the same thing. Maybe it’s my card?

Now i’m almost certain it’s my card…. but what is wrong with my card that is causing this?

Make sure the gpu is at the closest pcie to the cpu. And have you tried different drivers?

Also try going to control panel > power options> change advanced settings> PCI Express > Link State Power Management. turn the setting to: Off.
If not, you should look into the bios and set the pcie speeds manually. It’s called “NB PCIE Configuration” and it’s inside one of the submenus of Advanced.

If nothing of this solves the 6970 pcie speed, then there a problem with the gpu, it could be hadware damage in one of the pcie pins.

I am using the pcie slot closet to the cpu. Have not try a different driver but i dont’ think that is it… The power option is set to “off”… have gone to the bios and change it to Gen 3 and Gen 2… and still same thing…

So what we know so far is this:
-switching to the pcie slot x8 and it still shows "PCI-E 2.0×16 @ x4 2.0
-try my old R5670 and it’s running at x16

So the conclusion I’ve came up with is the card is damage in some way…. Guess it’s time for a new one

So I was able to get the card to run at x16 again. I decided to stress test the card by downloading this http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
Stress it for about 10 mins, shutdown and went to work. When i came back, turn it on and check and it’s back to x16 http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/15/05/08/2sy.png
Idk what it did but it work so if anybody is having the same issue try that. Thanks for all the reply
